Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 14:58:36

Well said.

Adding to grammargran and GSM's posts: she's just been through what felt like an endless round of hustings for this role, most of which were reported verbatim, and some recorded.

She has had ample opportunity to set out what her vision for the country is. She has avoided any discussion of the NHS or social care, I can't recall anything on benefits, or tackling child hunger and poverty, and she consistently said she would not provide direct help with fuel bills (although she is reportedly backtracking on that now).

What she has focused on is the same anti-Europe, anti-immigration (whilst being forced to recruit for the NHS overseas), confected culture war nonsense that has marked her time in various offices.

It could be argued that she was merely feeding the beast to get elected, but her track record does not suggest that is the case. I think there are ample grounds - and evidence for them - for concern and worry.

Gabrielle56 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:29:41

I third that!!

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 14:27:42

Exactly, grammargran. She’s not a complete unknown. A Foreign Secretary with little knowledge of geography it seemed. And now a PM whose declared economic policies have been widely criticised, who will likely appoint Cabinet ministers on the basis of support during her campaign.

grammargran Tue 06-Sept-22 14:20:47

She may well be Nanny27 but I think people are going on her past record. It’s worrying that she seems in thrall to the ERG group, that she intends to fill her Cabinet with loyalists rather than competent and experienced politicians, to lower taxes when so many of the least well off and vulnerable don’t pay any tax. I was dismayed when, hearing she had won, gave her husband barely a glance, snatched her prepared speech from his hand and strode to the podium without even shaking her opponent’s hand, let alone a brief word of commiseration. That spoke volumes to me, and all of the above and more is evidence enough for me that she is definitely not going to change her spots …

nanna8 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:20:09

Prejudging and making personal comments about someone’s appearance is pretty rank on my book. I always thought gransnet was a fair place with fair minded and open hearted readers. Now I am not so sure and I find it very disappointing. Maybe this woman will turn out to be a poor Prime Minister, maybe not but she should not be judged before she has even started. Shame.

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:18:43

Perhaps we've had enough of charisma, though.

Not that I thought Johnson had charisma, more chutzpah.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 14:16:37

Quite simply, her manner doesn’t inspire confidence. She has no charisma,

How depressing Gransnet is becoming. No-one on here knows how she will perform as a PM. She hasn't had the chance yet. She may be great she may be awful but condemning someone outright without any evidence is not only unfair but narrow minded.

Yes, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

She wouldn't have been my choice but we should reserve judgement.

polly123 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:13:29

I can't believe anyone could vote for her! She will make a complete mess of everything. I can't look at her for very long as she seems to have a permanent smirk on her face.

Sorry to those who like Liz Truss but to me she comes across as slightly nervy, unsure of where she is and what she is doing and her delivery as a speaker is dreadful in her slightly nervy school teacher voice. Boris may have been a rubbishy PM but at least he had stage presence and could speak and command an audience. I take it that dishy Rishi is off to the US now t make more serious money.

I agree coastalgran. If you don’t command the stage people don’t listen. I look forward to seeing how she fares at PMQs. I feel a serious bout of embarrassment coming on.

Granny23 Tue 06-Sept-22 13:59:18

I beg to differ too - Ian Blackford is a lovely man, much loved by his constituents for all that he does for them. Expecting respect for Westminster from the SNP , when other members walk out, or hiss, boo, to drown them out every time they rise to speak. The SNP are the 3rd largest party at Westminster so, I think it is them who should be shown a bit of respect

Bluecat Tue 06-Sept-22 13:57:28

The entire contest was a farce. I read one comment which I thought was very true. "It's a choice between a fat cat and a half-wit, but the fat cat is too brown for Tory Party members so we're getting the half-wit." And so it was to be.

After we watched Truss's acceptance speech, my DH singled out one line as particularly pointless. "I campaigned as a Conservative and I shall govern as a Conservative." No, really? We expected you to campaign as a Conservative and govern as a communist.

So now we have Liz 'pork markets' Truss at the helm. God help this poor country. Haven't we suffered enough?

Pantglas2 Tue 06-Sept-22 13:38:51

How to win friends and influence people - not.

Very true, Casdon.

For goodness sake! Give the woman a chance. She might be the best thing since Mrs Thatcher for all we know! The fact she doesn’t like / trust Cranky is a bonus.

That’s a really silly thing to say kiligran. Making her feelings public about the democratically elected first minister of Scotland is profoundly foolish. One of the first rules of good politics is not making your personal feelings public.

I beg to differ. Many politicians feel the same …. and about that horrible man Ian Blackford. It isn’t as if they show any respect to Westminster …. either of them.

Agreed Casdon. When Drakeford did it to Johnson I’m sure we were all appalled- weren’t we?

With Drakeford as I’m sure you know it was an overheard private conversation Pantglas, but nonetheless I didn’t approve. I think it’s political incompetence to discuss your feelings about other leaders in derogatory terms. Johnson has said some disgraceful things about Macron, and I’ve cringed every time. How to win friends and influence people - not.

Love the fact people are condemning Sunak for backstabbing the back stabbing bas***rd Boris grin

Blondiescot I knew that. ? As a Scot, you could hardly not know where the border lies. I should just accept that Northumberland is England's best kept secret. It's better that way! ???

Liz hasn't proved herself to be honest in tbe past as she cheated on her husband. Not saying it will happen again but can she act in all our interests given her track record.

That would not affect my view of her. Other things would and do.

oldeman Tue 06-Sept-22 13:02:54

Does anybody know of anyone in any party that would make a good PM? Someone that has the b##ls to deal with the fuel crisis and many other financial problems being faced by the public at large! I think the answer is NO. Dig up Winston Churchill I say and breath some life back in him just long enough for him to sort it out. ( a couple of hours maybe)
