Couldn’t resist grin What do you all make of Prince Harry’s latest venture into the world of public speaking?

I don’t agree with the situation re abortion in the USA, but it’s not Harry’s job to criticise his adopted country.

He is one of hundreds of thousands criticising the US anti abortion policies all around the world. Good on him.

I agree Rosie, it would have been far preferable to have a black African to speak at this event.

You could criticise the choice thinking it should be someone who is black and from Africa rather than a member of the ruling family of a country which has a past rooted in colonialism. But I suppose using Harry worked as more people listened to a speech they would usually ignore.

I think it would have been more appropriate to have had a black African deliver the speech. Maybe more people will listen to youtube recordings of Harry's speech, but I was disappointed in how empty the chamber was. There were far more empty seats than taken ones.

maddyone Tue 19-Jul-22 18:35:13

And I haven’t even started on him criticising the country he has chosen to make his home in. Bad manners at the very least!

Lucca, I agree, the numbers of ‘celebrities’ and indeed politicians and royal families (not just ours by any means) who use private jets whilst telling the rest of us that we should take fewer flights really gets my goat. So a moderately paid normal family are told that they shouldn’t take their annual EasyJet/Ryanair flight to Spain or Greece for their one holiday of the year, whilst people who think the rules don’t apply to them, and this clearly includes Prince Harry, are free to take as many private jets a year as they think they deserve. This is the reality of the situation. And it annoys me. I can just about accept that maybe a royal visit/tour, or a political visit may, and I mean may because it may not, be an occasion when a private jet needs to be used, but many, including Harry, use them them simply because they can. To go on holiday or to play a polo match. It’s unacceptable. But don’t you dare cram on to your EasyJet flight and go on your only holiday of the year. Lecturing people about climate change, when you yourself contribute huge amounts of carbon to the atmosphere is pathetic and entitled. Lead by example, that’s the way to do it. And none of our current royal family, including the Queen ( although this thread is not really about her) do that because they all, every one of them, use private jets and helicopters when it pleases them to do so.

Well I thought it was a good speech. It covered the terrible right wing backlash we are seeing in politics (would anyone expect him not to criticise the US after the awful abortion legislation?). Dealt well with the problems of Africa and praised people working to solve those problems. Above all it referenced Mandela throughout which given that was the reason for it seems pretty accurate.

I’m not fussed if they hold hands but if it’s bad for one couple…

I believe I may refer to members of the RF in whatever way I like !! Without being really offensive I mean. Plus I spell their names correctly instead of deliberately wrong.

It's just we haven't seen the evidence to support that the Cambridges " are often photographed " holding hands. Be a shame if we slipped into Boris mode and thought that just by saying something it's true and no evidence needed.
I never spell any of their names wrongly either (never forget the h in Meghan), and make a point of using Catherine's correct name spelled correctly smile

The speech was OK as far as it went, I thought his delivery was a bit 'flat'. I do find it ironic that people with enormous mansions, jetset lifestyles, and privilege beyond compare (no not just Harry!) think to lecture on saving the planet. They forget the bit where it's you they want to make the necessary sacrifices.

I started the thread and I asked, a little mischievously, what others thought about the speech, so thank you to those who have commented on the speech. I realise threads digress though. Anyway I understood that Prince Harry was asked to be a keynote speaker at a conference in rememberance of Nelson Mandela. Apparently he did begin with Mandela, but brought into his speech the fact that his mother met Mandela (she did) but then used the speech to speak about irrelevant subjects, irrelevant with regard to Mandela. He spoke about climate change, a laudable enough subject (though little to do with Mandela) but this sounds insincere coming from one of the kings of private jet usage. Two faced? Yes, he is.

Sorry Maddy I have not listened to the whole speech just read a summary in the Times. This whole thing about celebrities talking about climate change but jetting round the world is pretty common I think and is not good !

The Cambridges are often photographed holding hands.

Oh my Lord ….criticising the Cambridges is high treason . Get thee to the Tower !

Not yet it's not, but apparently it's acceptable to refer to the Cambridges as the Duke and Duchess of perfect. ??

Can't say I've seen photographs of them holding hands recently, perhaps someone can provide links?

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 19-Jul-22 18:03:21

The Cambridges are I’m sure, perfectly pleasant but dull. The Sussexes are the opposite. Just saying.

That is funny Joseanne about the steps, although in these days she was probably told to point it out in case he fell and sued them.

Prentice maybe you are right using the word "childish" and that is why his wife mothers him with back rubs, (she did a lot of that on his arm prior to his making his speech). We know he is insecure.
Another funny moment for me was when an older black lady led him to the podium but she markedly stopped to point out the 3 steps onto the stage as though to tell him not to trip up like a little boy might! He was 10 times more agile than she was.

Shelmiss Tue 19-Jul-22 17:39:28

Good grief how many more times can he use his mother in a speech? I think he’s become a bit of a bore with all that now.

Prentice Tue 19-Jul-22 17:35:35

Why would she hold hands with another adult? This I do not understand.I have many friends but we do not hold hands to go anywhere.I have noticed that Megan does cling to Prince Harry and holds his hand or arm and rubs his back in public.
Is she insecure or is he?
Prince Harry does appear to enjoy lecturing others and this fits with his what I would call petulance, it is very childish in a grown man.

The thing that bemuses me is the hand holding. She looked smart and professional which would look good if she wanted to go into politics, but how feeble it looks holding hands. It smacks of how little confidence I have that I must hold my husbands hand at all times. I can’t think of anyone else in the public eye that hold hands constantly.

How do you account for the fact that that rag the daily mail
have supported a black outspoken woman: Kemi Badenoch.

She’s extremely right wing.
