Sleeping with the windows open

It’s possibly the hottest night of the year so far. I’ve just been up to pull the bedroom curtains, and noticed that not one of the ten or so houses I can see has their windows open, not even the small ones. I can’t imagine how hot it must be in their bedrooms.

I have at least one bedroom window open all year, and tonight all the upstairs windows are all flung wide, and will stay that way. Please tell me I’m not the only one?

Teacheranne, I angle my plantation slats slightly, no-one can see in and air can flow

I’ll try that, thanks. I do angle them slightly during the day to stop folks looking in but have always shut them tightly at night.

I have a piece of mesh over the window, held on to the frame by double sided Velcro strips which keeps the flies out when I read in bed. That window has a limiter on so it only opens a little way which I had installed when I moved here. So the air flow is not brilliant but better than nothing!

Usually shut as cat comes in from next door.A few open today as it's a bit warmer.Lots of flies too.

Another who has the bedroom window open all year round.

I would love to have my bedroom window open, however the previous owner put french windows in (bungalow) so they are firmly closed at night.

When we've lived abroad...we kept windows closed to keep out the warm air....

I told my computer off last night as it came up Rain Coming.Told it not to be stupid, went to look out of back door and it started to rain then Hail Stones made it a lot cooler and fresher.

I live in a bungalow. I have my small bedroom window open all year as I like a cool/cold bedroom. Non of my big windows are open at night for security reasons but I open most of them during the day until the outside temperature is higher than indoors, then I close the lot. Curtains/blinds closed too.

Daisymae Mon 18-Jul-22 09:38:17

You'll only be cooler if it's colder outside than in. With the current heat spike might be best to cool off the house first thing and close the windows as the heat builds.

MrsKen33 Mon 18-Jul-22 09:37:24

nandad me too. 7 hrs last night ???

Oldnproud Mon 18-Jul-22 09:35:03

Once the outside temperatures fell below the indoor temperature yesterday evening, I opened windows and doors so the house would cool too.

However, I closed the bedroom window when I went to bed, but first hung a reflective silver sheet outside it, then dropped the blind on the inside, to keep the heat of the morning sunshine off that window. That sheet is held in place by trapping it in the closed windows - there's no easy alternative.
On balance, that results in a cooler room in the morning than leaving that window open all night.

Now, at 9.30am, all our windows are closed, and will remain so all day, to keep the hot air out.
They will only be opened again when the temperature outside is once again as low as that inside.

Am I the only one who has slept better than I normally do? I’m an insomniac and if I manage 4 hours sleep I’m lucky. During this hot spell I’ve been sleeping for 6+ hours!
Yes, upstairs windows open here.

Sago Mon 18-Jul-22 09:31:05

I too sleep with my bedroom window open all year.
Most of my neighbours have their windows closed all year!

timetogo2016 Mon 18-Jul-22 09:27:31

All windows closed here to keep the heat out, it works.
We have cavity wall insulation, keeps the heat in in the winter, keeps the heat out in the summer, the autumn and spring can be a pain though.
We ahve a fan on in the hallway and our bedroom/bathroom doors remain open.
Spray essential oils around doors and windows to keep spiders etc out.

Two households are, but I’m fairly sure the rest are not (I don’t stalk them, we’re just fairly chatty/put stuff on our WhatsAp).

Maybe they all have fancy portable air-conditioners - and no thunder flies and spiders and the like!

dragonfly46 Mon 18-Jul-22 08:57:58

Maybe your neighbours are away, many of ours are.

Zonne Mon 18-Jul-22 08:51:42

I have been invaded by what we used to call thunder flies (tiny little black things). It seems a small price to pay for reasonable temperatures overnight, though. .

Oopsadaisy1 Mon 18-Jul-22 06:45:56

Upstairs windows all open, but curtains half pulled downstairs all closed, but it’s another bungalow here as well so the overhanging eaves cut out a lot of the sun and heat.

However. the spiders are moving in! A large black one on the stairs last night. Urgh….

Sara1954 Mon 18-Jul-22 06:10:31

Bedroom windows wide open, and I left the skylight on the landing wide open.
Didn’t sleep too badly actually, better than I was expecting.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 18-Jul-22 05:08:49

My bedroom windows are open all the year round.

MrsKen33 Mon 18-Jul-22 05:03:58

Not movies , mosquitoes for goodness sake

MrsKen33 Mon 18-Jul-22 05:03:10

Windows shut at the moment otherwise invaded by midges and movies. They like me a lot. When DH wakes I will open the windows and spray myself with Jungle Juice. Otherwise I have had 7 hrs sleep which is good for me. Keep cool everyone .

Chewbacca Mon 18-Jul-22 01:31:03

My windows are all open but I know I'll be eaten alive by midges during the night. Open or shut, this heat is a misery to try and sleep in.

VANECAM Mon 18-Jul-22 01:19:28

I’m sleeping downstairs where it is much more bearable. Windows open.

Teacheranne Mon 18-Jul-22 01:00:29

A downside to the plantation shutters I had fitted a few months ago is that with the window open at night when they are shut, no breeze can get through. During the day I leave the slats open to allow the breeze through but I live in a bungalow and sleep in the front room so don’t want to sleep in full view of anyone coming to my front door! Luckily the bedroom does not get any direct sunlight owing to the steep overhand of the roof so it’s the coolest room in the house but I am having to use my fan more.

So far, I’ve been able to sleep as normal wearing a nightie with no covers on.
