Topic borrowed from MN.

My husband and I have never worn slippers since we were young children.

I doubt a fire pit is considered as normal?
No

AreWeThereYet Sun 02-Oct-22 17:05:45

For two months of the year we're the only house for streets around with no outside lights, reindeer, teddy bears, Father Christmases, etc (just our strings of tiny LED lights)

Heating 1 - 5 is a thermostat Doodledog. Each number means the heat goes up to a fixed temperature. We used to have heating with a 1 - 5 thermostat in the hall, not now we have a thermostat with temperatures on. However all our radiator thermostats have 1 - 5 on them.

We live in an old timber framed farmhouse, with a range cooker and everyone expects us to have an AGA or equivalent. All our neighbours have them.

We don't, we are on mains gas and electricity and we have a perfectly normal dual fuel cooker, gas/elctricity and I wouldn't have an AGA if you paid me.

It seems to me that an awful lot of of us do not have the same things, suggesting they are not so unusual not to have. Why, therefore do we perceive them as being essentials?

Sara1954 - Aga toast... Best toast ever. ?

Cabbie21 Sun 02-Oct-22 14:52:37

BBQ, fire- pit
Tumble dryer
Air fryer, though I might get one if I can make room.
Sky, Netflix etc
Alexa
Pets

But slippers and a dishwasher are items I would not be without.

I'm not sure what others consider normal, but we don't have anything Alexa/Echo, a fire pit or BBQ. We don't have a thermostat either. Our heating goes from 1-5, and I'm always a bit bemused when people say their house is at 19 degrees - I really can't envisage what it means.

Nannagarra Sun 02-Oct-22 13:47:11

Alexa
Echo dot
Ninja
Netflix
More than one tv and if I had my way…
Pressure cooker
A golden retriever any more, sadly

GagaJo Sun 02-Oct-22 13:12:39

Ah yes. No family photos around. I prefer original art on the walls.

paddyann54 Sun 02-Oct-22 11:43:35

Fanny we have a firepit, one of our GD's says it really finishes the weekend off sitting round the firepit chatting to Papa..what she means is she talks sometimes for hours and he doesn't get a word in edgeways
We gave our dishwasher away years ago .I like washing dishes .
There are no ornaments here ..nothing that gathers dust ,only a Budhha with candles infront of him .
no Alexa
not many kitchen gadgets ,I prefer to prep by hand though I do have a pressure cooker and microwave ,my blender was a wedding present and is still in daily use
We have just ONE TV ..after the saga of OH needing a TV in the kitchen ,he watched it once and decided he preffered the living room...so it was given to my Daughter and the sky extra room thingy cancelled.
We dont have a woodburning stove ...yet

JaneJudge Sun 02-Oct-22 11:37:27

any order of the chaos

cornergran Sun 02-Oct-22 11:35:06

There’s no

Air fryer
Pressure cooker
BBQ
Coffee maker
Patio heater
Pet. I’m sad we don’t have a dog now, Mr C’s decision with his sensible head on. Can’t have a cat as Mr C is allergic to them. I couldn’t care for a bird of any sort and rodents make me shudder.

Probably other things if I really think about it including a hot tub which our granddaughters and their mum seem to view as vital to their well-being.

nanna8 Sun 02-Oct-22 11:23:27

I’ve got most things but I don’t have a cake mixer- they take up too much room. I do have a small handheld one but it only does light batter. The dishwasher is a 2 drawer one which is ideal for us 2 as you can just use one drawer at a time and both if we have visitors. No dogs but a couple of little cats. No freezer except the one that goes with the fridge. We have 2 fridges- one outside for drinks.I don’t often wear slippers, usually just socks but I have got some somewhere, I think.

Sara1954 Sun 02-Oct-22 11:17:41

Agree about dishwasher, during lockdown we were a family of six without a dishwasher for months, because the engineers wouldn’t come out. Nearly drove us mad, piles and piles of washing up at the end of a long days work, nothing to do with being lazy.

We also don’t have a coffee maker, an air fryer, although my granddaughter thinks they’re the best things ever.

We only bought our first ever toaster about two years ago when we had the Aga taken out.

Chardy Sun 02-Oct-22 11:00:14

No slippers here (barefoot)
Or firepit (environmental no-no?)
Air-fryer
Dishwasher
Tumble drier
Big TV
BBQ

Witzend Sun 02-Oct-22 10:49:32

Air fryer. Tempted, but limited worktop space, so resisting.

As for dishwashers, I’m lazy enough to be very grateful for one of those, plus a dh who loads and unloads it, and puts it all away.
He doesn’t cook, though - fair division of labour chez us.

annsixty Sun 02-Oct-22 10:48:00

Oh, just one more, I don’t have a car which most would consider normal or even essential.

JackyB Sun 02-Oct-22 10:40:26

Coffee machine (we both can't stomach real coffee. We have a French press in case visitors want "proper" coffee)
Facebook
Netflix or the like
Pets

There are loads of things we wouldn't have if it was up to me, first and foremost the television.
