“That’ll see me out”

One of my father’s favourite phrases, whether applied to a suit, coat, lawnmower or camera!
Today I took delivery of a new coat (White Stuff sale, £60 off) and found myself thinking just that. So what else will “see me out” ?
Is Rosie to be my last dog, am I on my last cooker/ fridge/ sofas / dining table etc?
Obviously not my washing machine or dishwasher - they will conk out the minute I feel a bit short of money and the car… who knows but I do hope I might run to an EV in a couple of years.
What will “see you out” ?

It does cross my mind & I've thought "Good grief, I have so many socks, will I get to use them all?"
I won't let it put me off buying something that will bring joy, or comfort, though.

My cats. I'm late 50s. I imagine they'll be my last, if they both live a full life.

It is a phrase I never intend to use.

My father lived into his early 90s fit in mind and body until his last, short illness, did for him. Three of his siblings have got into their 90s healthy and well. The youngest, now 95, is still with us, and joined us for a family meet-up only three weeks ago. It was a journey of over 100 miles both ways. She came with her daughter and was part of the event, chatting to everyone and knowing who we are.

I am 78, fit and healthy, in mind and body and I see no reason, at the moment why I should not emulate the older generation of my family..

rewiring is starting here next week- that will help sell the house whenever. I intended to get my money's worth out of it.

Shoes last me a long time mainly because I can no longer walk very far so the last two pairs I bought from Hotter and have not been worn yet will definitely see me out.

I agree with Maw that white goods such as washing machines and dishwashers should last longer but as we all know it is usually more cost-effective to replace. they are unlikely to see me out.

We had to replace our shower last week and decided we didn't need a 25 year guarantee! ?

Maw I actually looked at that coat, it's lovely and won't date. I have one of White Stuff's reversible ones, bought a few years ago and get lots of compliments, when I wear it.

It's now reduced from over £200 to £50 on the Otrium site.

I've just ordered that, Marydoll - thanks for the heads up. I hope it fits, but they have extended the returns window, so I can send it back if not.

We bought a new Honda CRV-EX last year. I didn’t consciously think ‘this will see me out’ but realistically it will. I no longer drive, we thought carefully about what car to buy, Mr. B is very happy with it and we have always looked after our cars and kept them for around 10 years or more.

Marydoll Mon 25-Jul-22 16:29:15

Doodledog, I find that White Stuff are true to size.
I didn't pay the full price, but you certainly got a better bargain than me.
I love that coat!

This why, at 82, I daren’t get another cat. It would almost certainly outlive me. I’ve been saying this for ten years or so.

My neighbour will be 94 next month and is always buying stuff for her house and garden.

Marydoll Mon 25-Jul-22 16:30:12

*Blossoming^, DH bought that car too and says that this will be his last!

Dare I tell you that I got a further 20% off? I got it for £41.95 including delivery grin.

rosie1959 Mon 25-Jul-22 16:33:04

I brought the same coat last October did get it I believe at 20% off the original selling price just reminded me I had it only worn in twice
Hope it doesn’t see me out lol
I am only 5’2 but I have to be careful what I wear it with as it’s quite short

Blossoming Mon 25-Jul-22 16:39:05

Marydoll Mr. B is 4 years younger than me so it may not be his last grin

Doodledog bargain!

Hellogirl1 Mon 25-Jul-22 16:39:27

When Mia died last year I said we weren`t having any more cats as I was almost 78 then. But we saw Billy, who was almost 12 years old, and fell in love with him. If he does see me out, one of Lynne`s carers can`t wait to adopt him, so I know he`ll be alright. When it comes to things for the house, if I really want it, and can afford it, I`ll buy it, whether it`ll see me out or not.

A woman after my own heart!

I always managed to find voucher codes for Otrium.
Now you have forced me to have another look, when I have already spent a fortune this month!

I spent £50 on my last order, the original price of the clothes, I bought, was £375!

Doodledog Mon 25-Jul-22 16:45:01

I shall think of you when wearing it, Marydoll grin. Thanks again.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 25-Jul-22 16:48:39

Nice coat.
Our cats are now 12 years old. OH said when we got them that they’d be our last cats!
We are spending a fortune on decorating a lot of the house! Will it see us out? Who knows.

lemsip Mon 25-Jul-22 17:01:40

i do think twice before spending large sums of money on 'things'.

MrsKen33 Mon 25-Jul-22 17:24:14

Just bought a Loden coat. That will see me out, my DD and my GDs if they are lucky

It's a terrible phrase, made even more terrible by the reality!

I bought a new bed around 17 years ago and now at nearly 68 if I buy another soon it could well see me out shock

Oh, tell me about it.
I have been thinking very seriously about turning my dining room into a bedroom for me so that I am self contained on one floor but keep thinking ,is it worth it?
I turned 85 two weeks ago.
I have fairly shabby couches, again is it worth it.
It is actually a depressing situation.
Anyone who can go for anything and know they can should go for it, whether clothing, furniture of white goods.
You may well see them out and get to replace them.

Do It,it is worth it. A downstairs bedroom always comes in handy even if you never use it it is peace of mind. Do it now when you can be bothered to think about it. My mum had a bungalow so never had to bother about getting upstairs on crutches etc.
Her friend changed a downstairs room and never had to move she was always living beside relations and friends.
Good Luck with it and make it nice for yourself.flowers

We used to know an old Scottish lady, she was magnificent. She was in her nineties, but there was nothing she wouldn’t have a go at.

When she announced she was having a very smart new kitchen, we must have looked a bit surprised, but she said she didn’t want anyone turning their noses up at her wake.

Indeed. Pretty much everything bar perishable goods will see me out !

Is that coat orange or red ?

aggie Mon 25-Jul-22 18:35:03

Well I’ve just ordered new glasses , the ones I have are really ok , but dated
I wanted a nicer model, so I hope I get the wear out of them
I’m 85 next birthday , mobility isn’t great , but it’s no reason to skimp on something I will use , I don’t wear out my shoes , so that’s a saving ?

Mine?
Navy with a red and teal overcheck.
Or the reversible one?
That looks like orange. (Currently on offer on eBay for £50)
