Let's give the girl a chance - it's in everyone's interest that she does well and 'delivers'.
Desperately sad story of the assisted suicide of a grieving mother
Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

Reading up the comments I'm starting to like Lizzy. Totally agree we should legalise cannabis as America, Netherlands and other countries have. Its regulated there so you know what's in it and under government control. I don't smoke it but can't see why others shouldn't. Alcohol kills so many people each year but we don't ban that, or tobacco.
Also I think abolishing the monarchy is a great idea and I'm in favour of a republic. We could keep the parades for the tourists without paying a fortune for the Queen and all her hangers on. People living on the streets and her with all those palaces full of empty rooms. Just a president with one residence would suit me.
Except for cannabis, if legalised would not be under the govt's control. I've no doubt that the job of manufacturing and selling would go to a crony or two, or quite possibly an American company.
But the election process is a system where we vote for a party not for a leader. That is down to the party members. It has always been this way. I don’t remember so many complaints when the Conservative party members voted to remove Boris.
There was no election process when Brown took over - totally different.

I bet you wouldn’t object if Labour were in power and their new leader was being chosen in the customary way.
I would indeed - it is an iniquitous undemocratic system whichever party is involved.

It was to Fleurpepper.
But was Cameron wrong?
It was to Fleurpepper.

I'm unsure if that’s just a general comment GSM or directed to anyone, but I did object, and wrote to my Labour MP (for whom I voted) when Brown did not have an election.
More importantly David Cameron also objected – does he now think he was wrong to do so?
Meantime..in Scotland the FM has announced the Scottish child payment of £25 a week will be paid for all 16 year old and under from November the 14th,
Thats what a government who cares about the people does .With the free travel for all under 22's and mitigating Tory policies like the bedroom tax, more free hours of childcare etc.Life might ,just might not be as hard as our neighbours down south have it .
Why DO you vote tory?
I bet you wouldn’t object if Labour were in power and their new leader was being chosen in the customary way.
how!

“Democracy in action”
this is so odd to me, it is how the leader of any Party is chosen.
should we turn it into a Eurovision Song Contest?
surely GN members who are all older people do realise that it is the method used by all political parties in the UK?
I have absolutely no issue with hoe the leader of the Party is chosen. Fair enough. But as they happen to also automatically become the Prime Minister in charge of the country, with a vote of about .17% of the population, yes, I do object- massively.
I would be more impressed if she would impose a windfall tax on the energy companies in order to reduce the debt to future generations that will be caused by loaning energy companies money!
Ms Truss said a while ago that her speech as a teenage Lib Dem calling for the abolition of the Monarchy was a mistake so don't get your hopes up sazz1.
I hope that, if ever cannabis is legalised, there will be more traffic police recruited to pick up those driving under the influence.
Forget 'We will deliver ' x 3, I think we need to go back to everything being 'the fault of the previous (Labour) government ' ad infinitum et nauseam, with obviously, one significant word change.

Adding to grammargran and GSM's posts: she's just been through what felt like an endless round of hustings for this role, most of which were reported verbatim, and some recorded.
She has had ample opportunity to set out what her vision for the country is. She has avoided any discussion of the NHS or social care, I can't recall anything on benefits, or tackling child hunger and poverty, and she consistently said she would not provide direct help with fuel bills (although she is reportedly backtracking on that now).
What she has focused on is the same anti-Europe, anti-immigration (whilst being forced to recruit for the NHS overseas), confected culture war nonsense that has marked her time in various offices.
It could be argued that she was merely feeding the beast to get elected, but her track record does not suggest that is the case. I think there are ample grounds - and evidence for them - for concern and worry.
Excellent post.

For Gawds sake- sorry for seeming sexist- as im a woman too and all- but how many more times do they have to put in a (conservative) woman till they realise IT DOES NOT WORK, and it wont help the beggaring mess the UK is now in!?
I am not a Conservative. I do not like Liz Truss.
But can you tell me why - logically - "IT DOES NOT WORK" if a Conservative woman becomes a Prime Minister?
Margaret Thatcher's premiership seemed to work quite well. Not necessarily for me but that was largely down to her ideology, not the fact that she was a woman.
And maybe Theresa May failed because she was a Remainer doing a Brexiter's job, I don't know - but I don't think it was because she was a woman.
I'm genuinely puzzled why you think a woman isn't suited to the job.
And yes, It does seem sexist.
You Must Be Joking !!!!
And even Nadine Dorries doesn’t want to be in her cabinet! Mind you she’s off to the Lords isn’t she.

Well if any of us need a truss ...
not only unfair but narrow minded. What is unfair about being aware that our new PM does not have any sort of mandate from the country, is wedded to divisive policies and has all the charisma of a gnat? We cannot pretend that things are otherwise. What is unfair is that we are lumbered with her, like it or not.

Come back Boris!
You are joking? Aren't you?

Gawd help us !!!
Completely hopeless - probably worse even than Johnson, but is that even possible!?!
Perhaps people are prejudice against female prime ministers. Well Maggie was a formidable disaster for industry and working class people, Theresa May was a weak wet dishcloth unable to achieve anything so I'm hoping Lizzy is at least better than those 2.
Maybe we should have kept Boris the cake eater. At least he achieved quite a few things during the most difficult time for the world since the war. Better the devil you know springs to mind
