Hoovering the Back of the Fridge-Freezer ?

Unrelated to this thread but I’ve just remembered my mums party trick! She had dementia but when still safe to live alone, she decided that she needed to disconnect all appliances when she went to bed! Then the next day, she forgot that she had done this and thought most things were broken - nightmare phone calls ensued!

The fridge freezer was one appliance she wanted to disconnect but the wall socket was behind it. Mum, age 87, becoming fragile, somehow managed to slide it out and unplug it then push it back in! When I went round one day to see what was going on, I could barely move it an inch!

Once we worked out what was happening we solved the problem by installing safety boxes/plates over all sockets in the house which mum could not remove. For some reason she was able to the forget about the need to switch off appliances when she could not see the sockets. Apparently simply taping a piece of paper the same colour as the wall over the socket would have worked as well.

I still smile at the thought of mum manhandling her full height fridge freezer around the kitchen!

We had a fridge/freezer which broke after only 2 or 3 years so needed replacing as it wasnt freezing properly, something to do with being in an outhouse/garage I think. Really annoying.
My mums fridge lasted fir nearly 40 years.
As for hoovering behind? No.

Minus 18C is the correct temperature for normal use, turn it up to minus 24C, I think, if you're freezing more than a couple of fresh things.
We've got fridge and freezer thermometers.

Fortunately I clocked that there was a problem before anything awful happened.
It appeared that things were freezing, but they were ‘frozen’ because everything was packed in.
It was only when I tried to freeze some ice cubes that I realised that it wasn’t right.
I had to bin a load of stuff.
Which included some fish pies, which could potentially have been an absolute disaster if we had eaten them.
I honestly dread to think.
It was very lucky really.

I've done mine once in a blue moon but with a soft brush rather than a vacuum cleaner.

FannyCornforth it sounds as if your freezer could be losing gas or have a problem with the compressor. Is it under extended warranty?

We had a very troublesome freezer which fortunately had a 5 year warranty from JL but it took a lot of protracted negotiations, several repairs before we could get a replacement. It started going wrong after a few months and was a good make too.

I would go back to the supplier as this doesn’t sound fit for purpose. A freezer should last much longer than 4 years

Good point, had started to think it would not last as long.

Mine’s intergrated, no doubt there is dust there but I can’t get to it. Another thing to worry about.
I had vacuumed everywhere before going away for three weeks only to come back and see a ball of fluff on the parquet. I mean how did it get there?

An integrated unit would not have as much accumulated dust though.

Not sure it is possible with an integrated fridge freezer.

I can just about squeeze a feather duster behind mine....yuk!

Bought my first freezer in 1973. Since then I have owned a succession of freezers and never cleaned the back of any of them even once.

Even when they are moved for replacement every 15 years or so, the back neer looks particulalry dusty or dirty.

Despite this recommendation, I intend to continue not to clean them.

Never done it and they’ve always been fine in 40 years or so, ours is integrated anyway so no chance.

I probably could but it is tall with every cleaning liquid known to man taking pride of place on the top.
