What do you think about this?

This weekend thousands of people were due to hike a marathon along the Jurassic path for MacMillan.

It has been cancelled due to todays sad news.

These people have given their time to train and find sponsors.
Many will be out of pocket having paid for transport and accommodation.
Thousands of pounds will now not be raised for people with cancer.

What good does this do anyone ?
Is it what the Queen would have wanted ?
In my opinion , a bad decision by MacMillan.

Esspee

I have always thought sponsored walks, runs etc. completely pointless. (Apart from raising money for worthwhile causes)
Wouldn't something like beach cleanups, sprucing up deprived neighbourhoods etc. be much more worthwhile?

I absolutely agree with this. It would be far more productive and demand more effort! I have done sponsored walks but in all honesty would rather give the cash myself than do a pointless walk.

The sky won't fall in just because a few events are cancelled for 10 days.
The Last Night of the Proma is a jolly loud event which is not recognised as appropriate during a period of National Mourning.
It is a case of Respect with a capital R.

People are in afternoon at present

Hithere Sat 10-Sept-22 14:20:15

A country is made of its citizens and inhabitants - it is not it's own separate entity

People are in morning, not legal entities called countries

Zoejory Sat 10-Sept-22 14:19:45

Another thing is people from numerous organisations will be required for this massive funeral

I'm not sure why football matches have been cancelled though? Police presence maybe?

It really is a once in a lifetime event

I think you’re right about the reason for many cancellations Dearknees - afraid of negative publicity. Life goes on.

Dearknees1 Sat 10-Sept-22 14:12:26

Organisers and organisations seem to be running scared in case they are criticised for not responding in what is deemed to be the appropriate manner. Not many people alive today will remember what happened when the last monarch died but in any case it was a different era. I don’t think this kind of extreme response will will impress younger people. Even at my age (72) I feel that my response is being controlled by protocol. I recently lost a friend I’d been close to for 60 years and am in mourning for her. For me the death of the queen marks the end of an era and I feel for her family as I would with anyone but that’s as far as it goes. I never saw her except in photographs and on the screen so I can’t say she felt very real to me. I can’t claim to have known her, only the image which was portrayed through the media.

Zoejory Sat 10-Sept-22 14:10:37

The country is in morning though
. All very well saying we're not in morning individually. But it means nothing. Country is in mourning

AngeLu Sat 10-Sept-22 14:09:14

I am sure MacMillan will have thought long and hard before arriving at this decision ; it obviously didn’t feel right to them to go ahead at this time . We can all make our own decisions about mourning so I certainly wouldn’t criticise theirs.

Soozikinzi Sat 10-Sept-22 13:53:20

They do seem to have gone overboard . On radio two it's only sad music and no chat . Will it be like this for two weeks ? I think the suicide rate will go up if this carries on .

grandtanteJE65 Sat 10-Sept-22 13:47:59

I find it rather sad that mourning a death by cancelling mass events or something supposedly enjoyable is, judging from the attitude of many posters, no longer acceptable.

Admittedly raising money for cancer research is a laudable thing to do, but the event can presumeably be re-scheduled, or if that is impossible or too expensive, the sponsors can simply send the amount they have promised to Macmillan, either in their own names, or as a memorial to the Queen if they want to do so.

Shazmo24 Sat 10-Sept-22 13:40:42

Lots of events have been cancelled which has meant many people have now lost money.
We were due to have a food festival in our area which was cancelled.
I don't think that the Queen would have minded if events had gone ahead at all.

DaisyAnne Sat 10-Sept-22 13:13:42

Thank you Mollygo. A perfect example of the give and take that has to go with the "right to my opinion" view.

Lucca Sat 10-Sept-22 13:12:33

GrammyGrammy

It's known as Respect.

Explain ? Why could the events scheduled be adapted to
Be in honour of the queen
Ate you going to do
Nothing for a week?

DaisyAnne Sat 10-Sept-22 13:12:20

Nobody knows what the Queen would think about anything.

Also, people feel how they feel. We have no right or permission to tell them what that should be or how they should behave because of those feelings.

Both of these types of gossipy comments overstep even the most extreme view of the oft quoted "right to an opinion".

Mollygo Sat 10-Sept-22 13:09:37

HeavenLeigh

I’m not mourning

That’s your right.

HeavenLeigh Sat 10-Sept-22 13:07:00

I’m not mourning

Nannapat1 Sat 10-Sept-22 13:02:37

Agreed, many people will have their time severely disrupted and money will be lost too.
I cannot imagine that HM would have approved.

Lin663 Sat 10-Sept-22 12:51:40

I get that it’s sad, that she was Queen for a long time, that she was extremely dutiful….but all this national misery is way over the top and achieves nothing….let’s face it, an extremely old (and highly privileged) lady has died - it happens every day and people just get on with living their lives, this really shouldn’t be any different…

Brigidsdaughter Sat 10-Sept-22 12:50:13

I agree with OP

AshleysGran Sat 10-Sept-22 12:40:27

The cricket Test Match was suspended for one day yesterday but has resumed today.

Nannan2 Sat 10-Sept-22 12:36:31

I believe that H.M. the Queen would have been of the 'keep calm & carry on' brigade

StoneofDestiny Sat 10-Sept-22 12:30:39

I'm neither bereaved or in mourning. I'm no royalist and see many people working in public service roles and in the volunteer services with no shadow of the rewards the royal family and their heirs get for doing so.
It's ridiculous the off shoots of this 'grief hysteria' is being imposed on everyone.
The expenses already are mounting, the cost of the funeral and coronation will be ££millions. Royal expensive 'traditions' need paring down to the bare minimum - they are playing with taxpayers money like it's theirs!
We are a country in financial crisis with an NHS on its knees. Let's get the money redirected to this - that would be worthwhile respect.

Frogs Sat 10-Sept-22 12:25:09

Bijou

The strikes should not have been cancelled. The workers deserve a living wage and if they are not given it they have to protest,in some way.

Sorry Bijou - I was speaking from a purely selfish point of view as I travel 25 miles every Thursday to babysit my grandson that’s why I was pleased the strike planned for next has been cancelled as I don’t like the drive there.

Nooshboosh Sat 10-Sept-22 12:22:05

it is a shame it was cancelled
