My hands! My hands!!

For a few years now, my thumbs have occasionally seemed to suddenly bend inwards, and get stuck in a sort of spasm.

It's impossible to move the thumb back into its normal position unless I prise it with my "good" hand.

The last few weeks though, both thumbs do it, along with some of my fingers.

It's very painful- like cramp.

I'm not asking for a diagnosis, just wondering if anyone else gets it.

The whole outer side of my palm is now curling inwards, ouch ouch ouch!

Yes I have to prise mine aswell, as won't go back on its own

I find wringing my hands helps.
It has gone off, now, hopefully back to a once in a while occurrence.
I shall get some tonic water, I think.

I'm not trying to be a bossy-boots (yes I am!) but do try taking magnesium tablets as well

Ps you can swig one down with tonic water ?

Does anyone else have trouble pressing the tops of aerosols?
I do, and decided to buy a roll-on one, but I can't open it!

I really don't want to take any more pills.
I have lived problems, and am on, I think, about 20 odd pills a day, already.

Lexisgranny Sat 17-Sept-22 10:47:18

henetha oh yes they are a nuisance. Also we don’t use sauce very much, but those plastic bottles that you have to squeeze drive me demented, and it seems so difficult to buy the glass alternative except in very large bottles, which is probably why Worcestershire Sauce generally sits in solitary state in the cupboard

I know how you feel but they're not medication, they're a mineral supplement. You can get it in powder form too.

Or it is found in:

Whole grains and dark-green, leafy vegetables are good sources of magnesium. Low-fat milk and yogurt contain magnesium as well. ...
Dried beans and legumes (such as soybeans, baked beans, lentils, and peanuts) and nuts (such as almonds and cashews) provide magnesium.

Yes, but you have to be really careful with your liver because everything needs to be processed through it, and mine is only working at 30 percent capacity.
I shall investigate, seeing as I cant ask my gp or consultant.

I have Dupuytrans but thankfully my fingers aren’t turning in. But the nodules seem to be making my hands rather claw like and the thumbs turn inwards. On top of that I have arthritis in my thumb joints. My hands used to be my one vanity. I do take magnesium and also turmeric in the form of golden paste.

Megnesium gel to rub in could be an alternative:

Oh yes, Lexisgranny. I hate those plastic upside-down things too. So many things seem designed to defeat us!

MissAdventure Sat 17-Sept-22 11:01:26

I used to have nice slim, white hands.

I didn't do much with them, but I did manage to stop biting my nails in my late forties.
Now they look awful, red fingers (liver issues) and all bloated (fluid) and odd coloured.

I was quite surprised to see I match my red and green rug!

Lexisgranny Sat 17-Sept-22 11:07:24

MissAdventure oh the days of slender hands, I look down at distorted knuckles, bulging veins and wrinkles and can barely believe that they hands belong to me.

JaneJudge Sat 17-Sept-22 11:10:18

I take glucosamine and fish oil to help with joint pain. Well I say this, I buy the seven seas joint care that has a variety of things in but I think your thumb is a particular condition as my friend has it, can you ask the pharmacist? There is something you can take iirc

and flowers

I've always had massive ugly hands, your hands look lovely and I'm sure yours are lovely too, Lexisgranny

Miss Adventure my DH has terrible cramps which are relieved by quinine even though the medical profession says it doesn’t work. As you don’t want to take more tablets then like CrazyH I suggest tonic water which has quinine in it. Sorry you have such pain. We use our hands for so much.

MissAdventure Sat 17-Sept-22 11:19:18

I have heard good reports of tonic water, and it's the least harsh for my liver, I'd imagine, so I shall start with that first.

Gossamerbeynon1945 Sat 17-Sept-22 15:13:56

Do you think it could be hyperventilation. I have noticed that if I hyperventilate, I get cramp in my hands!

I had this on my middle finger of my right hand where I couldn’t get my the finder to go back up without prising it amidst some pain. I asked the physiotherapist who described it as trigger finger. I looked this up and did some exercises and after some long time, several months, I realised it had gone away. Not had it since. I think I got it from excessive hand weeding during lockdown.
