Do you like 'a hearty stew'?

I follow a few cooking sites and, this morning, a recipe for 'a hearty stew' appeared in my inbox.

My heart sank. Not sure whether it is a throw back to school dinners, my mum's cooking or what.

I do sausage casserole, braised steak, coq au vin etc etc but the thought of hearty stews really depress me.

Anyone else?

I'm making a 'hearty estofado' - just googled the Spanish word for stew smile

The green lentils, chickpeas & chorizo are simmering away as I speak - stew didn't sound right!

You can't beat a good stew with dumplings (that's it I'm hungry now) just thinking about it

I made one on Monday in the slow cooker. Tin of vegetable soup, oxo cube, onion, carrots, celery, parsnip, potatoes, all diced. Mixed herbs, dash of red wine, bay leaf. Diced stewing steak. Thickened before serving with dash of gravy granuals and stir well.

Also not sure what a hearty stew is exactly, is it like a casserole?

I do all mine inmy slow cooker and freeze the remainder. Not sure if they could be called hearty stews. I love dumplings but I've never really been able to make them properly they always fall apart.

It's a stew and dumplings kind of day here!
Not cold but wet and windy

Thank you I’ll give that a go.

Eating at 6pm?

Doing one today in slow cooker. Trying gluten free dumplings. Bet they will be like bullets. ?

I don't know what recipe you're going to use but I found this one which (apparently) has good reviews, Whitewave

Let us know how they turn out and what recipe you use.

I make a lot of stews, I don't really like them but they are easy and economical - and husband enjoys them. But we can't afford to eat any other way.

I am emptying our freezer I have venison to use up so I will be making a rich casserole with it at the weekend.

Turkey Blanquette is good made with leftover turkey, served with rice.

Turkey stew’s a must-have here, NanKate, by about the 28th December, Loads of veg, any leftover stuffing and gravy, etc.

We once had guests with 3 dogs staying, so with our own that made four. How I wish I’d had a camera when stripping the turkey that year - turned around to see all 4 dogs sitting in a row, looking the picture of good manners and hope!
(Yes, they did all get some turkey.)
All four long gone now, ?

What I’d give to have a bowl of my mum’s chicken/turkey casserole that she would make after Xm** So delicious with carrots, potatoes, herbs all thrown in. I could eat a bowl now. ??????

Many thanks Blondiescot. I was ?that you’d provide a recipe, knowing that it’d be a good ‘un.
Happy days and comfort food.

I like to put short rib and chunky veg into my slow cooker and leave for a few hours. Thicken and serve with mash. Yum!

I love dumplings in a stew too. But, Slimming World says no to them or syn them. I don't make them any more!

JaneJudge Tue 04-Oct-22 21:54:41

oh good smile

MissAdventure Tue 04-Oct-22 21:53:26

Yes, she was fine.
The op was a success. smile

She had an older foal, so I presume it may have been the birth that had left her with problems, but all was well, and the foal was beautiful, too.

JaneJudge Tue 04-Oct-22 21:41:53

was the mare ok? I've not watched but now I'm worried about it

MissAdventure Tue 04-Oct-22 21:39:22

She was so placid, wasn't she?
I think I'll find some veggie stew recipes, though. smile
All this talk of necks, shins and pipes... well...

I do love a chicken casserole, though.

Callistemon21 Tue 04-Oct-22 21:36:02

It was her womb, a uterine prolapse. Mares don't often survive that. The vet did really well. She seemed quite old to have just had a foal.

MissAdventure Tue 04-Oct-22 21:28:28

Oh me too! shock
I didn't have the sound up, so I wasn't sure what that thing was that came out.
