What comics did you read as a child?

Following on from some comments in the ‘Common’ thread, what did you read and enjoy?

As a large family of boys and girls we had a mixture. The Beano (probably everyone’s favourite), Beezer, Topper, Eagle and Rover. Our cousins who lived nearby had Bunty and Dandy so we could read those too. Later on we had ‘Look and Learn’ and I started reading Jackie as a teenager.

We were bought comics to share and as we were brothers and sisters we got The Beano, The Dandy, Beezer and my dad had The Film Fun. Sometimes my friends would stare School Friend or Girl with me.

The Beano, Topper and School Friend for me, and Eagle when. I could persuade the boy next door to swap it for my Topper so that I could read Dan Dare! We had to swap back though. I also loved Classics Illustrated when I could get my hands on a copy. Sometimes my adult brother would bring me one as a treat. The Count of Monte Christo and Homer’s Iliad were my favourites. I hoarded and read the print off them all!

Comics read, The Beano, TV21 and The Eagle. Worked in the Art College he attended and Dan Dare is celebrated.

Does anyone remember Teddy Bear?
I still have three of the Christmas annuals, much used and falling in pieces but cherished. This was the first - I was 4. And yes, I could read it myself!

From Look and Learn
Nurse Susan and Doctor David are two young siblings who run a Toys Hospital where they play at being doctor and nurse. Toys are always getting broken and Susan and David know that often all they need is a little tender loving care to make them better again. Their friend Colin is happy to join in the fun – he drives the Toy Hospital Ambulance!

I remember Nuse Susan and Doctor David from Teddy Bear. Maybe they changed allegiance for a pay rise!

I got Bunty and Judy, after Dandy and Beano.my older brother got Jackie and I thought it was very exotic and grown up. I now enjoy reading Beano with my grandsons. Did anyone else get the one with words of the topical songs? Can’t remember the name. Was it “record”?

Clevedon Mon 15-Aug-22 17:04:01

ALANaV Mon 15-Aug-22 17:28:41

Bunty and Judy a well as School Friend ...later 'Boyfriend' ...one time at work the receptionist took a message for me from my friend who said 'Can you come over tonight and bring all your old Boyfriends ' ....the receptionist ( then a middle aged lady ...I was a teenager (then !) was horrified ...she said Are you having a party ? I had to explain Boyfriend was a comic/teenage magazine ! My brother had Dandy, Beano and Eagle...and some obscure US comics left at our local shop by the USAF servicemen from nearby bases !

Love this thread.
I had Playhour and Jack & Jill when small. Later on had Cor!, followed by Sandy and then Jackie (taking over my Sisters subscription). Also had Riding, Pony and Lucky Rider. My sister had Princess Tina and Fab 208 as well as Jackie ( I also loved reading all these when she had finished with them). I still have some of my Sandy annuals as well as a Princess Tina Pony book. I still enjoy dipping into them from time to time. I managed to get a copy of the book in the picture from a book club.

I read bunty. Loved it and it started my love of magazines. I later read Jackie and loving which was so grown up. Woman’s weekly now!

Froggyspawn Mon 15-Aug-22 20:52:27

Look and Learn - the educational value was not appreciated at all, I thought the only good bit was the Trigan Empire grin
And then I had Sandy.
I think Schoolfriend was a bit before my time but we had an old Schoolfriend annual which I loved and reread ( again, the Four Marys!)

Tina1957 Mon 15-Aug-22 21:04:01

I absolutely loved the bounty, cutting out the clothes on the back page foe the doll. I would keep the copies every week for my younger sister to read.

I used to have Girl and my brother Eagle. A classmate had Girl as well and we always knew the saints stories during RE.

Hollycat Mon 15-Aug-22 21:42:12

I started off with Rainbow, then went onto Beano, Dandy, Bunty, School Friend, Girl (sister paper to Eagle) . Our school insisted we read The Children’s Newspaper, I detested it with a passion.
