There are a few words that (a) always set me off giggling and possibly only one that (b) always make me cringe.
(a) moist ( tiny squeak) , gusset( chortle), flange ( lost it altogether) .
(b) cu*t. cant even believe I've typed that.

What are yours?

Gusset for me is a cross between a cringe and a snigger

Scribbles

Succulent makes me shudder. People use it to describe good food but, for reasons I can't understand, it makes me think of a blocked drain.

Years ago I watched a play on TV, think it was a Harold Pinter one where the landlady says to her lodger “ do you want fried bread” and he says “ succulent” she replies “ don’t say that word to a married woman”
I only wish I could remember the name of the play, I’m sure Thora Hird played the landlady.

Apologies for going off piste.

Gransnet sometimes appear rather spiteful. Why bring up the name our grandchildren call us as a word you dislike, knowing many of us will be called by the name- surely you wouldn't mention this to a friend. We should try to be supportive of each other.

I remember Johnny Cradock causing hilarity when he said may all your donuts turn out like Fannies!!!

Someone used the word bint to describe a woman the other day.

It was ‘gently explained’ to him that that was unacceptable.

Ditto bird, chick, squeeze, the missus…

Just use their names!!

I like both Granny and Grandma. I always thought Nan sounded disrespectful, when I was a child.

How about ‘skirt’?

I don’t cringe at F**k - until it is 95% of speech scripted in films.

I am Brummie born and bred but detest the use of "Bab" and "the wife".Both are local terms here.

Madashell Fri 29-Jul-22 12:05:11

DH used to chuckle at ‘ Pulled Pork’ and ‘Jerk Chicken.’ ?

MissAdventure Fri 29-Jul-22 12:15:14

It kind of puts you off eating it, when you put it like that
smile

Philippa111 Fri 29-Jul-22 12:15:37

yes, the C word... so derogatory even though feminists have tried to reclaim it.
Also poorly!! Not poor, unwell.
The word 'like' put into every sentence...as in 'Like, she did it ,like!
Parents who call each other Mummy and Daddy..Same for dog owners.
Faeces.... yuck!
Bugg*r.
Don't mind the F word as an expletive but not to describe the act.

I hate it when people say My Bad

MissAdventure Fri 29-Jul-22 12:20:48

Is it time to bring in the glottal stop, I wonder?

If so, I'll do it now and get it out the way. grin

merlotgran Fri 29-Jul-22 12:22:01

Having just heard the Rooney/Vardy verdict I would imagine Peter Andre now cringes every time he hears the word, Chipolata! ?

Quizzer Fri 29-Jul-22 12:24:48

Hubby - on cards or spoken.
Passed instead of died.
Sitting room instead of lounge - this is a regional thing.
My teenage DGDs get the giggles every time their Dad points out the tits on the bird feeder!!

Flo122 Fri 29-Jul-22 12:24:51

Definitely moist.
Hubster
hun
babe
the wife (never hear "the husband")
bless her/him (said constantly now)
I am so spiritual (gets on my wick)

mokryna Fri 29-Jul-22 12:25:19

Furbabies is the worst one. I don’t like belly, nana ( neither in English nor in the French meaning).

MissAdventure Fri 29-Jul-22 12:27:32

A lot of people don't like belly.
Why is that, does anyone know?

PollyDolly Fri 29-Jul-22 12:46:05

Hun, babe, dude, chick, fur baby, gob, minge, up the duff, hubster............Im going to be here all day at this rate. Might come back with more later......time for lunch.

Tuskanini Fri 29-Jul-22 12:48:35

Have you noticed that Pepa Pig's daddy is a scrotum?

marta74 Fri 29-Jul-22 12:49:34

I hate the term Babe.
