You should keep curtains closed in this heat to keep rooms cool. Put fans on with bowl of ice in front. I live in a nartowboat and none of my portholes open. I keep bow and stern doors open.. I draw curtain across though. Boat is quite cool at the moment....

Sleeping with the windows open
(132 Posts)It’s possibly the hottest night of the year so far. I’ve just been up to pull the bedroom curtains, and noticed that not one of the ten or so houses I can see has their windows open, not even the small ones. I can’t imagine how hot it must be in their bedrooms.
I have at least one bedroom window open all year, and tonight all the upstairs windows are all flung wide, and will stay that way. Please tell me I’m not the only one?
Can I also say, Ive lived in Spain for 33 years, and these are the normal temps for June July August, but workers have to work, services still available, nothing is closed because of the heat! Tourists wouldn't be happy if they arrived to no staff in the hotels, or bars because "its too hot"! Im amazed UK cant get through a few days of higher heat than normal
We left all the widnows open but unfortunately I have been badly bitten by something and have a massive itchy swelling
I live in Spain- the temps yesterday were 43 degrees Celsius- but no, we don't keep windows open, there are too many mozzies, and the local cats are looking for a cool place, Ive woken up in the night a few times to find a cat in the hallway ! So we fitted mozzie nets, on the bedrooms, so at least at night I can leave a little window open and I can sleep! And cats cant get in !! Fans on too !
I am still in my conservatory, although it is cool at night thankfully!
Couldn’t stand the house …..35+ in every room. So moved into garden and slept on a lounger!
If the temperature is over 25 outside (as it was last night ), this is usually hotter than inside and wouldn't you let warm air in by opening the window's
Using a fan will lower the temperature indoors , but if you open the window you let the cool air out and hot in.
I would like the windows, but I’m so terrified of spiders and I’ve had some big ones here, but I end up leaving them shut. Anyway I’ve got an insect spray I’ve been using around the doorways and windows, so I have been leaving them open when it’s dark, because it’s too hot not to.
It was still really warm outside last night so my windows remained closed. My curtains and Venetian blinds have been closed all the time. I had a cold bath late last night and slept downstairs. For once I’m glad to be surrounded by trees as my house stays relatively cool.
I have my upstairs windows open but my blackouts curtains shut to block out the sun and I’ve got my Mecca fan blowing keeping me cool at day and night as it’s quiet lol
Further to my last post, I haven’t got a clue whether it’s safe or not, but it sounds like it is. I covered all my windows and the glass door in the kitchen with cardboard as it was 29° in there at 2 am. It was 27° when I got up and it’s now 28° ?? but definitely feels a bit cooler. I have a lean to across the back of the house which traps the heat and the garden is south facing.
I’ve seen loads of posts about putting tinfoil up at the window saying it works. It was in an ideal home article as well as other places.
I have a fly/ mosquito/ (wishful thinking spider) blind, it is fitted so you don’t see it, to pull it down when needed. As my windows open inwards it is fitted between the outside window frame and the roll down blinds.

It is crazy to have the windows open when outside is hotter! Your neighbours have the right idea.
In fact, from after midnight - when I posted - until about 6 or 7am, outside was not hotter than inside.
I would normally have mine open all day with blinds closed but reading some of the comments/advice on here this morning I will try a different tactic today.
I got up and had a cold shower at about 3am this morning, it was unbearably hot last night but that did help me get back to sleep.
It was so hot outside i closed my bedroom windows to stop the moths and mozzies and opened them wide at 5.30 when I woke up. had fans on all night. This hot weather should break soon.
The advice was to keep all your windows and curtains/blinds closed during the day. In late evening when it’s a bit cooler open the windows. Of course when it’s dark that means insects will start flying in, so you should not have the lights on and just have the windows open to cool it down. Apparently if you have foil up against the windows it could crack them in the heat.
Always have at least one bedroom window open, although we live along a busy road with traffic all night. Errm, not last night, the road was closed for resurfacing, so even noisier outside. Slept in lounge, a lot cooler downstairs than up. Curtains all closed.
It all depends on how the indoors temperature of your house compares with outside air temperature. Our home is very well insulated, so by keeping all doors and windows closed during the hotter parts of the day, we managed to keep the indoor temp. down to a max of 25, whereas it peaked at 33 in the shade outside. Once the temp had dropped in the wee small hours , we opened everything up to allow the then 21 degree air back into the house. We closed down again at around 9 a.m. , once the thermometer had started to climb outside, and as I speak, at 11.55 a.m., it's 24 degrees here in the house, and already 32 outside. Roll on tomorrow, when cooler air is forecast to arrive.
Of course I pay for it in winter but walking around downstairs you’d never know there was a heatwave! Equally, the lounge (front, south-facing) curtains have been closed for over a week, which makes a huge difference. Upstairs I sleep at the front so do the same as other contributors with experience of living abroad, ie curtains & windows open late at night until about 08:30 then firmly shut. I do, however, use a small fan when I go to bed.
Windows open at night all year round
At the moment windows on south side shut and curtains drawn all day.
North facing windows open and curtains drawn all day and night.
At night I have a cool flannel and just place it on some part of my body if I feel too hot.
We haven’t had a fan so far but DH is picking one up as I type.

Would normally have a windows. open but in this heatwave outside air has been so hot we have only opened windows early morning to cool the rooms then closed and curtains shut
As a child, having lived in tropical climates, near the equator and other European hot countries, it’s always advisable to close all window, blinds and curtains as soon as possible and all day against the heat. The time to open them is after sundown to let in the cooler air. All you are doing is letting warmer air into your home.
Right now in the UK, the temperature outside is higher than inside. All my windows, doors, blinds and curtains are all closed and I’m maintaining a temperature of 23° (76f) without using fans. It’s warm, but bearable. Tonight, I’ll open all the windows until 8am next day.
I advised my friends and they’ve seen a big difference.
This has worked for me, years living on the Continent when it was regularly 30C+ and no aircon!
All windows/patio doors etc open first thing when it's cooler outside, then windows shut in whole house, when it gets hotter outside than in to keep hot air out, I close blackout curtains on windows that the sun is shining on, moving round the house with the sun ; once the sun goes down and it starts to cool down outside, then all windows open but shut downstairs when we go to bed. I leave upstairs windows open all night and we have fans in bedrooms.
Bedroom windows firmly shut! The sun is on them all day long, if I had slept with the window open the sun this morning would have started the heat in the bedroom before I was ready to get up. The curtains have not been opened in there for days either.
