Steak has gone up!

Picked up Sirloin steaks the other day and they were £9 each! and they were from one of the cheaper supermarkets.
Rather than give up steak altogether we've started having half each, with maybe a fried egg, mushrooms, toms and steak cut chips. Kind of make it like a mixed grill to stretch it.
Anybody else started doing similar?

I'm not a lover of steak and only eat about half of it usually. The other half is usually given to DGS which is plenty for a child. My 2 dogs have it if he's not visiting. They are a bit spoilt.

The best steak I have ever bought is at ALDI it’s only around five pounds for a top of the range fillet, a little cheaper for a sirloin.
I have bought steak everywhere over the years and always stick to aldi even the most expensive supermarkets can’t beat it in my opinion

Agreed. We have steak about once a month, we have tried different shops and now only buy Aldi’s Aberdeen Angus aged steak, a generous sirloin or ribeye steak is currently £4.75

My former farmer husband has steak two or three times a week Yesterday I bought the Asda budget steak my steak expert pronounced it good before I told him the price and excellent after It cost £2 !

JaneJudge Thu 01-Sept-22 19:10:31

Of course it is your choice smile
The thread was about the price of meat though rather than ethical choice (and having choice wrt food is a luxury)
I buy meat very ethically but I don't pretend other people have that luxury (or want to) don't take my posts personal as they are not intended in that vain

I would rather not eat chicken than buy chicken from Thailand. I would rather eat vegetarian food than support the animal cruelty practised in many countries. Call that a life choice if you like. The chicken's life as opposed to mine.

JaneJudge Thu 01-Sept-22 18:19:20

it says on the back of the packet. Lots of frozen chicken comes from Thailand
I was just offering suggestions not life choices or goals. The place I work at cannot operate because of stuff stuck in Europe so I am a bit bewildered by our country atm, let alone steak

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 18:15:17

But where does it come from?

JaneJudge Thu 01-Sept-22 18:02:35

frozen meat is cheaper btw

I remember, not so long ago, when cuts like neck of lamb was a cheap 'stew' meat. It seems to be on parr with the rest of the lamb now. Infact steak, along with chicken, is a once a month treat. I'm living on stews and soups, made in the slow cooker, from veggies, lentils with veggie sausages. Another occasional treat is fish fingers (no longer cod) with spuds and peas, or on bread as a sani.

Yes, breast of lamb used to be cheap too. Even in our poorest times, we could run to that. I remember paying 27p for one at the butchers in the early '80s, which was dirt cheap even then, but these days it's usually rolled up around some stuffing and sold at a crazy price. It's a pity, because I absolutely loved it cooked in the oven with potatoes until both were crispy. The same goes for belly pork.
Last time I looked, liver was still cheap, but that might have changed by now too! Mind you, I don't really like it, and can only eat it in small doses. Typical!

Tea here tonight is a stir fry. Mainly veg, and some of them from my garden, but I'm pushing the boat out and have sliced up a small chicken breast to go in it too. I've prepped it, and the smell of garlic is making my mouth water already. ☺

And whether DH likes it or not, I confidently expect to serve bashed neeps (mashed turnips) quite frequently during the autumn

You took the words right out of my mouth as the song goes!
I just asked DH if he can peel and chop up a swede which is lingering in the fridge!
He likes haggis, I don't.

No sago, thank you (school puddings)

JaneJudge Thu 01-Sept-22 17:43:41

it is £27 upwards for steak in a pub round here
£9 for two steaks from M&S

grandtanteJE65 Thu 01-Sept-22 17:37:57

We have not eaten any steak for years. It has literally been far too expensive here for the last 20 years or so.

I am expert at stretching minced pork or chicken and have dug out all the wartime recipies from both world wars I had lying about.

We have plenty of apples in the garden, so I am eating stewed apples for breakfast at present.

Potatoes, lentils, cabbage, leeks are still affordable, and most Indian cookery books can provide cheap recipes. And whether DH likes it or not, I confidently expect to serve bashed neeps (mashed turnips) quite frequently during the autumn.

Anyone for sago pudding?

Not with steak - a very rare treat here - but I've just decided that our weekly salmon fillets are getting rather expensive. There's no way I could possible persuade OH to only have half of one (I can imagine his response if I were to suggest it, and it would not be repeatable here), but I decided yesterday that I will halve my own portion from now on. Every little helps.

Sounds like OH. Still living in dark ages?! Does he make you do everything for him with little in return? Does he think sharing has 4letters? ! Well! Trade him in for the new model! Understands need to get creative with din-dins and even helps keep house in order too, you just test drive one- it's the future?

What, the newer model is both more efficient and more economical? Where can I get one? grin

Cycorax Thu 01-Sept-22 17:27:08

There are cuts of steak that are much less expensive than sirloin or rump. Ask any good butcher for a recommendation. For example, ribeye is very tasty as it has more fat in it. There are plenty of others that you won't see in supermarkets.

For me chicken has to be free range - it's that or nothing. Same with eggs. I hate the thought of 'factory farming' That goes for all meat. Luckily I don't have a big appetite!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 15:05:44

That’s not what I mean at all Gabrielle. A supermarket will know roughly (in terms of country of origin) where the meat it sells has come from but how many consumers read and understand the labels if it’s pre-packed? The meat may not be dodgy in health terms, but can be decidedly dodgy in terms of welfare. I like to know that the meat I buy has been reared using good welfare standards. My butcher uses the same method as kitty’s. Are you happy to buy, for instance, non-free range chicken which is much cheaper or do you insist on free range or else go without? Sadly, the Red Tractor symbol has been shown to be unreliable.

aonk Thu 01-Sept-22 15:02:35

I recommend bavette or flank steak which I buy from m and s for about £6 for 2. We eat a fair amount of meat but I don’t stress too much about where it’s from.

kittylester Thu 01-Sept-22 14:11:53

My butcher goes to the farm and selects the beasts he wants. That's knowing the provenance.

Gabrielle56 Thu 01-Sept-22 14:04:10

Germanshepherdsmum

I would rather not eat meat than buy from anywhere but my local butcher, who knows the provenance of all his meat (and of course will cut just the size you want); it’s all from animals bred and slaughtered locally. If in doubt when eating out I choose the vegetarian option. I refuse to support factory farming in this country or abroad.

All retailers know meat provenance it's the law, don't make out that cheaper shops sell dodgy or uncertified meat, it's untrue and churlish!

We have been halving most meat for over a year. Not so much for the cost bit found a single piece each was far too much. Even halved a chicken keiv tonight.

We have too.

I don't seem to lose any weight though!

I find that it is the carbs that damage my weight so cutting down on meat would probably mean eating more carbs to fill up and therefore putting on weight! Low carb diet always was quite expensive as the filling stuff is the carbs!

Amalegra Thu 01-Sept-22 12:30:42

As I get older I find I fancy eating meat less and less. I would not call myself a vegetarian as I like to be ‘open to all offers’ but my taste for meat has definitely waned- in fact that applies to food in general! Perhaps my body is telling me I don’t need to eat so much as I get older? Either way, at least I won’t have to pay the extra costs of meat at the moment!

I 2nd Aldi steak when it is on offer. Otherwise I buy the yellow ticketed reduced steak where ever I see it and put it in the freezer. I may pick up one steak one week and another another week until I have a matching pair. As others have said large steaks can be cut in half. My DH likes his steak rare and I like mine well done so it has to be cut in half before cooking.
