I slept well so am up and cooling the house

Every door and window is wide open and so is the loft hatch, I put my bodywarmer on as the cool air is rushing through

I am watching the house temperature fall, this early start worked yesterday and will work today, I have another hour before the sun hits the glass.

Joseanne

The thing they omit to tell us about the heatwave, amongst all the warnings, is how jolly frustrating it is because nothing gets done. I find it tiring doing nothing.

That bothers me as well Joseanne the jobs are piling up because its too hot to do anything but the basics. 31 degrees here now. I also have some breathing problems which compounds things.
My husband has told me to ignore things and sit on the sofa with my book and the fan on. ??

Don’t worry, our ‘heatwave’ only lasted 2 days. The third day was back to grey clouds. Summer of 1976 was much worse as though it was ‘ only’ mid 30 s it went on for weeks and weeks. No a/c of course, then, as now.
We havnt had much rain though and grass is golden/fried.
Noticed your toe post, glad all went well and thanks fir the positive report.

Maya1 As you know, dogs sweat through their paws - I think cats are the same. I regularly dip my cat's feet in a bowl of cold water (he hates it). He ran off for a sulk but is now flat out on our tiled kitchen floor.

It's 35C right now, reminds me of Riyadh but not so bad - you know it's hot when even in the shade it's boiling!

Lovely and cool in Peter Jones, felt like relaxing on the garden furniture and taking advantage of the air con.

Disaster in M&S, I noticed that half of the display cabinets had the blinds down, I thought it was a delivery problem but noticed when I got closer that they were full of food - the refrigeration had broken down! There will be a terrible waste of food if not repaired very soon shock

karmalady, if you have a lot of green beans past their best, there’s a Greek green bean stew which would use them up. Onion and garlic gently fried in olive oil, tomatoes (tinned or fresh) salt and pepper/a stock cube, beans cut up, lots of chopped parsley.
Either in slow oven or simmered gently on the hob.
It’s called fasolakia, we’ve often had it in Greece in September, when people have a glut of beans.
Eat just with bread to mop up juices. Some cubed fried halloumi is a nice addition if you want something extra.

I dare say it could also be made in a slow cooker but I haven’t tried that. I’ve made it at home both with beans past their best, and with frozen ones.

covd, it plays games, makes you think you are better then it pounces again, if you are clear of symptoms 14 days from start then you will be over it, in the meantime know that virus and exercise are not good bedfellows

I am now sweating like a piggie, will have to change my undies later, all because I am looking after my neighbours garden. tbf he has c so they are out and about and away as much as possible and she has done as much as she can to make it easier for me, 19 more days to go. I do it willingly but needed to strip all the french beans off or they will stop producing. I have lots to compost in my bins, all too big too eat. The remainder are either in a green bag in the fridge or now lightly cooked, to have cold. I do have my own dwarf beans that are producing enough for me anyway, don`t need theirs but will not waste them

My arms are already prickly with the heat an sun on me

It wasn't possible to cool the house down during the hight, with it still being so hot at bedtime. That means that the house, which only reached 25° yesterday evening, is already that warm this morning.

Yesterday, by hanging things out of the windows to reflect the heat/ reduce how much direct heat from the sun reached the windows (as well as closing curtains on the inside), the indoor temperature only rose by a couple of degrees, so I'm just hoping that we can keep it to such a small rise again today, taking us to 27°. ?

It's forecast to reach 39° outside, here, but we'll see. It got to 36° yesterday.

Thanks for asking karma. I feel a bit better this morning for managing to sleep ok but not much energy….I doubt any of us have in this heat. Covid does seem rife again. Hope your DS is fully over hers.

karmalady Tue 19-Jul-22 08:27:28

Juliet how are you today? My ds said that day 3 is the worst

MrsK, you just reminded me, I collected cucs from my neighbours greenhouse yesterday, they are away for another 19 days. I am going to make cucumber juice with lemon, maybe also a couple of carrots. I`ll put half in a small bottle for tomorrow

Hells bells, just heard on GBN that there are about 2000 deaths a year from heatstroke. Lots of good tips been on there and list of symptoms, also list of vulnerable people

It was very bearable in the NE yesterday. Until the evening which was then oppressively close and humid.

