Something I have always wanted.

I love viewing outdoor sculpture exhibitions and have often wanted a sculpture of my own but they are very silly prices we can’t afford.

On Saturday we visited a NT House and Gardens which had a fabulous display of outdoor sculptures in a variety of mediums such as metal, wood, stone etc. I was particularly taken with a stainless steel heron. DH saw me looking at this exhibit and just said ‘shall we buy it’ ?. I didn’t need much persuading and I spoke to the sculptor today and when the Exhibition ends it will be delivered to us.

The heron will take pride of place in our small walled back garden where I can see him everyday from my office.

He’s definitely male and I want to name him. I’ve looked up the Latin name for heron and don’t like that. Any suggestions for our new acquisition?

I’m so pleased Shysal that you have treated yourself. If we had a bigger garden I would buy more.

Happy Birthday in advance. ?

Heronimo

I love the sound of your heron. I have an ibis but some here call them bin chickens. I like them though and he is made from tin and copper and has sat next to my little pool for around 10 or so years. He weathers well.

Congratulations on your purchase, Kate. I have a birthday coming up this week so have ordered an owl on a fork as a treat for myself! Thanks for the link.

NanKate Mon 13-Jun-22 10:32:23

The owl on the fork is so cute Fanny. ?

NanKate Mon 13-Jun-22 10:30:30

The dragonfly on the rock is so good Dragonfly ?

NanKate Mon 13-Jun-22 10:28:40

Thanks for all the great name suggestions, I like so many of them. I’ll wait till his arrival and then decide.

When he is in-situ we will christen him whilst sipping a glass of some fizzy drink ?

How about calling him Locheil?
Cameron of Locheil is the hero in the book Flight of the Heron, or perhaps you could use his forename, Ewan.

I really like the owl on the fork.
Very inspired! A great way to mount a bird.

DD bought DH a metal heron for his birthday a couple of weeks ago. It’s so lovely and positioned so we can see it from our seats on the conservatory.
DGD has named her Hermione,

How lovely NanKate. Hero would be good. I love the owls. ?

Jaxjacky Mon 13-Jun-22 07:57:02

Well done NanKate you’ll get hours of pleasure from your purchase.

Lucky you Kate!

We consider herons lucky - well that's what I told DD2 when she was worried about seeing one magpie on the way to sitting a GCSE. I told her that there was an old wife's tale that herons undid any bad luck. Luckily the herons we usually saw on our journey were on the river bank as normal.

Our herons were, imaginatively, name Henry and Henrietta.

Thanks folks for all your positive comments. I have attached the website of the sculptor where you can view some of his work. My heron cost £179 including delivery which seems reasonable to me. Take a look.

Hero ?

BoadiceaJones Mon 13-Jun-22 06:36:25

Gorgeous. He isn't a Heron...since he's a boy, how about Hison?

Greenfinch Mon 13-Jun-22 06:28:36

What a lovely acquisition NanKate. I ,too, was thinking along the classical lines:
Herod(adapted from the Greek),
Homer
Hercules. In flight the heron appears as a very strong bird.
Enjoy!

H1954 Mon 13-Jun-22 05:38:04

He sounds lovely Nankate! Have you considered using the sculptors name in some format?

Either way, I hope he gives you both many hours of pleasure.

NotSpaghetti Mon 13-Jun-22 05:33:49

Congratulations NanKate, how lovely.

Georgesgran Mon 13-Jun-22 05:32:27

Duty? Situ - why do I write one word and it comes out as another!

Georgesgran Mon 13-Jun-22 05:31:19

Do you want a ‘pet name’ for him - Harry, Herbert, Horace or classical - Hector, Hercules. Perhaps named after the NT property - Chatsworth, Cragside, or something descriptive like The Fish Thief?
Hope you’ll post a picture when he’s in duty.

MissAdventure Sun 12-Jun-22 23:24:36

Rodrigues.
There is one type of heron with that name, I think.

MissAdventure Sun 12-Jun-22 23:20:40

Ooh yes! smile

Spinnaker Sun 12-Jun-22 23:14:33

There is a heron called Goliath - good strong one word name ?
