Know what amazes me?
She's only been in Parliament for 9 years!
What a swift rise to power!

The woman is a hypocrite claims to be a Christian had an affair backed legalisation of cannabis and wanted the monarchy abolished.

What, though, is un-Christian about legalising cannabis, it's an addictive substance like alcohol and tobacco? And wanting to replace the monarchy - an epitome of privilege - and replace it with a more democratic governance doesn't strike me as being particularly un-Christian either.

As for her affair, that's a private matter, but I am minded of Jesus' admonishment to the Pharisees, ‘Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Stone’. Even as an atheist, I can see the validity of that observation. People make mistakes in life - should that bar them from being a Christian?

I will not judge her in her personal space, only in what she does for or against the nation she's now going to lead.

Not the best example, as Brown was unopposed when he stood for the leadership Freya5, ie all the MPs supported him to take over from Blair. Actually, it was known well before Blair stood down that he would be replaced by Brown, they came as a package - so in fact everybody who had voted Labour voted for him, rather than nobody.

Freya5 Tue 06-Sept-22 10:57:29

I don’t think Gordon Brown [L)had even that number of voters. In fact no one voted for him. We do not have. a Presidential System in the U.K. We vote for a party leader. Would you be happy to see Cons vote for a Labour Party leader?

Are you asking me, Maybee? If so, none that I’m aware of, and apparently staff that they are going to recruit abroad. If anyone believes that will work, let me know, as I have a bridge for sale.

Just listened to Boris’s farewell speech. Real troop-rallying, election-winning oration which Truss will never match. I think that, like Margaret Thatcher, she needs voice coaching. It made a big difference to Thatcher’s gravitas.

But almost every word of it was either an outright lie (sorted social care, for example), an obsfucation (the employment figures, which he’s been censured for by theONS before) or taking the credit for something he hasn’t done (the fibre broadband role out is purely due to the private sector).

The Tory voters I know (some even in my own family, shock horror ?) don’t find this edifying any more (to be fair, most of them never did).

So how many new hospitals has he actually built? And who is staffing them?

Athrawes Tue 06-Sept-22 10:27:56

All I can add to the mix is 'fingers crossed' !!!!

JenniferEccles - of course many people are concerned that she is a Tory. We have witnessed their callousness, their corruption and their inability to grasp even the most basic facts about how the poorer members of our communities live. And watched them pursue policies that make those lives worse. Why would we not be concerned about that?

As to Truss as an individual, she is of course open to criticism - that is how a democracy works. We examine those who wish to govern us because we want the best and the most honest.

I do not think it is irrelevant for the electorate to feel some concern that she cheated on her husband for several years - it is part of who she is and part of what constitutes her moral compass. We have just got rid of one PM on the grounds that his morality was suspect - it is no wonder that we would have hoped that a new PM might be better in that regard.

It is unfortunate that she also has no charisma or gravitas to better represent us on the international stage. If she says "Deliver, deliver, deliver" once more I might be forced to emigrate! Really it is pathetic - she is talking about delivering on the NHS for example, but has been part of the government who has watched this decline for political reasons.

I am not extolling the opposition - I think they have not been ready for government until now - nor tub-thumping for the left. I just know that the Tory era has been so destructive to ordinary lives and is set to get worse. We need a government with integrity; and one that is not so tied to political ideology that it can ignore the misery that is the lot of many, and indeed seek to make this worse.

What has her face got to do with it? Personal comments from women on this thread, “face in a jar” etc. are distasteful.
The comments about Boris were usually about his scruffy appearance, ruffling of hair before TV appearances etc. Not about his actual face, which we can’t do much about.
I’m Workers Revolutionary Party diluted to Labour BTW, so no defender of Tories.

Grantanow Tue 06-Sept-22 09:52:19

She was elected by 81,000 Tory votes. That's about 0.17% of the UK voting population. Sunak was preferred by a majority of Tory MPs. She has absolutely no personal mandate from the British people. If she is the best the Tory Party can offer then they are in dire straits.

Being a Christian doesn’t make you flawless, and quite what the legalisation of cannabis and abolition of the monarchy have to do with Christianity escapes me.

I wondered about that, too.

Interesting how it is starting already with posters making comments about Liz Truss' voice, her features, her hormones etc. Will it not be long before people start delving into her personal life? Really?

Unfortunately it seems the norm that female politicians are judged by their looks, dress sense and marriage. Intelligent debate should concentrate on her policies - I would have expected better from GNs

But exactly the same happened with Boris Johnson, it’s not because she’s female?

I think Boris was given a bit of a "honeymoon" period before the personal comments started - Truss hasn't even been sworn in and they have started

No, it started before and immediately after his appointment. Here’s one example, there are hundreds online.

I’m in complete agreement with you Dickens. Truss was brought up by very left wing parents and supported the Lib Dems at university. Thatcher was a much stronger, and totally committed, personality. The Iron Lady indeed, compared with whom Truss comes across as a woman of straw.

I agree too.

I think though that Thatcher, much as I was against her ideology, was a completely different kettle of fish.

Her 'conviction' was entrenched at an early age, part of her upbringing. She didn't waver. Truss was once a Remainer - now a confirmed Brexiter. I cannot imagine Thatcher ever doing such a u-turn - this lady really "was not for turning".

I don't think Truss will ever 'match Thatch'!!

Strange how you can admire someone's qualities without actually liking them!

Didn't Brown and Callaghan come into the top job the same way as Truss?

Let's see how she steps up to the plate she got a hell of a lot to do
if not she's out.

The last PM who was voted in and then out by the electorate was Edward Heath, and since WW2 more PMs have been deposed by their party or the government than by the electorate.

Petera Tue 06-Sept-22 09:21:17

JenniferEccles She’s got the in-tray from hell as one tv political editor put it

Yes, when she finds out who’s been running the country for the last twelve years she'll really give them a piece of her mind. She is one of the longest serving cabinet minister still around so let’s not pretend that she hasn’t already had a chance.
