Do you wear a practical pinny about the house?

I’m quite flabbergasted by emotional and negative responses to apron wearing……the associations with old ladies etc. The “Absolutely not!”. It seems funny to be so anti the wearing of a practical garment. So many people must get eg stains and greasy marks on clothes……spending time and energy trying to remove them or just having garments spoiled. I suppose that my many years in art/pottery rooms got me into the habit of aprons or an oversize shirt over my clothes. I’ve kept some of my late dad’s shirts to wear for those things. So, I love an apron! Also vividly remember (and hated) getting marks on my pregnant tummy/clothes when it was large enough to be rubbing against the edge of a worktop. That must apply to tummies in general I suppose!

I wear an apron when I cook and bake, I am messy.
I have started making my own, butchers style, out of remnants from a curtain fabric shop. They are extra wide to go round the back. I have added large pockets and a loop to run a tea towel through like chefs have. I even put darts across the top of the bib so it doesn’t gape.
I also have a garden pinny with large pockets, though I seem to be able still to get my clothes mucky in the garden.
My mother only wore aprons occasionally but she made one every Christmas for a family friend. Much thought went into the fabric choice as the recipient always wore the new apron for “good” the next year.

I always wear a clean apron for cooking. I have made Sophie Allport one very stylish. I would never wear a tabard though.

I wear an apron when baking or batch cooking but strangely not for an everyday meal. I am meant to be making an egg collection apron for my DiL - that will be for Christmas. I have an old much loved, bit large side blouse, that I wear if I am doing jobs that really endanger my clothes (plus hair and face but they go uncovered unless I need a mask) like painting or cleaning things ready to paint.

Cross-over aprons have gained popularity in the craft world for some reason. I think they are deemed to be more "artisan" in look. They are also, strangely, called Japanese-style aprons.

I have one pinefore which is an impressionist design made out of the same sort of PVC stuff that is sold on rolls to make tablecloths. I use it very occasionally for dirty jobs (and when I have finished I wipe it down in soapy water and it’s good to go for the next time. It was a present, but otherwise I don’t ever remember buying an apron or pinefore.

I have several pretty aprons at the back of the cupboard!

I dont wear an apron but i grew up with my mum displaying one day in,day out.

I can't say I have a solid reason for not wearing 1,I just dont.

I THINK its a generation 'thing'. I have a neighbour who is in early 80s and whenever he is in the garage or garden he wears a button up overall, its strange me saying this but on seeing him it zaps me back to being a young girl and the usual attire for my mums friends was a pinny, lovely really ....

Never! My mother used to insist that I wore one when helping in the house, which made me determined never to do so when I left home (along with never again wearing a vest!)

I would want to wash the pinny if it got dirty, so I might just as well wash the clothes I wear.

Shysal you must be my sister! I haven't worn an apron or vest since childhood......or fawn socks......or anything made of Bri-nylon!

I love my pinny, only on my early 50s but i have always worn one.

I wear my mother’s apron on Christmas Day and use her oven gloves to put the turkey in the oven. They are then washed and put away until the next Christmas.

I just connect pinefores or aprons with old people I guess it s what your used to I ve never worn one since Domestic science classes at school

I always wore PVC aprons when cooking but when things get a bit messy it drips onto your jeans or shoes. I bought a navy striped one on the Sainsburys order last year expecting a rag but got a lovely thick Habitat one.
Never for doing housework they strangle you when you kneel on them.Not that I go into corners or under things like my mum did.

I’ve got two butcher style aprons. Both are in a kitchen drawer. I haven’t seen them for ages.

Yes when cooking or cleaning the oven or anything that involves bleach. I occasionally like to buy them when I’m on holiday- e.g. a funny donkey one from Crete and a Klimt’s The Kiss from Vienna. I know they’re touristy stuff, but I put them on and I’m swept back to the holiday.

A bit of a side track but it just occurred to me...

Maybe it's an entry requirement for Bake Off/Master Chef/ any other cookery programme that people can wear both an apron and long sleeves?

I always cook/clean in short sleeves, anything else just gets in the way and grubby.

A striped Butchet style apron, stir frying, sautéing for anything where fat can spit, I hate getting greasy marks on clothes, they notice and sometimes a devil to come out. Cooking only for me.

Nell I've looked them up now and yes that's what they are. I was a bit amazed that you could get adult ones - someone must have seen me drinking coffee

I once spilled a whole Costa coffee down me when the top came off the take away cup - we were 50 miles from home visiting Salisbury for the day and I smelled of caramel latte for the entire day.

teabagwoman, I too have dyspraxia, although no sight problems. I wear an apron when cooking, another one when cleaning because I do drop and splash things about.

I have a gardening apron, but that was designed and made for me by DD, for gardening reasons only. It has lots of pockets to put packets of seeds, plant tags, hand tools and bits and pieces picked out of the soil and a waterproof back so if I pick up something wet, it doesn't soak my clothes, if I have to hold it close to me.

For those who do not know what dyspraxia is, it falls into the same neuro diverse category as dyslexia or dyscalculia and means that you have problems with fine movement. The classic 'clumsy child' problem. No matter how much you try, you drop things, trip over, have poor balance, atrocious writing and cannot do anything neatly, no matter how much you want to and try.

Neuo diversity in its many manifestations runs strongly in my family. I have dyspraxia and ADHD as, does my DS and my DGS is awaiting assessment for ADHD
