Scotland has just appointed the first 'period dignity officer'. A man.
That really does beggar belief. I'm with Martina on this.

Somebody has been doing a bit of digging about this appointment. And not everything in the garden looks rosy.

Well done Mumsnetters!!
They are such good diggers and don't take any sh*t rubbish ?

Baggs Wed 17-Aug-22 12:54:35

Quote from the man himself: "I’m absolutely buzzing about it. It’s definitely pioneering as Scotland is the first to do this. It’s about making people aware of the availability of period products for anyone of any gender , whenever they need it."

I didn't know until I had read the article (and its following comments) that gay men sometimes use tampons, obviously not in their non-existent vaginas. I can never un-know that now.

But they won't be the "women of any gender" because gay men are men, right?

That does seem to put a different complexion on it but only that it seems that this appears to be a 'person' who is favoured, not the fact it is a male.

Baggs Wed 17-Aug-22 12:59:56

If, as I'd already assumed, the job is about "making people aware of the [free] availability of period products", then I've no objection to the post being given to a man. As described there it's a logistics thing and maybe he has training in that kind of task.

Haven't read the Mumsnet link yet....

In between all the hysteria and contra defence, the accusations of wokeism and statements of support, why was this post needed at all? If it is now mandatory to provide period products, then surely the schools and cafes, hospitals or whatever could simply buy them? Or is that too easy? I assume nowhere has a lavatory paper officer, and most places manage to sort that out. Or do I have my simple hat on today?

Aveline Wed 17-Aug-22 13:40:16

Good point HousePlantQueen. It's not like period products are hard to find. Somehow we all managed up till now and surely schools and commercial premises can work out how to track them down.
Could this man's salary be put to better use?

Aveline Wed 17-Aug-22 13:41:01

'A Lavatory Paper Officer'! grin

If that's all the job entails, then fair enough, anyone could do it, especially on that salary.

All it needs is someone capable of producing large notices to announce that free sanitary products are available in the machines, sticking them up in all lavatories throughout Tayside and ensuring there is another person replenishing the dispensers frequently.

Does the job come with transport included?

bit of a bum job. Sorry couldn't help it

Callistemon21 Wed 17-Aug-22 13:51:58

Actually, as a male, it could be possible that, if he goes into schools to talk to boys about menstruation, they might listen to a man and might stop teasing and bullying girls about having periods and all it entails.

As someone who has a tenuous connection with one of the institutions involved with this, (see above), I'd just like to say that the sh!t stirring and unfounded accusations about this position and the person appointed to it are execrable. But, unfortunately, not unexpected.

The lack of awareness on this thread and the completely groundless accusations, just make me sick.

Skydancer Wed 17-Aug-22 22:30:09

It’s stupid.

Callistemon21 Wed 17-Aug-22 22:30:19

??

Hope this helps.

Such intelligent and apposite comments.

Callistemon21 Wed 17-Aug-22 22:38:18

I'm surprised you bother with us at all.

In a library in Edinburgh, there was a notice on the toilet door about free products, but none inside.
I asked and was told that kids were spoiling them so now they were kept at the desk and had to be requested.
Great sad

It struck me too, HousePlantQueen that this post seemed a bit unnecessary. I've seen free period products in various places for quite a while now, so some organisations seem to be managing perfectly well. My hat must be a bit simple like yours. ?

I think he's meant to persuade businesses to provide them for customers and staff, as well.

HI, I'm not so sure that this is wrong. We have always wanted equality, not a one way street.

Maybe no eligible women wanted it, and presumably there was some sort of selection process and the role went to the best person for the job.

I don't know how much it is costing overall nor whether it is a waste of money or not.

Equality does not mean having men talking about our female functions. Not does equality mean we get called 'guys' and femaleness cancelled. Equality has never meant the same. We are not men and men are not us. Womankind is being cancelled and we need to fight this every single day. men identifying as women does not make them a woman, merely deluded. It is wrong in every way to have a man appointed in this role. It is sick.

amazonia Thu 18-Aug-22 12:09:58

Part of the job description is about engaging young people who mensturate (girls!) from a variety of backgrounds. Great so far, but how many young girls are going to engage with a man (especially one that they will consider old)? I can't see many girls from some strict religious backgrounds would come forward either. I'm all for the best person for the job but I'm not sure a man is on this occasion.

Mallin Thu 18-Aug-22 12:31:14

After reading the job description I’m surprised that anyone, male or female, actually applied for the job

Rene72 Thu 18-Aug-22 12:34:29

I just think this is another way of cancelling women. He mentioned ‘people who menstruate’…surely he means FEMALES, in other words girls or women. After all, only women menstruate. If I were a young teenager I’d be embarrassed to approach a man about starting my periods and which products to use and how to use a tampon. And why would he want this job? Is it the woke brigade at it again?

At least Scotland is doing something about the scandal of period poverty - good for them. What difference does it make if the person in charge is male or female? I always had a rule of ‘best person for the job’ when making appointments and it never failed me.

Part of the job is to go into schools and talk to children about periods and any problems/questions. Can you see a shy 12 year old confiding in a man? I can't.

Peaseblossom Thu 18-Aug-22 12:43:38

Baggytrazzas seriously?! Maybe they should appoint a female as testicle officer.
