i don't know, i don't have smartphone, but i see people doing it, so i assume there must be a tie up between them. and you wouldn't want there to be a gap, and be stuck at an unmanned terminus late at night.

I use Apple Wallet on my iPhone and have both my credit card and debit card set up there. I did have to update my new credit card when I got it as it requires the long card number, expiry date and cvc number in order to work. The details are not shown on the phone though.

I prefer it now as my phone needs facial recognition to use it so no one can steal my phone and use my credit card.

Thinking about it, I don’t remember having to tell the companies I have direct debits with the new card details when my bank card expired but I assume that is because they only need bank account and sort card to set up DD. when my credit card was renewed recently I had to tell quite a number of companies where my card was registered, such as Amazon, local taxi firm, Tesco online groceries.

It might be the payment to the phone company is through a direct debit?

It’s perfectly legal. Automatic Billing Updater is run by Mastercard, and Visa Account Updater is Visa's version. Both work in very similar ways.

When your bank sends you a new card it tells Mastercard or Visa who update a database which participating merchants can use to update the details they have.

I always have to update mine manually on various websites, when mine expire.

I have always had to activate any new bank cards (credit or debit) along with updating any online shops/services that the cards were lodged on.

Never heard of a bank updating customer information to a third party.

Are you sure that the email from the phone provider is authentic and not a scam? All the cards I have received when they have expired required activating.

I found that PayPal already had my new card details when I went to update them.
