Saw the thread earlier about favourite film and just wondered which is the best gig/concert you have been to. Mine is Queen at Knebworth, closely followed by Michael Jackson at Wembley and Cardiff, though in fairness MJ was more of a show than a concert.

Dinahmo I saw Michael Brecker twice, once with Pat Metheny. Also a big fan of E.S.T. too. Would have loved to have seen Chick Corea.

Not the best by any measure but I saw Ginger Baker (Cream) in the early 80’s at a small venue. He was completely off his head. Grumpiest by a long chalk, absolutely Van Morrison.

Bijou What a romantic place to visit on your anniversary, albeit very close to the end of the war. Was there much damage?
What a long and interesting life. So many stories to tell.
Wishing you well. flowers

When I saw Bowie at the Isle of Wight, I thought he was quite arrogant. He didn't want to play any of his hits and basically told the audience it was tough.

Not exactly a gig because I have never or wanted to go to one but in 1951 on our fourth wedding anniversary we went to La Scala in Milan to see the ballet La Boutique Fantasque.

Having been to Glastonbury many times the list is long but my first real and overwhelming gig was Bob Dylan at 'The Picnic' at Blackbush Aerodrome in 1978...he started singing Baby Please Stop Crying which set me off and I didn't stop!! David Bowie at Glastonbury in 2000 is high on the list which became more poignant after his death and also Bruce Springsteen in 2009 also at Glasto... I really never expected this to happen as every year when I asked Michael Eavis when he was going to get him to play he always said, with a smile, that he 'was trying'!! By the time 'the Boss' came on stage on the Saturday night I thought I might spontaneously combust!!

Marc Bolan the most beautiful man who ever lived saw him at Brixton Sundown 1972 just before Christmas. I loved T. Rex. Next best was Bowie doing Ziggy Stardust concerts. Saw Queen a few times with Freddie Mercury, when they were good and also Lou Reed was good.

I am a big fan of The Strawbs and saw them in Manchester when I was a 6th former. I went on my own - I'm amazed my parents allowed it - as none of my friends were fans and the guy who introduced me to their music was away at university. The support act was a singer called Jonathan Kelly and I became a fan of his too.

Many years later I saw them again at a gig in Oxford. There were very few people in the audience, at a venue in a pub basement, so we were able to chat with the band when they took a break. A very under-rated band. My ex husband got tickets as he knew I was a fan and when we got there we found a couple of close friends in the tiny audience - one like me a long time fan and he'd persuaded the other friend to go along.

@ sofa , I have a large poster of Mick Jagger from The Stones in the park concert I think 1969 . No idea where I got it from but it’s very big smile

I’m a bit shallow, so I think every concert I’ve been to was the best, at the time! First concert was The Small Faces with Steve Marriott in Newcastle in ‘64.
Loved Seal and Michael Bolton at Gateshead Sage, which is a lovely small venue with wonderful acoustics. Not strictly music, but the Kodo Drummers were definitely worth seeing!
Can’t forget Pavarotti either.

polly123 Thu 08-Sept-22 14:41:40

Santana were wonderful as was Pavarotti at Leeds Castle.

Shirls52000 Thu 08-Sept-22 14:38:00

Thé Eagles at Sheffield Arena, Fleetwood Mac ( original line up) at Leeds and Lighthouse Family in Sheffield

Flew to Boston to see Tina Turner live in concert…..didn’t have a ticket but bought one for a ridiculous price last minute and got a great seat on the main floor to watch her amazing one night only performance. Caught the underground train called the T back to my hotel afterwards and it was crammed full of Tuna Turner fans …and .everybody was singing her famous songs at the top of their voices! I’ve never forgotten that night….it was wonderful…..and was was Tina!

Hundreds over the last nearly 60 years.

Bob Dylan at the Albert Hall when he was still acoustic.

