They went to the moon several times 50 yrs ago and decided it really was made of “green cheese” and didn’t bother again.
Technologically it was a great achievement, the computer on board was a fraction as powerful as a mobile phone, many spin offs from the programme that benefit us today resulted.
With enormous effort it probably would be possible to sustain a colony on the moon although we’re they are going to find enough water to do that I don’t know.
Beyond that interplanetary travel for humans is not likely this century, if at all, much more likely sending robots that do not need life support will gather pace. Its hard envisage research leading to economic exploitation because of the immense cost of transport.
