Can I ask ... I have noticed on threads people have put ... reported or reporting ... also access denied ... I am asking as when I have looked at the thread to me I find nothing untowards ... also after seeing reported etc still comments after ... I possibly am missing something but can't see it ... thanks for your help

This thread has been derailed a bit, including by myself. The OP asked about reporting.
Getting back to that Gransnet rely on is to report as they cannot view everything posted. The spam, the one's that are racist, homophobic, or even a bit dodgy need reporting and it helps others if someone let's posters know it has been reported.

Well I hope we've all learnt how to punctuate to the standards expected of a Gran.

The day is not wasted. confused

Will we all be getting marks out of 10 from now on?

I hope not mine would be -10 I can't spell and my grammar is appalling.
We now should all have the knowledge that it is no one's fault if they cannot spell there might be an underlying cause i.e. Dyslexia and that was spelt wrong but for the auto-correct.
If we ridicule people they will stop posting and then we are making Gransnet an elite little cabal. of sanctimonious old biddies.
I lived next to one of the brightest people I have ever known, Cambridge educated to a very high level. They came round with a petition they wanted me to sign but their top statement was covered I asked why and was told they could not spell and it had not been auto-corrected. I said neither could I and it was passed over and I read it, the spelling was just like mine.

Can I just ask why you always use three full stops instead of just one?

It's not three full stops, it's an ellipsis, used for a breath-taking pause in speaking and reading.

According to the Cambridge dictionary an ellipsis marks omitted words in a piece of text, where the omission doesn't change the text's meaning.

So you're all wrong grin wink

........

No point banging on about grammar and punctuation rules, and ignoring the online one, which is that it is bad form to criticise someone else's use of grammar and punctuation.

I'm glad some has pointed out that this a discussion forum. Not an essay writing competition.

I write as I speak which maybe doesn't 'translate' well but........!!

I love a hyphen too.

And my English teacher would give me detention for starting 3 paragraphs with the word I!! Hmmmm - is it a word? It only has one letter........

farview Sat 30-Jul-22 10:37:48

I've always done ....also
Have been pulled up about it before on GN.....its just how I write...each to their own eh?....?

Baggs Sat 30-Jul-22 10:34:43

Just so, chewy, and I think questioning someone's perfectly comprehensible style on GN – "may I ask why...?" when it's very easy to work out why – is tantamount to passive aggression.

Chewbacca Sat 30-Jul-22 10:29:05

It's a casual discussion forum, not and essay-writing competition. It is, and as long as we can understand what's being put across, it really doesn't matter if a post is spelt, or punctuated, to A Level standard does it?

Chewbacca Sat 30-Jul-22 10:25:49

Blossoming that was so quick! grin

does it matter? it is a pause!

Sorry, ahadn't got as far as you post, lemsip. Have now ? ?

Baggs Sat 30-Jul-22 10:22:20

Of course, one doesn't need to take a breath-taking pause while reading but it's the same idea – a lesser break than a full stop.

Aggressive?

Fair enough. I prefer "assertive", but hey ho. ?

Actually I have a couple of bugbears. Why do people use “can I” when they mean “may I” and “less” when they mean “fewer”? Also, who is going to mark our posts out of ten?

Elegran Sat 30-Jul-22 10:20:25

" others, and " Sorry about the typo that missed the comma.

Blossoming Sat 30-Jul-22 10:17:51

Aggressive?

volver Sat 30-Jul-22 10:14:32

Ohh, in the last 24 hours I've been called patronising and condescending. What shall I go for to get a third description?

I know.

Correct

^So why did GNHQ delete them in the first place?^

No idea Calendargirl that's why I queried it with GNHQ! But they were very nice about it, said they'd go back and check, did so and then confirmed the posts were absolutely fine and would be reinstated.

If they just delete posts willy nilly because one particular poster doesn’t approve of it, for whatever reason, then no wonder there are so many deleted posts. Good point!

That’s strange and disconcerting. I had three posts deleted on one thread a while ago. Wish I’d asked why . I didn’t bother because it was one of those polarised, no compromise rather unpleasant threads with report buttons working over time
You’ve mAde me wonder if I and others were deleted without due process ?

Someone tell the Cambridge dictionary they are wrong.

daresay is not a word in general usage.

Nuance, my dear, nuance....

Patronising. I wonder why the Cambridge dictionary doesn't feel the need to inform that correct usage is "dare say"