Miles Davis (twice)

EST (Esbjorn Svenson Trio) (3 o4 4 times) Sadly Svenson drowned in a diving accident some years ago

Brecker Brothers - sadly Michael Brecker died of leukemia back in 2007. He was a brilliant saxophonist

Brian Wilson with the Wondermints - Ipswich 2004. The Beach Boys were and are my favourite band. He had been having health problems and his voice hadn't been too good - as seen at the Queen's Jubilee Party in 2002. By 2004 it was improving and I, like so many in the audience, was really happy to hear his music played so well. By the first encore I was in tears of joy,as were many others. They managed to recreate the sounds of the the albums with their instruments and voices and they were brilliant.

I'm glad that I have lived through the period of small clubs and concert halls, not the large arenas and stadia that are used now. I was lucky.

SachaMac Thu 08-Sept-22 13:58:18

I’ve seen Bon Jovi several times, once in Manchester, then a couple of times in Coventry (in the Golden Circle) & then I took two of my DC to Aston Villa, absolutely brilliant, on one occasion supported by Nickelback which was a bonus. Others that stand out for me are Dr Hook in Sheffield & The Kaiser Chiefs & Status Quo at Notts arena. I would love to have seen Oasis and the Rolling Stones (in their hay day)

Mumtoni Thu 08-Sept-22 13:55:01

Gotta be 24/12/1984
Wham concert, it was banging....rip george?

icanhandthemback Thu 08-Sept-22 13:42:57

The most entertaining gig was Rick Wakeman; he is such a brilliant musician and raconteur.
My first gig, so an eye opener, was Judas Priest.
Loved Black Sabbath, The Who and...Cliff Richard.
The one that stands out for me because Phil had such amazing control of the audience was Thin Lizzy.
I'd go a million miles to see Avenged 7fold...I think I may be their oldest fan!
My most disappointing gig (apart from the John Miles one I missed by arriving a day late) was Brand New. I absolutely loved their "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" album so was thrilled when they played at an intimate little venue near me. I know I had the 'flu but it was such a lacklustre performance with so much dry ice so you couldn't see the band that I fell asleep. I haven't listened to the album since.

Bowie..Twice, once at Earls court late 70's and again in Edinburgh. It was tremendous, he remains my hero, and was from me being aged 12 !

TiggyW Thu 08-Sept-22 13:36:37

I haven’t been to many concerts, but Bonjovi in Manchester were great (several times). I wish I’d seen David Bowie, Tina Turner and Pink Floyd. ?My best ever has to be Peter Kay at the MEN Arena.
The only problem for me now, is that I don’t want to set foot in there since the bombing. It just doesn’t feel right.
There’s also the problem of Covid - my sister and husband went to see Guns ‘n’ Roses in London during the Summer and returned infected; the same happened to our nephew and niece at Download this year.
I’ve actually got Covid myself, but from a cruise, not a concert. It’s still around everywhere! ?

Mine Thu 08-Sept-22 13:26:16

Went go Celtic Connections to see Eddie Reader sings Burns....it was amazing...

Justhavingacuppa Thu 08-Sept-22 13:17:21

Bruce Springsteen at Wembley and then Hyde Park. About 30 years between the 2 and he was amazing both times

Nvella Thu 08-Sept-22 13:16:38

Leonard Cohen both at the Albert Hall 2008 and at the O2 in 2013. Unbeatable. Also Paul Simon’s farewell concert in Hyde Park.

missdeke Thu 08-Sept-22 13:15:30

Pink Floyd at Knebworth.

Susieq62 Thu 08-Sept-22 13:12:26

The Beatles in 1963
The Who in 1965
Tina Turner
Rolling Stones
Coldplay at Cardiff 2016
Any Elbow concert

granjan66 Thu 08-Sept-22 13:09:34

Tina Turner at O2

Nellie54 Thu 08-Sept-22 13:03:32

Celina Dion and the supporting act was The Corrs. Both were outstanding.
Worse was an Elton John’s at Arena, all he wanted to do was go!
