This weekend thousands of people were due to hike a marathon along the Jurassic path for MacMillan.

It has been cancelled due to todays sad news.

These people have given their time to train and find sponsors.
Many will be out of pocket having paid for transport and accommodation.
Thousands of pounds will now not be raised for people with cancer.

What good does this do anyone ?
Is it what the Queen would have wanted ?
In my opinion , a bad decision by MacMillan.

It is rewarding that so many people want to remember and pay their respects to such a gracious lady. Even non- Royalists had an affinity for her.

Surely we should be respectfully celebrating her wonderful life and her achievements. I'm sure she wouldn't want the public to miss out on their pleasures. Especially, Charity events being cancelled. I thought events would have gone ahead but a a mark of respect held.

I’m wondering when the funeral will be. I’m meant to be attending a wedding on the 24th September.
The couple wouldn’t have to cancel their wedding Wouid they ?

Exactly what Niucla said!

In my opinion Her Majesty would not have wanted ANY charity event cancelled due to her recent passing. However, like me, I suspect she may have questioned whether or not to have the footfall of thousands of people eroding the Jurassic Way was ecologically sound. Why not stick to metalled surfaces?... which are far more suited to this type of event... such as tomorrow's Great North Run, which I'm relieved to hear will go ahead as planned.
The walk would not have gone along the actual path , at least not much of it. A route would have been marked for the walkers.

There should be a paragraph gap before the last 3 lines.

I read this morning that HM the Queen had bone cancer. So it seems strange that a cancer charity is cancelling events.

Our community choir was on tenterhooks for our concert tonight after a year of hard work ! We are going ahead thank goodness and I know Her Majesty would approve as it is to celebrate getting through the pandemic plus raising money for local charities !
I think today’s events could have taken place but not yesterday due to respect

I think many will be disappointed that things that they looked forward to will be cancelled or postponed Kalu. However, they can be rearranged. Today and for the next 10 days or so, are not about me or you. They are about a lady who gave a lifetime to doing her best for this country. That does matter to many, not as much to some and not at all to others. Ten days is not a lot to be asked to put your desires on hold while many people work through this. Even the demand for instant gratification is halted by death.

"for the next 10 days or so, are not about me or you" - quite right.

I also agree with all the posts that sponsor's pledged money can still be contributed to whatever good causes the events are for. If I pledge £1 a mile for someone doing a 20 mile run I still pay the full amount even if they only complete 5 miles.

The strikes should not have been cancelled. The workers deserve a living wage and if they are not given it they have to protest,in some way.

Bijou Sat 10-Sept-22 12:08:39

All the money that people have spent on flowers could have gone to charity rather than profiting florists.

jerseygirl Sat 10-Sept-22 12:10:45

Its ridiculous, totally unnecessary. The queen would not approve.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 10-Sept-22 12:11:06

OK, so rail workers and Postal workers deserve a living wage but Florist do not?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 10-Sept-22 12:11:50

The unions cancelled the strikes out of respect Bijou and I believe support for their cause will be all the stronger for that. As for flowers, have you never taken or sent flowers when a death has occurred?

Alioop Sat 10-Sept-22 12:16:07

My friends charity golf event has went ahead today, it's for children with cancer and I'm glad they carried on with it. Charities lost so much with Covid stopping everything and I'm sure the Royal family would rather these charity events still take place.

Theoddbird Sat 10-Sept-22 12:17:42

I am sure that if people are asked they would still pay what they had pledged. I know I would.

I think you are correct, as I know I would pay whatever money I had pledged, whether or not the event went ahead.

We are in a unique moment in time after all,

Nooshboosh Sat 10-Sept-22 12:22:05

it is a shame it was cancelled

Sorry Bijou - I was speaking from a purely selfish point of view as I travel 25 miles every Thursday to babysit my grandson that’s why I was pleased the strike planned for next has been cancelled as I don’t like the drive there.

StoneofDestiny Sat 10-Sept-22 12:30:39

I'm neither bereaved or in mourning. I'm no royalist and see many people working in public service roles and in the volunteer services with no shadow of the rewards the royal family and their heirs get for doing so.
It's ridiculous the off shoots of this 'grief hysteria' is being imposed on everyone.
The expenses already are mounting, the cost of the funeral and coronation will be ££millions. Royal expensive 'traditions' need paring down to the bare minimum - they are playing with taxpayers money like it's theirs!
We are a country in financial crisis with an NHS on its knees. Let's get the money redirected to this - that would be worthwhile respect.

Nannan2 Sat 10-Sept-22 12:36:31

I believe that H.M. the Queen would have been of the 'keep calm & carry on' brigade

AshleysGran Sat 10-Sept-22 12:40:27

The cricket Test Match was suspended for one day yesterday but has resumed today.

Brigidsdaughter Sat 10-Sept-22 12:50:13

I agree with OP

Lin663 Sat 10-Sept-22 12:51:40

I get that it’s sad, that she was Queen for a long time, that she was extremely dutiful….but all this national misery is way over the top and achieves nothing….let’s face it, an extremely old (and highly privileged) lady has died - it happens every day and people just get on with living their lives, this really shouldn’t be any different…

Nannapat1 Sat 10-Sept-22 13:02:37

Agreed, many people will have their time severely disrupted and money will be lost too.
I cannot imagine that HM would have approved.
