Thank you Chardy for you money saving thread. As I was responding I got to thinking of the things I really wouldn’t want to change/ economise on as the cost of living rises.

Here’s my list; I couldn’t car share with my husband, so unless things were dire my car stays.
Quality tea bags.
Hairdressing (8 weekly)
Quality loo roll.
My shower oil.
Wine and Gin ( we rarely drink during the week)
Quality Olive/Walnut oil for dressings.
Ecover fabric conditioner.

Quite a few of the above plus venison sausages and game in general

I’m not sure what I wouldn’t economise on having lived through the high mortgage rates of the ‘80s everything was up for grabs. My husband says he’ll never economise on heating/warmth.
He grew up in an old stone cottage with only one fire to heat the whole house and never wants to be that cold again.

My TV subscription.
I rarely go out. It is my saviour alot of the time.
I have had the boiler off completely, only on when I wash up every few days (only me, limited appetite at the moment).
Fruit will be staying, the fruit I like, ready to eat, not hard as nails. As I'm not really buying much else it's OK.
I'm happy with cheaper cuts of meat, I've always preferred one pot cooking so my slow cooker is ideal for this. It's a multi cook thing, so it can make soup, and steam and fry. Great gadget, less electric.
But I won't scrimp on my gc. They as a family are already having a hard time. If I can help I do.

My dog and mobile phone, wouldn't want to be without either but mostly the dog and her welfare.

I will never buy battery eggs or chicken- I’d rather go without.

No 7 brown black mascara and their med foundation in cool beige plus contact lenses -also my garden birds ? treats that cost me £5 a week and they are so worth it and sing to me from the tops of nearby trees when they see me going up and down the garden with the yellow jug filled with their meal shaken with red hot chilli ? powder to stop Squirrel Nutkin eating all of it . The birds food would be the last to go .

I would not economise on:
- coffee or tea
- shoes (my feet are wide so I need wide shoes otherwise I get corns)
- in general - good food ingredients. I figure that if you eat well, it saves in doctor's bills later on. Having said that good fruit (in season)
- Fresh eggs and vegetables (food again)
- Fast internet / broadband
- Good technology gadgets (phone/ipad/laptop/computer)
- Nice clothes (spent a good part of my life making clothes when it was the norm) but now I just want to buy them
I guess that I have worked for over 40 years and now retired. If I want to buy something, I will.

I've cut down on cleaning products.
Still buying Fairy Platinum dishwasher tablets.
Still going to hairdresser every 4 weeks.

Pollydolly I have psoriasis and use Sainsbury pure soap.
Might be worth checking the ingredients. It's very cheap.

My dog - her insurance, vet care, food or welfare in any way.

With me its cats - two at a time. They current pair are small kittens so they haven't learned to write and read yet.

Have to add some kind of special meal on Christmas Eve -and a Christmas tree, although as far as what is served and how much the meal and tree cost, I cut my coat to suit my cloth.

I won’t give up Dom Perignon champoo, good quality blines, smoked salmon, caviar, cream cheese but may cut down to perhaps six days a week and have beans on toast with a milk stout on Fridays.

Tree71 Tue 27-Sept-22 11:28:13

I feel lucky that I’m one of the ones that can afford to say there are things I won’t economise on, but fully appreciate that others don’t have that luxury.
I feel desperately sad that people are having to choose between heating and eating. What an awful state of affairs the country is in.

NaughtyNantheRed Tue 27-Sept-22 11:27:45

Tanqueray gin and Fever tree tonic....I only have one or 2 small ones every other evening but can't do with other brands they don't taste good. Decent kitchen roll & loo rolls. Good quality tea bags. I'd sooner have less & have something I really like/enjoy than something cheaper which is usually a false economy

Bignanny2 Tue 27-Sept-22 11:16:50

I’d never economise on skin care and house cleaning products including washing powder. I’ve tried cheaper versions and had to return to the trusted brands despite the price. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Heating, warm daytime cool at night.
A comfortable bed
Tea
Nice Wine

I can't think of anything that I wouldn't economise on if push comes to shove, as they say.

It's even hard to think which of my few 'luxuries' would be last to go. I'm not talking big things, as I am careful anyway (one of us has to be!) but would I prioritise that weekly packet of supermarket own-brand shortbread fingers over the weekly crisps? I don't know.

My OH, on the other hand, would have a list as long as his arm of the things that he's not prepared to economise on or give up. A very expensive list. And his list would not include things like car maintenance!
I forsee some very heated discussions arising here shortly, when the cost of living crisis really starts to bite.

I think similar thought to you.

Georgesgran Sun 25-Sept-22 19:00:33

Gin! Only joking - I shall have to try cheaper gin. That’s an economy, isn’t it?
