Tuna allergy: anyone know anything?

is this tinned tuna or freshly cooked.
i became ill once after eating some marinaded fish in a restaurant.
i read up on it and found out that changes can occur if it is kept too long after cooking, similar to metal poisoning. different to bacterial growth.
but unpleasant to experience.
i was a bit doubtful about the practices at that restaurant. i could imagine their serving something if asked for, rather than ditching it from a few days ago.

It's Waitrose tuna in a jar. The jars were well within date and both very firmly sealed, so I ruled out contamination. Besides which DH wasn't affected.

I'm just wondering because I've heard of people who have developed allergies to a wide range or foods, but never tuna.

I think you can become intolerant to most food or drink, not necessarily allergic. I became intolerant to garlic about 5 years ago. It gives me night sweats as well as making me dehydrated. My brother gags every time he has salmon, a fish he loved. A friend is allergic to kiwi. If she touches one it brings her out in a rash, if she touches her lips or eats anything that has touched a kiwi her lips swell and her throat starts to restrict. She has an epipen to manage this as it could make her very ill or kill her. So yes, maybe you have become intolerant to tuna.

Mr. B cannot eat Tuna or Salmon. He feels sick and turns pale and shaky.

DD1 had to sit on the 'allergic' table at primary school as she seemed to be allergic to some tinned fish but not all. It was a pain to sort the manufacturers out but some were worse than others,

At this time of year we have the occasional Salad Nicoise (with tuna), but the last couple of times I've had it I've felt quite nauseous afterwards. Is there such a thing as an allergy to tuna?

My DH is having it again tonight and I'm wondering whether to try for a third time to be sure... but I don't want to be up half the night. Grrrr.

Do you use anchovies in the dressing ? If so it could be that and not the tuna. A family member has a sensitivity to anchovies - it’s not exactly an allergy, but they make her feel sick so she avoids them and checks ingredients on various things to make sure they aren’t included as they’re used for seasoning in lots of things.

After having a severe allergic response to something, I had a number of pin prick tests. There was a small response to all of them caused by nickel in the needle but the only one that showed a greater response was tuna. On the day of the allergic reaction the only things I had eaten were a tuna sandwich and a currant bun. Previously I’d never had any problem with tuna but have avoided it since.

Thank you for all the feedback. So I'm not alone. My goodness: I've been so lucky so far — been able to eat anything I wanted. Bit of a shock to realise I may not be able to go on like this. Why couldn't it have been ice-cream or cake I became allergic to?

No anchovies in the dressing, I'm afraid we're not that authentic. How interesting to hear that others have experienced similar. I hope it won't spread to salmon. We have it most weeks and it would be difficult to replace.

I have to say that tonight when DH opened the jar of tuna the smell alone made me go peely-wally, so I suspect he may have to eat it when I'm not around.

A friend of mines daughter had quite a severe reaction to tinned tuna in spring water, her face & eyes swelled up, she had been fine with tuna in brine or oil.

I looked this up just yesterday as tinned tuna has given me diarrhoea recently. I thought that tuna must be another item to add to my list of items to avoid with my IBS, but I read that it can contain toxins which survive the canning process.

Completely out of the blue my husband developed an intolerance to some fish in his mid 60’s. This now includes, cod, haddock, tuna and salmon but he’s fine with seafood (except crab) and flat fish like, bream, bass and plaice. If he eats any of the foods to which he is intolerant he is violently ill within an hour of consumption. How he misses fish and chips.

Before accusing the Tuna try it in another way. Make the salad up yourself, it could be the oil has been changed among other ingredients as it is less expensive.

I have noticed some jars on supermarket shelves are warm,that could make a difference especially with fish.