This morning, it's grey and overcast. ???

karmalady Tue 19-Jul-22 08:19:18

mayal flowers a stressful time for you, hoping that things will be ok

I agree with getting nothing done, I want to be busy but it would be futile, I want to alter a sewing pattern to fit me but I need a clear head and right now I am just absorbed in keeping as cool as possible, being hydrated and so on

I was up early, like so many other,s grateful that I did sleep. checked my weather station and indoor temperature = outdoor temperature, so no windows were opened. Today is going to be much worse than yesterday, it will be hot added to hot. The lowest outside last night was 24

Don`t go anywhere without a puffer, if you are allergic. My sophisticated air filter is still showing excellent but I know that later the VOC indicator will go to red as molecules of gas are emitted from tarmac and other surfaces, all noxious gases. My husband would have been very affected

Dd is going lake swimming before work, I don`t worry about this as she is a triathlete, nevertheless I am always glad when she is back. She will be wearing a wetsuit. Then off to work to wear full ppf3 all day

Shower was lovely this morning, I felt much cooler afterwards. I think I have become continental, up at 4, washing out at 5, now flopped

Maya1 Tue 19-Jul-22 08:16:25

Thank you Howverydareyou. Sorry to hear you have had a bad night.
I will try that wet towel now, lve also got some large pet wipes coming on my Tesco order this morning so l will try both.

Up out with the dog at 6am - the park was heaving with dog walkers, all out early but it was still 25c and the elderly dogs were struggling.

Now sat with a cup of tea, cooking breakfast. Dog laying with a fan on his body.

What a hot night?. I don’t remember ever being so hot. I did sleep ok but fitfully.

Last very hot day hopefully as supposed to be out for lunch tomorrow with a friend.

Cabbie21 Tue 19-Jul-22 08:09:18

To my surprise I slept well, from midnight to 5, then dropped off again til 6.50. I have just watered the pots outside and the fresh air is beautiful.
I was bored yesterday, and spent so much time on my ipad that I have RSI. I will try and get stuck into a book today, but it is hard to concentrate.

HowVeryDareYou Tue 19-Jul-22 07:59:21

I was up at 6, after a restless night of coughing and wheezing. Fed the cat, fed the garden birds, did a bit of ironing, then had a shower. It's already 25 degrees here. Going to ring the doctor, see if I can get some steroids

Mayal Hope your husband gets better soon. Have you tried wiping your dog with a wet towel? I do that with my elderly cat

We all really struggled yesterday. We are near Cambridge and it was very hot. My DH was admitted to hospital yesterday after feeling poorly for 6 months. Hopefully tests will now follow.
The dog and l are really struggling with the heat, normally l would hose him down but he is recovering from an operation so cannot get his wound wet.
I hope everyone keeps safe and cool today.

harrigran Tue 19-Jul-22 07:47:12

Went for a little walk to the postbox just after 7am, it was 23 degrees and quite pleasant. I was surprised at the number of houses that had the windows wide open, we are 100 yards from a busy road, sleep must have been difficult.

Juliet27 Tue 19-Jul-22 07:40:46

Thanks Fanny ?

M0nica Tue 19-Jul-22 07:28:53

Up at 6.00am this morning to water my vegetable garden before it got too hot.

I have come in for breakfast and a lot to drink and will then go out to tidy a small shed, then in, shower and dress and retreat to our nice cool study for the rest of the day. it faces north, we have the windows open and a fan.

singingnutty Tue 19-Jul-22 07:22:45

Woke up about 20 minutes ago after a good night’s sleep amazingly enough. Yesterday 2 GC were here for part of the day and we have other family staying so we kept each other occupied by talking and looking at the thermometer every half hour. It did hit 39 here yesterday (in the shade). We are in the hottest part of England ATM apparently (just south of Doncaster). Not looking forward to today when it is forecast to be even hotter. However, we drank gallons of water and consumed lots of ice cream yesterday so hoping we will manage today in similar fashion.

FannyCornforth Tue 19-Jul-22 06:56:44

Oh Juliet poor you. What a combination of horrid things. thanks Well done for getting a good night’s sleep. Hope you feel better soon and have an okay day.

Ken cucumber soup sounds lovely.

I had an awful night. My bedroom is like a sauna. I went downstairs thinking that I could sleep on the sofa - but I couldn’t get comfortable.?
Anyway, only one more day to go, thank goodness ?

Juliet27 Tue 19-Jul-22 06:12:25

I tested positive in Sunday and with that and the heat yesterday I felt terrible. Found we had no water before I went to bed but with a dose of Beechams All in One and my much cheaper (and more efficient) fan than our Dyson one on, I slept amazingly well. Luckily we have water again this morning. Best of luck everyone with the heat today.

Juliet27 Tue 19-Jul-22 06:03:30

Well as long as it doesn’t come up again MrsKen !?
