Poor George made to sit and swelter at Wimbledon on the hottest day of the year, in a jacket and tie! He should be in the garden, in the shade, playing in the paddling pool with other kids.

The Lawn Tennis Assoc or whatever, insist on these antiquated rules. Even the players, especially the women, would prefer not to have to wear white shorts or pants/skimpy white skirts. I don’t enjoy watching tennis and hearing all the ludicrous screams and shrieks, so if they all get a kick out of these nonsensical rules, that’s ok by me. W and K have the chance to move the RF into the present but they continue to look like stuffed shirts. The days of a republic are in sight I hope. Btw, all of W and Ks children look like Kate’s dad, imo, which is at least, refreshing.

Fast forward to the republic for me 25 Avalon…. Can’t come soon enough!

He was in the shade and there is air conditioning of some sort - he didn't exactly look hot and sweaty. Another moan about literally nothing - just another excuse to have a go at the royals. The Royal Box has a dress code - remember the furore when William and George wore football shirts to a football match? They literally cannot win with some people!

annboleyn Tue 12-Jul-22 15:05:46

Why this poor boy is dragged around I don't understand. He had to sit through hours and hours of Jubilee celebrations and then to sit sweltering through tennis whilst mum was cool in a short sleeved dress. These people need to come into the 21st century. He loves his football so leave him with that, he should be at home playing whatever he likes to do

Widnesbabcia Tue 12-Jul-22 14:50:11

I agree he should of been wearing a nice short sleeved shirt... but as for any lessons he has wouldn't we all get the best for our children/grandchildren if we could afford it

Anniebach Tue 12-Jul-22 14:33:26

They must have been near microphones

Joseanne Tue 12-Jul-22 14:15:45

There's a video in the papers today showing George complaining to his dad that he was hot and his father replies, "Don't worry, you'll be alright". Then his mum says something about he won't be in direct sunlight like other spectators.
So the child was uncomfortable.

Paperbackwriter Tue 12-Jul-22 14:12:58

He was wearing the dress code that is obligatory in the royal box, regardless of who you are. In fact he was lucky to be there at all. Children are generally not allowed in there at all. The Duchess of Kent tried to take a young protege of hers in there years ago and wasn't allowed to. She never went to Wimbledon again after that.

He didnt look uncomfortable to me. No red face or shiny brow on my TV. Perhaps there was a cool air system circulating in the box. And perhaps he enjoys tennis with or without lessons from Roger. If I could afford them I would like GC to have lessons in all subjects from specialists at an early, why not?. Lovely to see a child actually sitting without a computer screen in front.

StoneofDestiny Tue 12-Jul-22 14:11:35

Parents decision - the willingly accept every privilege going even if their kids are bored out of their mind and melting.

George, by the way, is anything but 'poor', born into unimaginable and unearned wealth.

Rosina Tue 12-Jul-22 13:53:44

Poor child - he must have felt so hot in tailoring, a jacket and tie. So unecessary. When my OH worked in the city years ago the ruling was that suit jackets stayed on until the temperature reached the high nineties. (Female staff could wear sleeveless items) I did suggest that the men should all slump to the floor as one with heatstroke - what stupid rules there are about dress.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 12-Jul-22 13:51:50

Perhaps he asked to go and the dress code was explained to him and he still wanted to go. We just don’t know.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 12-Jul-22 13:48:02

All three if the children play tennis and I’ve read that the royal box is air conditioned, though how that works when it’s open to the outside I don’t know.
I think George is in training for his role as heir, he won’t have a normal childhood for a lot of the time. It’s what’s he’s born into.

Nannina Tue 12-Jul-22 13:46:20

There are a lot of parents who pay for private tuition in areas from sport to academia, some for very young children. They can obviously afford Federar but it won’t do his career any harm either-he might even be doing it for free! As for his attire- it’s not something I’d inflict on any child but they are training a future royal and we all know that institution is all about outward show

Shazmo24 Tue 12-Jul-22 13:28:42

The Royal Box has the advantage of air con where they sit...hence why no one looks hot & sweaty

katy1950 Tue 12-Jul-22 13:11:31

Poor boy he looked so hot and uncomfortable there was no need for him to be there

Lizzie44 Tue 12-Jul-22 13:06:54

The bigger question is why anyone in the Royal Box should have to wear a jacket & tie on a sweltering hot day. Wimbledon needs to move with the times and relax its dress code.

Theoddbird Tue 12-Jul-22 13:05:25

He looked as if he was enjoying it. He was asking his mother a lot of questions. He obviously loved holding the cup. I wonder how you lot would feel if your every move was criticised. Presume you were all perfect parents....

bevisp1 Tue 12-Jul-22 12:51:01

Personally I agree with you, but he wasn’t the only one suffering. Both of him and William alike had jackets, surely they could have slipped them off whilst sitting there. Hope they had water with them? BUT, only a few months ago George & William were at the football match in football shirts, and so many criticized this & said being royalty should have at least been dressed smarter, ie shirt, tie & jacket! They can’t win either way. Maybe for the extreme hot weather there should have at least been a canvas canopy put up for the royal box, maybe that could happen for the future.

Juicylucy Tue 12-Jul-22 12:44:23

Royal box or no royal box, he should have been wearing what kids wear, not made to look like a mini William. Shorts and polo shirt would have looked lovely and been cooler.

Larsonsmum Tue 12-Jul-22 12:36:53

The Royal Box Dress Code rules are down to the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. They insist on suits for males.

sharonarnott Tue 12-Jul-22 12:31:30

I have read before that George loves tennis so I wasn't surprised to see him there. I too thought the jacket, shirt and tie was a bit much but apparently that is the dress code for the royal box

Grannynannywanny Tue 12-Jul-22 12:30:49

I feel sorry for Prince George and the weight of expectations on the lad’s shoulders

Like many posters on this thread I was concerned about the weight of his formal and unsuitable clothing on his shoulders in that sweltering heat. Regardless of the royal box clothing etiquette that was inappropriate for a young child to endure.

Yes, as some have said, maybe it was his choice to dress formally. But I think an informed adult should have stepped in and helped him choose something more comfortable to wear. His mother knew better than to wear a blazer on top of her lightweight dress. I can’t imagine any right thinking person accusing them of breaking protocol if Prince George was dressed in summer clothing.

carolmary Tue 12-Jul-22 12:30:37

There is a strict dress code for Royal Box so I suppose even the Royal Family have to adhere to it. Even Lewis Hamilton was refused entry for being inappropriately dressed. Stuffy it's true, but isn't that part of the reason everyone loves Wimbledon?

Jaxie Tue 12-Jul-22 12:18:25

I feel sorry for Prince George and the weight of expectations on the lad’s shoulders. I worry he looks a bit like Edward V111!
