I loathe moist like so many others, hubby also makes me cringe. As for snigger, mallabunda (spelling?) from my yoga days, no idea why. There was a slightly deaf lady who would always reply “have a nice day” at the namaste at the end of the class. I’m not sure if anyone else heard it but I always wanted to laugh.

Phlegm even looks ugly as a written word.

Shag is a horrible coarse expression.

An expression I see a lot on mumsnet and that really makes me cringe is 'picky tea' to describe a bits and pieces type meal.

I’m in Durham. Not heard lisk or oxter used for ages, but I know what and where they are.

My friend is from Durham, we met there and used to swop words that were common to where we came from. Did you use the word singlet or even dickie {another that makes me snigger] but means a vest as well. Our pits were deep and very hot so the men were really stripped down.
It's the really old men who use the words now.

Although no laughing matter, the word 'bunion' never ceases to make me giggle, also 'budge'. I could write a book about my 'back passage' and it is a frequent topic of conversation at family gatherings. Come to think of it the word 'gathering' makes me laugh when it is referring to a boil.

I wonder what it is about the word moist that makes so many women cringe?

Fanny always makes me laugh. I had a knitted doll, as a wartime child, which was named Fanny Adams. In presume that my parents called her that, as a joke, but I proudly introduced her to everyone by that name. It must have raised a few eyebrows ?

Hubby is awful, and I was shocked when I heard my right on sister in law using it. Also Mummy and daddy for pets. I don’t like grown adults saying “bestie”, or that they are going out with their “girlfriends”. What’s wrong with “friends”?

I do agree! It certainly makes me cringe. Is it an Americanism? I think it may be.

Although there are lots of words that make me cringe, I can’t think of any that make me snigger. I don’t use euphemisms if I can help it, so that maybe the reason..

I didn't know words come with rules about where the emphasis should be.

I hate the word eclectic. I also can't stand it when people say currate or crate when they mean create. Oh! and nuculous instead of nucleus.
