Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 18:47:55

He'll certainly make more money! A lot of people think the PM's salary is huge. It really, really isn't. Worked out on an hourly basis it would be well below minimum wage despite the provision of living accommodation and other expenses.

Bless her little cotton socks, she is obviously really proud to have been chosen as PM, but I fear she is going to be a lamb to the slaughter.

There's a bit of that feeling across the Channel from what I am picking up. The everyday French seem to regard Liz Truss as energetic, enthusiastic and hard working, from what little they have seen. I think that is because she has cropped up in many roles in Europe in the past, especially round the Cameron time.
I'm not sure they see her as strong though and there are several criticisms of her already creating a mésentente cordiale.
I hope she won't fall at the first hurdle.

i think rishi had a lucky escape

If rules were followed to the letter in both cases, we can't complain, can we, even if we don't like the outcome?

No, I don't consider that he was wrong. It was a stitch-up, a pre-arranged deal, and I say that being a Labour voter at the time. But, he would have complained, wouldn't he? What's Opposition about if not to complain?

And there we agree - there should have been a GE in my opinion (although how you stitch up a secret ballot...).

The difference is that I also think there should be a GE this time. Rules were followed to the letter in both cases.

My big fear ( and I’ve heard nothing that she’s ever said that reassures me) is that she’s going to strip away workers rights. She thinks that British workers are lazy and if she makes them work harder it will improve productivity.

No, Petera, Cameron was not wrong to object to the lack of the usual process for electing a new party leader. Who knows if Brown (for whom I have a lot of admiration) would have won? It was a bit of a stitch up though, and I can't begin to imagine what would have been said if BJ had elected his own successor.

I'm not a member of any political party but I guess that if one wants to have a say in who the next leader of any party is one has to join and pay up.

The usual process was followed. Two people put themselves forward and one failed to achieve enough nominations and didn't make the ballot. In just the same way as all the candidates in the current election apart from Truss and Sunak eventually did.

Cameron did not complain about the process, he complained that Brown - once elected according to the usual processes - did not call a general election.

So once again was Cameron wrong?

BlueBelle Tue 06-Sept-22 18:09:33

A woman of her word indeed ???
Brought up left wing grew into Lib Dem now a Tory
Was a fervent Anti Brexit now a Brexit hoorayer

No confusion as to what she stands for !!!!!

Harris27 Tue 06-Sept-22 18:03:15

I wouldn’t like to be her.

I don’t remember so many complaints when the Conservative party members voted to remove Boris.

I expect that is because it didn't happen, Nanny27

ruthiek Tue 06-Sept-22 17:58:21

5553N she had an affair 16 years ago , have you never made a mistake , I don’t care if she had an affair if she can sort this country out!

chatterbox2 Tue 06-Sept-22 17:56:07

Well said Beckett

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 17:55:59

Criticising Angela Raynor is sacrilege here ruthie.

Fleurpepper Tue 06-Sept-22 17:53:55

hear hear

Luckygirl3 Tue 06-Sept-22 17:52:55

Here is the way to do it .... Proportional Representation, so we can have a true democracy.... and get more balanced policies.

ruthiek Tue 06-Sept-22 17:39:31

This forum is so left wing !Do you think foul mouthed Rayner would do any better or keir starmer ? The world is in a mess . I am not a conservative by any means but I haven't heard anyone who has come up with a really good idea how to get out of the position we are in

Linda65 Tue 06-Sept-22 17:39:07

Mmmm her speech left me thinking that these were exactly the same priorities identified by previous PMs. Wonder what they have been doing over the last 12 years. Also just heard that the help for energy bills
might result in us paying ‘moderately’ higher bills over up to 20 years!!! Seriously worried!!

I bet you wouldn’t object if Labour were in power and their new leader was being chosen in the customary way.

Oh yes, I would- especially if it is the 3rd time in a row! I am a Lib Dem btw, but would happily vote Labour tactically to get rid of Cons.

That should never be allowed to happen, twice and then straight on to GE.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 06-Sept-22 16:47:39

All those opposed to the new PM are you willing her to fail?

You do realise that if she does, it will cause more damage to the U.K.

I am all for giving her a chance, listening to what the plans are regarding energy, cost of living etc., and then make up my mind.

Zetacatty Tue 06-Sept-22 16:42:51

Well, as she grew up in a Labour household then became Lib Dem in her uni days I’m really hoping she’ll have a balanced outlook…….but I don’t think that will happen.

Alioop Tue 06-Sept-22 16:42:23

Whoever got the job will probably make another Horlicks of it and take a huge wage while others freeze this winter. I'm sick and tired of it all.

Petera Tue 06-Sept-22 16:42:08

There was no election process when Brown took over - totally different.

Sorry are you arguing that the 80000 conservative voters legitimise it?

And again - if you are - was Cameron therefore wrong?
