Do you buy/eat Spam?

I don’t because I don’t eat meat, but wondered if it is a popular food item?

I used to like Spam spread for my sandwiches. It was very tasty. I never gave much thought to its contents or level of unhealthiness. I just ate. Not sure if I would now though.

You're not wrong there - cooking it shows just how much fat, too, yuk!

I have discovered a brand of corned beef that is labelled low-fat, and it really is. Refrigerated and then thinly sliced with pickle or a tomato, it's a much better 'stand-by' than a tin of fatty Spam.

Odd you mentioning corned beef DH was just asking me the other day if there was a town called FraBentos where the Corned beef came from.
I remember a colleague who years ago tutted at us all eating meat in our sandwiches. I went up to the local town and she was in an alleyway "gobbling", a corned beef and tomato ketchup sandwich. She had to confess it was really her family who were vegetarians
We had corned beef hash I did not like it but remember as a student in the North East getting a potato, leek and meat pie which I liked until I was told it was corned beef.
Anyone else had fatherless stew or is it regional?grin

I honestly didn’t know people ate cold spam. I don’t fancy it myself, but am quite partial to it fried/grilled and to corned beef, hot or cold. It’s really tasty in a pie or hash, and this thread had me making a corned beef and tomato sandwich for lunch yesterday - it was delicious!

Not since the 1950s when it was part of the post war diet. I didn’t like it then,either.

My mother was an excellent, mostly, cook- from- scratch woman. A low point in my childhood meals were the times we got Spam fritters. I remember them being a bit slimy and gluey and very salty.
We also had Old Oak ham and whole tinned chickens occasionally and worst of all she cooked and pressed cows tongues... what a horrific smell.

We only eat meat when our daughters come round, we don't eat spam.

I buy spam for food pantry, as it is nonperishable tinned protein, on the list with tinned tuna and legumes.

I can appreciate that not everyone has means to cook legumes in a pot for hours. Legumes are excellent protein. I'm not so sure spam is 'excellent' protein, but some people like it, who am I to choose for others.

We always ate it cold - it was quite a revelation when at a friend's house I was given a slice of fried spam and loved it!

It is lovely fried or grilled in a crispy way with fried egg and fried tomatoes.Instead of bacon.
There is no visible fat in the tins of Spam at all, so wonder if posters are confusing with another product?
If cut very very thinly it is also nice cold in a sandwich.

I can remember having it at home during the austerity years when I was a small kid. Fried spam with chips and tinned peas was regarded as a full meal! We often had it on a sunday. No one could afford "proper" meat then. I still love spam fritters with a fry up. I dont pretend to be a foodie.

Well, I love Sainsburys chopped pork and ham! Has to be in a sandwich with Daddy's brown sauce,. Excuse me while I add it to my Sainsburys order this week......

My friends and I have a fried spam barm and a cup of tea every week from Vals van when we walk our dogs . Superb . Ask for it well done so all the fat has run out and it's a bit crispy. Don't knock it till you try it !!

That’s interesting Dickens. My husband suddenly decided he fancied some corned beef so I have ordered a tin of the low fat option on my next grocery delivery. I quite like corned beef but haven’t had it for years. May give it a try. I don’t dislike the taste of cold Spam, though I don’t eat it, but I find the smell of it cooking when himself decides to have some is revolting.

Ah, so you found it already!

I always put it straight in the 'fridge, for easier slicing. It's very dense so I had to find a really sharp knife.

Himself likes to put it on bake-at-home bread whilst it's still warm, with thinly sliced tomato.

He 'warmed up' some Spam in the microwave once as an alternative to frying it - I felt nauseous and had to clean and 'air' the microwave afterward. I think if he attempts to fry it, I'll desert him grin.
