Today is National Apple Turnover day…..yes really!
There seems to be a National Day for everything, it’s just marketing.
I think we should scrap all these ridiculous days and have fewer more meaningful ones.

I must have missed it. We were in SA last week. Hadn’t heard of any but there was a day when everyone had headlights on and apparently it was for the firefighters which is fine by me, at least that was a worthwhile cause.

We don't have any of those days. Must be a British thing.

nanna8 Lipstick day was on TV in Australia last week or maybe the week before.

Grandma70s Thu 21-Jul-22 06:54:17

I was thinking they must be American because I haven’t heard of most of them.

I have these days categorised in my head under 'foolish but fun'. Who cares? Regard or disregard at will. If they bring a smile then that's a bonus methinks.

Spice101 Thu 21-Jul-22 04:11:00

One day last week was apparently International Lipstick Day recently. Who'd have thought that was a thing?

Saint George wasn’t even English or a real person was he? Why celebrate him? Might as well have Basil Brush Day.

Sago Wed 20-Jul-22 21:37:13

sazzl I agree

I think England should have St George's Day as a national holiday

Blossoming - I’ve just seen it’s World Chocolate Day today on another thread. I might just have to support WCD in some small way.

nipsmum Thu 07-Jul-22 13:23:07

Sorry. I just ignore all days like this. I hate advertising.

Blossoming Wed 06-Jul-22 19:17:58

Tomorrow is World Chocolate Day, I shal be paying my respects.

exactly.
i think happycatholicwife is based across the pond, where attitudes to church-going are v different.
we seem to be much more wary and cynical here.

I'm all for a silly day of recognition. I have no idea who decides these things and makes them public, but I could go for an apple turnover!

I also approve of 'days of recognition' that aren't necessarily holidays, but can bring awareness to a cause or disease. A thing that has caught on here the last few years is "movember", when men grow mustaches in support and awareness of men's health, and a reminder to have prostate checks.

The erosion of the church and religion could warrant another thread. Society has changed indeed over the last 50 years, but many don't blindly follow the doctrines of formal religion, especially when so many things have come to light about the mistreatment of women and children in the past.

GrammyGrammy, well done you for saying that. I believe the same. I think all the anomalous behavior in our society is down to two things: breakdown of the church going community and the family.

Yeah right - because everybody used to be Christian in this nation. Really?

I help run a toddler group and try to plan a topical craft each week. I searched online last week for suggestions for a special day and there were at least 8 for that day alone, all pathetic rubbish. That evening I discovered it had been Wrong Trousers Day- but that was not in the list!
I was so disappointed as we could have had a lot of fun with that.

happycatholicwife1 Wed 06-Jul-22 17:40:13

Yes, Halloween is over the top. Needs taking down a notch. Maybe there shouldn't be a party for it in every phase of a person's life (home, school, neighborhood, mall, church basement.

Milest0ne Wed 06-Jul-22 17:25:26

I think we should send back the silly American days which turn into weeks such as Halloween ( we used to have snatch apple day) I worked in a gift shop and we found no one was interested in Valentines day. Viva Bonfire night.

"Pagan godless nonsense"? As a Pagan, I would like to point out that we have many gods, and goddesses too. And we don't have any connection with national days - though, based on the Pagans I have known, National Apple Turnover Day would be quite popular in the Pagan community. We're very fond of the "cakes and ale" side of our faith.

Can't stand these silly national days like apple turnover day when the country is in recession and we have a mental health timebomb among children. Let's keep it serious so we get support for the charities like Autism week or Depression week. Apple Turnover day!!!! I mean seriously!!!! How absurd and how VERY annoying!

lixy Wed 06-Jul-22 13:56:20

The silly made-up national days make me smile, so I think they are worth knowing about. I too enjoyed National Cream Tea day recently and there are 'Share a smile' days which are great for everyone.
I think most just fun though the charity/illness ones are good for raising awareness.

GrammyGrammy Wed 06-Jul-22 13:43:47

Well since we have chosen to become a godless nation we no longer want to follow the Christian holy days and church calendar. So we have to fill the airways with distracting pagan godless nonsense in its place. If we want to return to a better way then we are (for now) free to do so.

Can’t beat Melbourne Cup Day though, first Tuesday in November. Very big. A public holiday where I live of course. I was trying to find out when it started and it was 1861 and it became a public holiday in 1873. Old for Australia but nothing compared with Bonfire Night in the UK.

Perhaps we should have a no more national days day or even celebrate all the national days on one day- take your pick what to celebrate
