Rather than swivel the mattress, it struck me that I could just lie the other way up some weeks.
I have a single bed and turn the mattress often.
Excellent organisation karmalady!

Do you still do it, if so how often and do you find it more difficult
(48 Posts)I am talking about turning the mattress! When I was growing up my mother would turn the mattresses once a month and after I got married I did the same, then it reduced to every couple of months and now it is probably twice a year! Turned the mattress today and I found it really difficult, in fact I almost gave up. It got me thinking, is it necessary to turn mattresses these days and do any other GNs do it?
You mean the numbers blinko? yes I dithered before I did them in permanent black pen on a pristine mattress, it was worth it, especially now when I only have enough strength to do it once without mistakes
karmalady
mine is hypnos and very heavy, discontinued now but pricey even then and worth looking after. We had two new single beds next to each other, just 3 months before my husband died. I kept the two beds since then and still next to each other
That second bed is very useful to enable mattress turning or flipping. I am supposed to do this every quarter and so far so good, 5 years on and I am still managing it. Three things made it easier for me, I put a big number 1-4 on each end of each mattress, so I know which end/side is next under my head, singles are obviously easier and the spare bed stops the mattress bending over the bed while shifting it
I cannot see me ever having to buy another mattress, the one I sleep on is even and in very nice condition and in five years I shall swap that one with the second bed mattress. I intend to keep turning/flipping, good weight training
I am in awe! That’s what I call organised!
I have a new mattress, it’s supposed to be rotated regularly but I won’t be doing that for a while.
Very comfortable bed now!
Our DD lives with us so we are able to turn the mattress. We do it about every three months, it is supposed to be done more often. It is very heavy.
I turn mine every month, and bottom to top every now and again with help from DH. Probably not necessary, but it reassures me to know I can still do it!
We’re due a new one soon so perhaps I should do a bit of future proofing and look out for a “no turn”.

DH and I turn ours every month. Our mattress is now 17 years old, as is the bed. It still seems clean and firm, DH is about 5 stone heavier than me, so I think his side would be saggier if it wasn’t turned.
It’s very heavy though, I don’t think we will manage to keep doing it as we get older.
Calendargirl - yes ours too is around that age, was very expensive to buy and will be expensive if replaced by similar quality and I've tried to keep it in the best condition possible although I'm now struggling with the turning.I hate to see beds with sunken areas and would hate even more to have to sleep in one so hopefully it'll last us a few years longer. If we do need to replace it I'll need to go for either " no turn" or something much lighter. Two mattresses seems like a good alternative though, worth considering.
We have a king size bed with two single mattresses on it. These are 'no-turn' but we do rotate them and we swap them too, OH is heavier and taller so that evens out the wear, we hope.

I have a reminder iny phone to turn them every 8 weeks. However, as ours is a German bed we have two single mattresses which are easier to manoeuvre. Ours are latex and the covers can go in the washing machine (which I shall do soon as they dry quickly in this heat.)
Chestnut You miss the point. Yes, chemicals are everywhere but most of them are inert and do not damage humans. The chemicals use in an insectcide are developed to be toxic to living organisms and what is damaging to insects can be damaging to humans.
I would also point out that if you had bedbugs, you would need to employ specialist contractors to ensure they are completely eradicated and they would be responsible for removing the mattress and destroying it
I haven't got the strength to turn a mattress and am in need of a new one. If I find a 'no turn' version then it sounds like the very thing.
Before I had this big heavy mattress I have now, I had to single ones zipped together. It wasn’t uncomfortable and a lot easier to turn or flip. Used to put one fitted king sized sheet over the both of them.
Our has summer and winter sides. I forget which we are on, as it has not been turned for ages. I can't do it, even if DH helps.
I know it would benefit from being turned and rotated, but it is just too heavy. It takes me all my time just to tuck the fitted sheet round the corners.
I decided not to have our new suite Scotchguarded because of the chemicals but that could have been a mistake!
Chemicals are everywhere, in all the furniture and in everything man-made. I saw an article about 'avoiding chemicals for your baby' and it was mind-blowing. You would literally have to put them in a glass box to avoid all the chemicals in toys, furniture, cars, everything. They are swallowing micro-plastics every time they have a drink from a plastic bottle or have their food warmed in the microwave. It's not something I can even bring myself to think about.

No, I would worry about all those noxious chemicals being warmed up and being breathed into my lungs. Farmore dangerous than any insects
Apart from anything else, I have never heard of anyone having an infestation of insects in their mattress. If you have bed bugs you burn the mattress.
My opinion too; the thought of breathing I those chemicals every night is off putting.
Burn the mattress? We can't even rotate these heavy mattresses so how on earth would we manage to burn them? Maybe setting the house on fire is the only way ?

Ours is a rotate mattress. The problem is that the room isn’t very large, so it’s still a kerfuffle trying to rotate the bloomin’ thing, so gets done only occasionally.
My friend asked me how often I sprayed the mattress with insecticide. She does hers about every 3 months, she said.
My answer was 'never'
Does anyone on here do that?
Once a year if I remember.
When I had a lighter mattress it was possible to flip or turn every fortnight but the new memory cannot be flipped so I just turn.
Our mattress is so flipping heavy that even if DH is having a good day (his back and shoulders give him hell, most days) there is no way we can or should attempt to turn our mattress.
It isn't made to be turned in the old fashioned manner, but should perhaps be turned head to tail now and again.
So never is the answer to your question.
