I don’t read the articles but see the headlines, the poor couple must be seriously damaged by the constant attention and criticism they are receiving.

I’m not a fan but enough is enough surely!

Surely the best way to use her husband's family would be to pose prettily, toe the line, conform to the usual ways of the family?
What motivates her to move away from doing that?

Well, she did that at first and we were all charmed.

But no, I wouldn't expect her to conform to a stereotype or even for them to stay here and perform any Royal duties if they both wanted out. Two less to fund, more slimming down can't be a bad thing although I think they could have been great ambassadors for Britain overseas had they remained in the firm.

However, all the sly digs, the innuendo all the time in public is just tawdry. And it's boring now.

This thread still going! Amazing. Obviously a lot of interest from us all.

Perhaps Meghan likes to have the last word, but then so do we ?

Callistemon21 Fri 02-Sept-22 13:42:00

Well it is good to have an American perspective here
I agree

And I hope we can disagree without acrimony and personal insults.

I agree with your last post Glorianny. Women have been told to be quiet and dignified for sooooooo long now, we are allowed to be loud and brash and whatever bloody else, even if people don't like us for doing so. Misogyny is alive and well

Does that mean you can trash other women and their reputations in the process.
Is that misogyny or does it have another word?

Something I read on GN - what happened to the Sisterhood?

Glorianny - I made no comments about Meghan and surnames. I was just elaborating on the choices we have regarding the names we use.

Sorry if I have muddied waters somehow.

I assume she does use her own name, many her age do, brilliant solution.

I think it would be lovely if she didn't stretch the truth.

Regardless I can't fault them for earning a living and supporting themselves, less for the taxpayers or PC to provide.

Does that include bullying other women and reducing them to tears? Meghan has history regarding that particular trait and it goes way back before she became a Duchess. Attempting to deflect by stating she’s some kind of trailblazer because she’s ‘black’ is nonsense.

She uses people to get what she wants then drops them. The female writer that did the interview for The Cut magazine didn’t exactly write a sympathetic article. I think she saw through madam Sussex.

imaround - I'm another one who welcomes an American perspective - so thank you.

I think part of the problem is that on the whole (massive generalisation) there is a different view of wealth and "status" in America - wealth is not dirty word there and status is "achieved" rather than an accident of birth. Striving for wealth and a "lifestyle" is certainly more commended than it would be in the UK where we are more likely to say someone is "above themself".

I also remember from my time there and subsequent visits that the media doesn't bite the hand that feeds it quite the same as ours do and that "ordinary" people in America are less suspicious of successful people.

Meghan no doubt feels she is a successful woman and as others think she is too, this gives ger a voice. I expect people are interested in what she has to say abd therefore will listen.

Over here we have problems simply with her notion of her own importance. Other than birth royalty, here I think we maybe expect people to acquire sucess slowly by persistently doing the right thing.

I'm not sure if this is even 100% relevant to this debate but I think the British public on the whole were originally pleased to see Meghan and thought she was the breath of fresh air. What she should have done was just sit it out for a while as Michelle Obama apparently suggested and then little by little she would have crept into people's hearts and we wouldn't be having these discussions here.

Just my thoughts.
And apologies for the liberal smattering of inverted commas I've just noticed.

Nice post.

Americans do seem to believe earned wealth to be acceptable.

People are commended for legally making a living, paying their mortgage, as compared to living in luxury by accident of birth.

Money doesn't equate to being "above themselves".

Just don't tell false tales, all will be well.

I am just passing through before my long weekend, but wanted to respond to a fee posts.

Calliste: I, too, hope that we can all disagree with acrimony and personal insults. Luckily, I have managed to do so on this thread without much effort because I do not like acrimony and personal insults. Sadly, that was not the case from another poster to me last night.

Notspaghetti thank you for your thoutful post. I think you touched on a few points that are important regarding the differences between British and Americans.

Glorianny: I apologize for misinterpreting your post! As you can see, it can be dangerous to be an American around here sometimes, though my reaction even surprised me!

Lucca Fri 02-Sept-22 15:51:48

Just came back to this and genuinely horrified nobody else seems at all
Bothered by Heath comment this morning which was rude personal and xenophobic regardless of your opinion of Meghan. I’m very disillusioned

heath480 Fri 02-Sept-22 16:04:59

Couldn’t careless Lucca that you are horrified,I find that hilarious,a comment from a stranger bothers you that much.Perhaps you need more in your life.Disillusioned, don’t be so dramatic.

I am actually not posting on this thread again,it is boring me.

In fact I will stay on MN,they got it exactly right when they described GN earlier in the week.

JaneJudge Fri 02-Sept-22 16:05:50

Could you post some evidence of this tickingbird or is it like much of what is written about Meghan pure he said/she said unsubstantiated gossip. I seem to remember her being accused of reducing Kate to tears and then Meghan saying she was made to cry.
Of course women who have some success are always castigated by people (particularly other women) they met and did better than.

FannyCornforth Fri 02-Sept-22 16:06:21

?

Lucca Fri 02-Sept-22 16:06:42

Oh the old you need more in your life comment. If you knew…

FannyCornforth Fri 02-Sept-22 16:11:51

Sorry.
I thought that I was being so clever with my emoji placement.
That was to heath, sorry, whatever
Anyway, I’ve had an extremely challenging day
I’m just waiting for my moussaka to heat up, and I’ll be away

Smileless2012 Fri 02-Sept-22 16:12:30

That wouldn't apply to Kate though would it. Where has Meghan done better than Kate?

JaneJudge Fri 02-Sept-22 16:14:14

in her acting career?

FannyCornforth Fri 02-Sept-22 16:18:41

Kate studied Art History, just like me

MawtheMerrier Fri 02-Sept-22 16:20:58

Kate met her future husband at St Andrew’s- also just like me. (Only we thought of it first!)

Smileless2012 Fri 02-Sept-22 16:21:48

But Kate isn't an actress.

Norah Fri 02-Sept-22 16:23:02

Living her own life, providing for herself, career.

Not middle class, no career, just marrying for money.

All a guess, naturally.

It isn’t unsubstantiated though. It’s well documented. However, you seem to set great store by Meghan’s version of events even though she’s a proven liar. Most odd.

You haven't provided any details, names or links tickingbird i is therefore unsubstantiated gossip.
If by well documented you mean there us a lot in the media well strangely enough everything in the media isn't true!

Yes, it was shocking and if that is typical of a visitor from Mumsnet I realise why I steer clear.

tickingbird Fri 02-Sept-22 18:27:43

Glorianny It’s out there so take the time to look. She has consistently lied. Only the other day she claimed a South African actor from The Lion King told her the people took to the streets in celebration when she married Harry in the same way they did when Nelson Mandela was finally released after decades of imprisonment. Now that is definitely unsubstantiated!
