They might have wondered if you were ill?
Don't always assume ulterior motives!
Simple enough to say
"I was on the phone/loo/in the shower/ loft or cooking or whatever. "

Yup! My next door neighbour knocks on my door and if I don't answer it, she looks through the window. If I'm quick enough to nip into the back garden, she goes back home, goes into her back garden and collars me over the fence to tell me that she's just knocked on my door and I didn't answer! I'm considering an underground bunker.

Have you ever had the experience of someone knocking without prior arrangement on your door and you are unable (as contrasted with unwilling) to answer promptly at that time, then on a later occasion being told, indignantly, "I knew you were in but you did not answer the door" as if, notwithstanding you living in a private residence you are expected to provide a reception desk facility continuously during business hours, as might reasonably be expected of a business?
