Steak has gone up!

Picked up Sirloin steaks the other day and they were £9 each! and they were from one of the cheaper supermarkets.
Rather than give up steak altogether we've started having half each, with maybe a fried egg, mushrooms, toms and steak cut chips. Kind of make it like a mixed grill to stretch it.
Anybody else started doing similar?

I’ve been cutting down on red meat for a while so rarely buy steak now using quorn in mince dishes, I do like a good beef stew in Winter though.

Not with steak - a very rare treat here - but I've just decided that our weekly salmon fillets are getting rather expensive. There's no way I could possible persuade OH to only have half of one (I can imagine his response if I were to suggest it, and it would not be repeatable here), but I decided yesterday that I will halve my own portion from now on. Every little helps.

I've been batch cooking chillis/spagbol sauce using half the amount of mince and upping the bean/veg content. It's made me more creative with ingredients and I prefer it being less about the meat.

I also have less meal and more side salad with almost everything as I grow my own so that bit's free.

We have been halving most meat for over a year. Not so much for the cost bit found a single piece each was far too much. Even halved a chicken keiv tonight.

We have steak every Friday and I have noticed the leap in price.

I gave also thought that my salmon fillets have got very thin.

Just as for energy, I am so angry about the reasons that have caused this rise. And yet, perhaps the positive side, that we all have to learn to respect energy, and expensive foodstuffs, red meat in particular, much better.

Just making a big batch of Bolo. with half a pound of mince, and peppers, courgettes, mushrooms and a big tin of lentils, which will give me at least 12 portions (would normally add carrots, but I haven't got any - and with the price of petrol, learning to respect its use too and avoid short trips for 1 item or two, as I used to without thinking).

We are vegetarian but still noticing a big rise in grocery bills

We always buy one good 21 day aged rib eye steak and share it, with fried onions, peppercorn sauce and a baked potato with a knob of butter. Plenty!

Hmm. Maybe I need to quarter it now?
A bit like ‘a finger of fudge’ which is ‘just enough’. ?

I have a steak just once a year, as a treat. I tend to eat chicken but even that is going up in price now.

Witzend Tue 30-Aug-22 09:54:25

I hardly ever buy steak anyway, but am not surprised that it’s gone up.
Last time I bought any, I used the self checkout and neglected to take my receipt.
Hadn’t realised that there was a small security tag on the back of the pack, and there was no alert at the checkout - so I was stopped at the exit and had to stand there, a suspected thief, flanked by security guards, while they went through the bin to find my receipt. Which thank goodness they did.

Anyone else buying steak, please be warned!

Much better for the digestive system too?

That's what we've been doing.
After I cook it, I cut it in half lengthwise, so that were both getting the Best Sidesmile

We have too.

I don't seem to lose any weight though!

Jeepers Urmstongran you've made me hungry now and I've only just had my breakfast!!

I stretch any mince-based dish with red lentils, too, and sometimes quite a lot of finely chopped root veg, too. Particularly good for e.g. shepherd’s pie and what we call School Dinner Mince (my version), which dh really enjoys -(he’s very easily pleased on the food front, for which I’m forever grateful.)

teabagwoman Tue 30-Aug-22 10:06:20

Rarely eat steak and salmon has become a treat. For those, like me, who don’t tolerate beans well, oats are useful for stretching mince.

My DH tends to order our meat from a local butcher who does delivery. I did just check steak appears to have gone up two 8oz sirloins £12.50 I am not keen on red meat the older I get the less I like it. We get minced beef from Tesco which hasn’t gone up I tend to order the best when on offer.
Fish we get from the local fish stall on a Friday

How awful. Don’t like the habit of some stores asking you if you want a receipt. A security tag was left on an item from Primark so at the door I stop as a noise went off. The security guard politely escorted me back to the counter and asked for the receipt. Luckily I could find it among other things in my bag. It looked even worse as I wasn’t given a bag. Also it pays to examine your receipt for groceries as often a mistake has been made and something on offer hasn’t been shown.

I have a steak about once a month as its proably not that good to have chunks of red meat - DH doesnt like so has fish. I do not understand why pubs charge upwards of £23 for a steak.

M& S Lasagne and Fish Pie for 2 has gone up to £10 that's a £2 rise- shan't but either of them I can and do easily make them but I usually have a couple in the freezer if we are late home and knackered.

HurdyGurdy Tue 30-Aug-22 10:36:34

I go to Costco every other payday, and buy a four pack of very thick sirloin steaks for around £40-45. I thought that was very expensive, but having read the OP, maybe it's actually not so outrageous.

I also buy a pack of their salmon fillets, which are massive, and one fillet could probably serve two, but not in this house!

I get a tray of their chicken thigh fillets and pork leg steaks.

All that lasts us two months, with 5% fat mince from Tesco or Aldi being the only other meat purchased.

It is getting expensive, but we are in the very fortunate position of being able to still afford it.

grumppa Tue 30-Aug-22 12:00:22

Are you talking gastropubs, BigBertha1? My two locals serving pub grub (suburban London) charge £12-14 for rump, depending on size, and £16-17 for rib-eye or sirloin.

Callistemon21 Tue 30-Aug-22 12:06:29

£25 recently in the South West for steak with very few trimmings and £22.50 at a pub recently in Wiltshire (we had something cheaper).

snowberryZ Tue 30-Aug-22 12:35:20

I never order steak when out.
I can cook it better myself.
Also a lot of restaurants give you peas and a tomotats. Almost as if they go for the cheapest veg they can find.
I like to have good quality red meat at least twice a month as it boosts iron levels. A doc told me a lot of older people are aneimic and don't realise it.
I dont believe that red meat, in moderation, is bad for us.

Elusivebutterfly Tue 30-Aug-22 12:44:00

I've just checked on Sainsburys website - that's my local shop though it's not generally a cheap shop. A 225g sirloin steak is £4.75 and a 225g rump steak is £3.75.
The men in my family would eat a whole one but half is really quite enough so it's not too bad at under £2 per portion.
