Pj wearers taking children to school,

There used to be an old joke about opening the door in your pyjamas.

Does anyone remember those velour tracksuits of the 1980s?I had a set that could have passed for warm pjs, perhaps they should make a comeback.

I have a set (they were sold as pyjamas in M&S about 3 years ago) and whilst I wouldn't go out in them, when I wear them in winter I'm happy to answer the door in them the next day.

It was the husband who was playing away from home in Woman in a Dressing Gown.

As a child in the 50's, my Dad would never allow us to come down in the morning in our dressing gowns, and those habits die hard! I remember a film called "Woman in a Dressing Gown" (Anthony Quayle, I think, though I was too youg to see it) when the very title suggested to us a "lady" of low virtue!

So, what sort of pyjamas were on display? If like my sleep pyjamas I have no issue out walking dogs or children.

There is, to me, a clear and obvious difference between the clothes in your links, Norah . One is more suitable for the bedroom, and the other is not unlike a tracksuit or casual leggings and top combo.

The frilly nightie situation must have been embarrassing - I bet she got fully dressed every day after that .

Many years ago when I was a teenager, I remember an episode where Mrs Lark took her husband to the station and, on the way home, the car broke down. She had to get out of the car wearing a long nightdress, feather trimmed negligee and fluffy mule slippers. Her hair was in rollers with a chiffon scarf tied round her head.I remember being horrified on her behalf. At least she looked feminine and pretty, not ‘slovenly’

I'll be happy to judge them It's slovenly and lazy, sets a bad example to their children and is an eyesore for everyone else. Why on earth can't they just put some clothes on, after all trousers and tops only takes 2 minutes to get into. Heaven forbid we would expect them to wash their faces or brush their hair and actually make an effort to meet the world. If they can't manage to get dressed in the morning how on earth will they manage to run a household, cook meals, supervise their children's homework, and do all the hundreds of other things a parent has to do.

Our local supermarket would appear to agree with you, as they’ve posted a notice barring anyone from entering in ‘night attire’ !!

A friend drove her husband to work wearing a short frilly nightie. Dropped him off just as the shift changed and her car broke down surrounded by hundreds of workmen. She had to walk through them all to go and get her husband to help!

I agree with you icanhandtheback a social construct which we can use to criticise nonconformists.

I saw several younger parents etc in outfits like the short and T-shirt one at the school gates this summer. I never gave it a thought

I actually had 3 choices. One is a couple of posts further down. My point was that many are day clothing. One IS for inside the confines of home, IMO.

When there’s your choice of two above Norah, I think one sort would be less offensive to some parents.

oh come on icanhandthemback - I am sure you can spot PJs as well as anyone else.

Not always, Fleurpepper. I often see things labelled as pj tops which look perfectly reasonable to wear as part of a going out outfit. Similarly, I see teeshirts which look great for bed. And I certainly see some dresses which should probably only be worn to bed!
My point is, WHO determines what is nightwear? It seems to me to be a social construct which really only exists as long as the majority agree to it. WHO determines that it is a standard we should all adhere to? WHO is it hurting? Would it make any difference if you knew they were clean clothes donned after getting out of bed and after showering? What is it that offends? Many of the materials are identical to day clothes so what does it matter?
I am happy to abide by laws, try to be inoffensive in my language and wouldn't blaspheme because some people find that difficult, but I see no reason why I should adhere to society's rules as long as I am decent.
