Half a small lardy cake slice with a cuppa. Dh had other half.

I haven’t had a Lardy cake for decades, I didn’t know they still made them. I must seek one out.

You need to find a small West Country bakery. Bakers of Bath do large and individual slices amongst other delicious naughty but nice cakes. They also do fantastic lunch time rolls with multiple fillings to pick and choose from. If ever you are in Bath worth a visit.

I have just googled Lardy Cake, is it similar to pain aux raisin?

Witzend Wed 24-Aug-22 09:43:01

Two (delicious) jam doughnuts yesterday. I blame dh, since he bought a pack of 4 from M&S, and obviously I had to eat my two because it would have been a sin to let them go stale.

Dh’s granny used to make a lardy cake he still occasionally raves about - I’ve yet to make one, though. I’m afraid the ‘lard’ bit puts me off. I only ever buy it in order to make bird pudding in very cold weather (our birds are very appreciative).

Golden syrup dumplings with cream. Yum yum

Overnight oats with berries and a nectarine - yummie!

I make lardy cake (once in a blue moon) with Trex - seems to work OK.

I meant to say Redhead56 that my OH’s parents lived in Barrowford?

I had bran flakes and manderin oranges with a cup of tea a bit earlier this morning. Feeling a bit peckish now but will hold out till lunchtime if i can, if not it will be a yogurt.

Is a Lardy cake a type of fruit bread or is that something entirely different.?
It all reminds me of Betty’s fat rascals, delicious.

MissAdventure Wed 24-Aug-22 11:54:48

Half of a twirl.

Nannytopsy Wed 24-Aug-22 12:02:45

How to describe lardy cake? It’s baked in a tray and comes cut into squares. There are raisins, sultanas etc scattered through it. The texture is the hardest thing to describe - clearly has quite a high fat content, tends to be a bit layered, not as light as a croissant or pain au chocolat. Can anyone add to that?
Love them but haven’t had any in ages.

MissAdventure Wed 24-Aug-22 12:04:12

I've only ever read about lardy cake in story books.

Greyduster Wed 24-Aug-22 12:08:39

Two well past their SBD crumpets with strawberry jam! Please don’t tell my DD!

LadyGracie Wed 24-Aug-22 12:12:23

They used to sell lardy cakes, which I love, in our local Waitrose, DH and I would have half each, so it's probably a good idea they stopped selling them.

I wonder if G'chn coming at the weekend is enough of an excuse to make some?
