I expect that he has been appointed because he has the necessary project management skills. It has nothing to do with the SNP government this time apart from their policy to provide free sanitary products. In my young day, I would have welcomed those little baskets of tampons and towels that I see in toilets these days. It is a good thing.

Well said. And well done ScotGov for having that policy.

Makes you wonder how poorer people managed in the past though. Perhaps some girls just missed a lot of school.

At least Scotland is doing something about the scandal of period poverty - good for them. What difference does it make if the person in charge is male or female? I always had a rule of ‘best person for the job’ when making appointments and it never failed me.

The job description gives no information as to what knowledge and experience the successful candidate requires, simply a cliche-ridden list of abilities : energy, enthusiasm, excellent communication and IT skills, etc etc.

You might want to have a look at the actual job description in the link. Or are you one of the posters who said they don't follow links?

Also, can I just check? Are people outraged because they think its something to do with the SNP, or something to do with the patriarchy? Or is it both? What joy, so much to be angry about...

The job description gives no information as to what knowledge and experience the successful candidate requires, simply a cliche-ridden list of abilities : energy, enthusiasm, excellent communication and IT skills, etc etc. No mention of any medical knowledge or experience, or specific activities such as inspection visits to women's lavatories to check facilities, talking to young girls with no knowledge of menstruation, practical guidance in the use of products required? The post is dealing with people who menstruate so obviously the male sex has equal experience.

Apparently the Act deals with the provision of free sanitary products for those 'who need them;' free to all women or those in financial need, (how to be identified?). The post would require someone with great powers of persuasion, ie a salesman, because the institutions expected to make them available would also be expected to fund them.

It is the use of the term 'people who menstruate' angers me.

If you menstruate you are a woman because you have a womb.

Well, yes it is important. It shouldn't be a taboo subject.

But this doesn't mean that a man is the right person for this job.

How likely is it that he'll be able to have a clue how they feel physically and mentally? How does having been a personal trainer equip him for discussions of menopause issues.
The only chip on my shoulder is the one of sheer commonsense. This is a daft appointment yet somehow not surprising these days. Sigh.

I understand that the SG is giving some extra money to Health Boards/LAs to help them set up schemes. Publicly owned premises, eg health Centres, Sports Halls/pools, etc. will use their Council funding. Part of the job of the Officer will be persuading commercial premises and work places to routinely supply the sanitary supplies in their own toilets at their own (small in the scheme of things) expense.
