The rate of inflation at the moment is 10.1% I believe so how come I’ve just been to Tesco to buy sardines for my cat and they have gone from 40p to 50p that is a 25% increase and it’s not just on that it’s on several things how do they get away with these ENORMOUS price hikes? have the supermarkets not got to stick to the rate of inflation?

Evetything has already gone or will go up in price due to the cost of raw materials, energy, wages, just everything going up before the customer even sees the goods. Have family member runs a small interior furnishing shop. Customers asking for discounts just not realising all her costs have rocketed even more than what we here about. Considering giving up as almost giving goods away. Also someone in engineering company. Real threat will close due to energy costs. If Gov. doesn't give help there are going to be massive redundancies throughout all kinds of businesses.

Dont forget that supermarkets (in common with other businesses) have seen an insane hike in fuel prices. Unlike domestic users they are not subject to the price cap. They have to heat and light the place (including their warehouses and packing depots) and run all those freezers as well. They also have expenses relating to home delivery service and have to factor in the rising price of petrol.

I will save my sympathy for those people who are going to go cold and hungry this winter rather than
the supermarket Giants

It’s not that simple Shinamae. They’re huge companies with shareholders and other investors and their results are scrutinised by the City. The local Co-Op has more leeway in this respect.

Best thing with toilet rolls is buy them in bulk from Groupon or Amazon. Sane with wipes, bleach and kitchen rolls.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 13:12:00

That was to Shinamae at 12.51. As to your post at 13.05, biglouis has tried to explain the additional costs which are being passed on. Nobody is asking you to sympathise with the supermarkets, just to understand why the cost of your shopping is going up.

I understand why it has to go up but not to such an extreme..

well! I have just come back from putting petrol in my little car.
it used to be around £20 (half filll) today it was £30.

now energy, can anyone explain in simple language what if anything can be done, or why or what for!!!! how the companies , suppliers to the industry? are making tremendous profits? sorry, know what I mean? the Government surely can do something?

and Water ... don`t start me on that.. if are to be stuck with MsTruss, I do hope at the top of her list is nationalising WATER and energy... I live in hope!
never voted Labour in my life, but I am thinking , come on GE

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 13:27:29

Shinamae. Just look at how much the fuel you put in your car has gone up. Just imagine not having a price cap on your energy. Just imagine your employees wanting pay rises. Just imagine the cost of trying to source foodstuffs such as wheat and vegetable oil from another country due to the war in Ukraine. Just imagine the additional cost of importing from the EU caused by Brexit, Just imagine the effects of interest rate rises on any company reliant on external finance. On top of the usual outgoings which always go up, never down. This is why costs have increased ‘to such an extreme’.

And then people complain when small local shops close… And Amazon are one of the worst employers ever, anywhere. To be avoided like the plague.

Oh, the sympathy for the supermarket giants! Believe me, none of their senior management team or major shareholders will be suffering like the ordinary customers are. And I know from personal experience that they are screwing their suppliers to the hilt - many of whom are about to go out of business cos Tesco won't budge. One person I know supplies a service to them and had her long-term contract cancelled several months ago but they are still using the service that she provided. I dare say other supermarkets are trying the same tactic.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 13:31:24

They have always screwed their suppliers, it’s nothing new.

The price of milk has increased so much here, especially the 1 pint packs, that I've stopped buying semi-skimmed. I now but full fat milk and dilute it. That way, I pay half the (new) price of semi-skimmed and have half the fat of full cream milk.

Gabrielle56 Thu 01-Sept-22 13:51:39

You're literally on the money!! Same here, Warburton bread pre Ukraine? 95p-£1. Post Ukraine? £1.30-£1.50!!! Don't tell me that costs immediately shot up by a whopping 50-60%? Disgraceful profiteering on staples of diet , bread milk spuds cereals etc and always dear - LAMB!!! why? Every fence you look over in UK has a field full of.....Sheep! No transport from afar/rarity/ difficult to breed so why the mahoosively huge price/kg ALWAYS charged on home grown meat? Even NZ lamb is cheaper!!!
(Greed anyone?...)

Always interested why those who draw a wage for a living don't identify as 'working class ' or those who never vote labour no matter how much Tories utterly destroy and desolate the countries very existence, selling off all assets to fund buddies' tax cuts any explanation that will actually make common sense?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 13:58:08

A lot of those lambs (as with the dairy cows) are having to be given winter feed now because of the drought. And we pay for higher animal welfare standards in the UK. Yes, more is having to be paid for grain imported from other countries. And the potato harvest hasn’t been good due to the dry weather. Blame Putin and climate change.

Nannashirlz. I think you can get the Jakemans Honey and Lemon lozenges in Boots and Superdrug for 65p.

One of the reasons that milk prices have gone up is that cows have had to be fed on their winter feed because the hot, dry weather dried up the grass. And of course energy is used, and fuel to transport…

Milk and dairy products starting going up steeply in price before the summer.

growstuff Thu 01-Sept-22 14:20:27

There were a number of forecasts of rising milk prices at the beginning of the year, eg. www.nationalworld.com/lifestyle/food-and-drink/milk-price-increase-2022-why-prices-uk-supermarkets-cost-of-living-crisis-3650162

I have two cats. Can't say I have noticed prices of cat food going up. I have started buying the same thing in a tin rather than sachet now as that works out much cheaper. My very fussy cats eat it so I know it isn't different.

You into business to make money No other reason. The price you set for whatever product you sell to make that money is what the market will stand. Then you either do well or go bust. The consumer is always in charge of the cash flow. Too expensive don't buy iy
