well, now I feel really old......

I often wonder how many of today's bands will still be around in 40 years - after watching Top of the Pops from the 1980s and 1990s and realised that I couldn't remember or had never heard of many of them !
So many one hit wonders!

Paul McCartney is 80 next Saturday 18th June. My best friend at school in the 60s was obsessed with him and I think I know more about Paul's details than I know about myself and I can still remember them all!

I first saw the Stones in Wigan Ritz cinema/theatre and have seen the 6 times since then. We are off to see them again in London on July 3rd. It's a shame Charlie won't be there.

I was also a big Bowie fan, friends were dying their hair s multitude of colours but I was reluctant to mess with my waist length blonde hair. My solution was to raid my mum’s food cupboard and use food colouring to add muti coloured streaks

I was besotted with Donovan and still like him. After 50 years l finally got to see him and he was brilliant, he sat on the stage cross legged playing his guitar but l noticed when he finally got up he stumbled a fraction…..l am almost certain l could no longer sit cross legged even for a few minutes never mind half an hour!

I went to see David Bowie in our local music hall when he was on the Ziggy tour. It was 1973 and I was 15.

I was already a massive fan and we had seats on the second row - bliss.

I had long brown hair and like Nannina I used to try to put streaks in using food colouring and ink. I was never successful as my hair was too dark.

I also saw Queen at the same venue around about the same time. They were supporting Mott the Hoople and had just released Seven Seas of Rye. Freddie had his black and white jump suit on. Everyone said they were better than the main act.

I saw The Stones at Birmingham Town Hall in 1964 too. Pity I was stuck behind a huge pillar and the view wasn't very good but they were awful, sounded dreadful, on the other hand The Barron Knights were really good!

I was, and still am to a certain extent, obsessed with The Beatles, especially George Harrison. I remember floating home one evening after one of the times I saw them live. George had come to a window to speak to a group of us. I was in heaven. My family still refer to him as 'your George'. I wish!

I'm surprised that some of you say The Stones sounded awful in the '60s. Every concert I went to the only sound I heard was screaming, hysterical girls!

So many musical memories. Reading festival in the 70s I went again with OH and a friend 3/4 years ago and loved the line up!

We loved it, there were so many more I couldn’t recall just now but not sure I’d brave it again.

I was a huge fan of The Stones. The first time I saw them live, in a local dance hall when they were just starting to get famous, it cost me a weeks pocket money to buy the ticket (10 shillings). The last time I saw them at the O2, it cost me a weeks pension !!!!!!

DH has been a lifelong Bob Dylan fan, I surprised him with tickets at Hyde Park, Neil Young was also on so something for us both! This was in 2019 for his 70th. It was quite hard standing for so long, but what an experience!!!

That said just heard the new George Ezra album which is a sheer delight - not all new stuff is crap !

It's OK, but not groundbreaking. I'd say that George Ezra, sweet as he is, comes under what we used to call - rather disparagingly - Middle of The Road. (See also, Ed Sheehan)

Paul McCartney 80!!! "80 is what your grandfather should be" -I thought, until I remembered that I am now 70 and most of my friends are 70 / 80+. When I was young, I went to watch "Help" at the local cinema. I went in at 1.00pm and came out at 9.00pm having seen it 3 times through. Father had a fit, but seeing Paul singing "Another Girl" x 3, made it worth it.

I was outraged when my parents wouldn't let me go to see The Stones in Hyde Park in 1969, mind you I was only 11 . I was very fortunate to see Bowie on his farewell to Ziggy Stardust tour when he deliberately chose small venues, what a star he was.

Hazel93 I also saw the Beachboys when I was 15, with some schoolfriends at the Finsbury Park Astoria. Must have been about 1966. It was ruined by all the screaming (including my friends!). I saw The Beatles in 1963 at the Granada Walthamstow with my aunt. Gerry & The Pacemakers were in the line-up too and Louise Cordet. Same again with the screaming. Never understood it to be honest. They stopped playing for a minute and John said "if you keep screaming you can't hear us singing". Not seen many bands live, but loved seeing Eagles in 2001 at the Birmingham NIA. They were fabulous. Seen Dennis Locorriere (the singer with Dr Hook) a couple of times. I still love Dr Hook.

I saw the Beatles in Birmingham in the 1960s. I think Dusty Springfield was a support act. There were men walking up and down the aisles with batons to stop us rioting. It was mega ?

I saw the Rolling Stones in Blackpool in 1964. I also regularly saw the Beatles, Cilla Black, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Hollies, Herman’s Hermits. on the Cavern. Those were the days. I think the 60s was the best decade for music.

My claim to fame is that I met my husband in the Cavern Club. At the time it was a jazz club, hosting bands like Acker Bilk and Johnny Dankworth.
By the time the Beatles came along I was married, with a baby, so I never got to see them ☹️

I was an early Beatles fan. Absolutely loved their early stuff! Hated it when they, as I put it, got weird. I was an early to middle period Motown girl, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, liked the Animals, Chad and Jeremy, classic Beach Boys (no later stuff), I liked danceable music for the most part and just dropped the Beatles like a hot rock when the LSD music came out. Dave Clark Five was good, too. Never cared for the Stones. First heard Bob Dylan at college and laughed my head off. Thought there was something wrong with the record. I'm a rad trad.

50 years!!!!
One of the boys in our class was the 1st to buy the Ziggy Stardust album. He lived close to our school so 6 of us snuck out and spent the afternoon listening to it. Funny, 2 school friends and I were just talking about that when we met for a dinner at the weekend.

Still love Ziggy Stardust, can it really be SO old?!
