Why don’t they change the British National anthem?

To Land of Hope and Glory? Stop singing about one hereditary person and sing about the nation!

MissAdventure Sat 30-Jul-22 11:32:31

Perhaps Charles will change it, when... you know...

Land of Hope and Glory is a Tory Anthem. No thanks. The God Save the Queen one is bad enough and wouldn’t sing it if paid.

We will keep our own thanks - ‘Flower of Scotland’ and others can have their own choice.

The Scottish one is so depressing I feel like slitting my wrists when I hear it. I am an atheist but Land of Hope and Glory doesn’t bother me I actually quite like it

You only have to listen to some anthems from other countries to hear how uplifting and inspiring they can be but ours is a miserable dirge. I agree with others that we should celebrate and be proud of the country and not a member of the royal family.

There are some good words in all of them so perhaps take the best bits in an amalgamation, with any references to religion to recognise there are many and also none in this wonderful diverse country we all live in.
Get the songwriting "Sirs" on the job together - Paul McCartney, Elton and Andrew Lloyd Webber to create an Anthem for the UK of today and hopefully tomorrow too.

The English have an anthem - it was recently heard at the Commonwealth Games (there’s a funny tradition!) Jerusalem was played when England won a gold medal

Have you heard the arrangement by Benjamin Britten it is sublime in its beauty?

Soniah Sat 30-Jul-22 11:17:58

Why have another old song, why not write something completely new?

Parsley3 Sat 30-Jul-22 11:16:28

A misspelling of ovaries?

sandwichgeneration Sat 30-Jul-22 11:15:50

Nothing wrong with Boaty McBoatface although the public would probably vote for "Sweet Caroline". But we do need something more uplifting with no mention of the Commonwealth, the royals or religion.

Overus ? What are they ?

scrabble Sat 30-Jul-22 11:08:53

I would like it changed if only to stop people (also professional singers) finishing with overus.

I’d like the tune of Land of Hope and Glory, with different words. But finding new words that wouldn’t make half the population cringe would probably be a tall order.

How about getting a young rap DJ to create a mash up of all of the suggested music? We would then have to learn all the new words.

I think Jerusalem is a great tune but the words are very suss. No the feet didn’t walk upon England ‘ mountains green.’Anyway, most mountains are in Wales or Scotland not England. Sorry William Blake.

It’s poetry! It doesn’t have to be factually correct.

Very clever grumppasmile

The Flowers of Scotland was originally a folk song composed by two wonderful folk singers The Corries. Sadly one of them died some years ago. They both had lovely distinctive voices. You can probably find them on YouTube.

Allsorts Thu 28-Jul-22 21:32:56

I like Land of Hope and Glory.

grumppa Thu 28-Jul-22 21:18:25

Something can be done with the current tune. How about:-

Praise our Prime Minister,
Dexter or sinister,
May he/she succeed.
Only some time will tell,
If he/she governs well,
In times of need.
If he/she turns out a flop,
Then he/she will get the chop,
Just like a weed.

You can reclaim the three lions, after all we've got a dragon!

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Jul-22 20:46:43

Yes, you are but not everyone loves football ? ?

Deedaa Thu 28-Jul-22 20:46:00

I really like The Star Spangled Banner, but not much good for us (or for the Americans now with all that "Land of the Free" stuff)

Getting someone to write a new anthem can be dodgy. The Italian anthem was written by a student and has many very turgid verses which are fortunately rarely sung.

Cornwall of course has Trelawney!

How about the English national anthem being ‘Football’s Coming Home’? That’s a great song, and everybody knows the words, but could be adapted to fit - I can’t get it out of my head when I hear it.

Oh no ???

I was going to suggest the Three Lions On My Shirt. ⚽️???⚽️ Forgot the English aren’t allowed to be proud of their homeland!

lixy Thu 28-Jul-22 20:26:53

I thought the English National Anthem had changed to Sweet Caroline during the Jubilee? grin

volver Thu 28-Jul-22 20:16:10

That was a rather spirited version of GSTQ at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, wasn't it? ?
