As I am sitting in the South of France covered in mosquito bites, make up sliding off my face and feeling in need of another shower an hour after the last one!

It got me to thinking about my winter boots, cashmere jumpers, casseroles, sweeping leaves, peat fires, mash potatoes and long walks..

What are you looking forward to?

Let’s keep this one positive…..no mention of fuel bills please?

Autumn starts for me when the robin’s song changes. It’s very different to the spring song.

What a lovely uplifting post. I'm loving reading everyone's thoughts on Autumn. I'm more of a summer person but I have found I struggled with the humidity this year.
I love the colour of the autumn leaves, nice walks and no hayfever.

The other day I found several Delia recipes for thick, winter-type soups, which I’m really looking forward to making.

I'm with Bluebell - I'm already looking forward to spring and summer 2023.

Venison chilli with borlotti beans cooked by my husband, homemade spicy pumpkin soup, roast chicken and leftovers, will be doing some bulk cooking in the oven this year and freezing portions.

walking on dry scrunchy leaves, an excuse to wear my old cashmere jumpers including a deep ruby red one that always cheers me up - hope the moths haven’t got to it.

Wearing my beautiful big coat I bought from Oxfam online.

That said I have loved the hot summer and watching the few things I planted grow into summer from Spring and will miss my fresh herbs from the garden .

I hate driving home from work in the dark and icy refrozen roads.

Might be bbqing a duck for Christmas at this rate! We have ordered a big bag of charcoal…

Holiday in the warm planned for early in the New Year. Fingers crossed .

Marks and Spencer’s getting low in stock on thermals apparently!

Shouldn’t wish your life away but in honesty i don’t mind Autumn but hate winter and look forward to spring. I am not that bothered about the temperature but I hate the dark mornings and it getting dark so early in the day.
Not a fan of Christmas either

I’m in agreement with Maw, the only downside being all the ?stuff on display in the shops. Next already have some out.

The Next I went into today had Hallowe’en bits nothing Christmas themed.

On Monday the Card Factory had masses of Christmas cards and carrier bags, and Sainsbury’s had a load of chocolate Father Christmases etc., which you passed as soon as you walked into the shop.

Retiring, counting down, just a few weeks now.

HillyN Thu 08-Sept-22 17:33:01

Harvest festival, autumn colours in the trees, piles of scrunchy fallen leaves, my nerines flowering. An extra hour in bed when the clocks change.

Alioop Thu 08-Sept-22 17:05:21

The pros: My jumpers and boots, curled up with a book and a hot chocolate and the colours of the trees.
The cons: Winter's next, Xmas stuff everywhere and dark nights.

What a gorgeous post!! I love the smell of autumn walks, the chill in the air then home to lovely hot bath and an evening by the telly with a new drama, the curtains shut and the candles lit.

TiggyW Thu 08-Sept-22 15:57:30

LucyW - best wishes for your hip operation.??
polly123 - I couldn’t have put it better myself! It’s the cosiness and colours of Autumn - plus a new series of Autumnwatch! ?

Just wondering - why am I getting adverts for engagement rings on Gransnet?! Not really the best demographic…??

Shill29 Thu 08-Sept-22 15:42:17

New series of Doc Martin. Hope they don’t kill him off though …

cariad, the Summer makes me feel ill.
I’m not alone.
The heat, the brightness, all of the sensory overload that we Summer loathes have.
I would never diminish the feelings of people who suffer in the Winter.
Is it so difficult to understand that people experience things differently?

cariad25 Thu 08-Sept-22 15:26:50

How anyone could be even a little happy about the 'end of Summer' is absolutely and totally beyond me!!! Maybe I'm biased because I live in the the country with a beautiful view and a garden to sit in but honestly...swap long warm sunny days, reading a book while sipping a cool drink and alfresco dining etc for drawing the curtains at 4.30pm and having to spend money on heating and lighting...Seriously?!

Milest0ne Thu 08-Sept-22 15:10:42

I have a beautiful Acer tree which changes to red, yellow and orange still with green undertones. It is starting to turn now.
I also have a rowan tree which produces white berries which become suffused with pink when the leaves have dropped. It looks like a tree covered in blossom till the flock of waxwings and bull finches come and strip it in a weekend in January. They need searching for but there are always some flowers in the garden right through winter

LucyW Thu 08-Sept-22 14:58:03

I am hopefully getting a new hip before the end of the year so I an looking forward to the benefits that will bring. Can't say I am really a fan of Autumn or Winter as I live alone in a rather isolated location and the days are so short.

polly123 Thu 08-Sept-22 14:31:48

So good to see the end of Summer with the awful heatwaves and boring clothes. Bring on the season of wearing boots and cashmere scarves, Lovely cool weather and don't mind the wild storms etc. Love the smell of Autumn, the sound of crackling leaves and the beautiful colours.

missdeke Thu 08-Sept-22 13:19:42

The only thing I look forward to at the end of a long hot summer, I love the heat, is warm towels after my shower.
