Thanks Sarah. When someone chooses to stay at home and claim benefits and sniggers about it, the person who’s paid the tax which funds the benefits doesn’t find it funny. How many on here paid the top rate of tax I wonder?

Soaring heating costs, what's your plan.
(328 Posts)I'm not sure if this has been covered elsewhere but anyone dared put on their heating yet or like me putting it off until absolutely necessary. We will start by layering up our clothes and a throw over our legs in the evening. I'm currently wearing 2 pairs of socks as I cannot bear cold feet. We never have our heater on in our bedroom as I cannot sleep in a stuffy room. When our bungalow was built it was all electric and remains so, as gas hasn't reached our village. Tumble drier is in retirement for as long as is possible.

That is good to know doodledog, I could do with one at work. Do they get too hot though if you are moving around?
They definitely keep you warm. Whether that's too warm or not depends on all sorts of things, though. They are like a thermal vest, but less 'grannyish'
. More like a tee shirt, really.
well he still pays it, it means we get healthcare and all sorts of benefits through his job too. It doesn't mean I want the withdrawal of UC and NHS etc for other people. It doesn't mean I don't think people should be paid enough to meet their bills
It's not difficult to be compassionate
I work in a low paid job. Maybe I should be shot so he can service a higher paid woman

I'm on my feet at work a lot (sometimes not) sometimes I'm red hot, sometimes cold> Menopause isn't helping. I will give them a go
I'm not surprised either VS as I've heard people with these views before. It's fine for them to think what they want as long as they don't start being condescending and awfully judgemental and unkind.
How many paid the top rate of tax? Who knows and who cares? It's between us and the tax man, not for public discussion. It's not even good manners to discuss such things.
I just looked at the cost of the before/after school care in my local school district in the US.
Before school $9.50 daily
After school $18.50 daily
For a 4 week month, that extra cost is now $560 a month just for before and after care through the school. Private after care costs more.
Those hours are limited to 6 - 8 am and 3 - 6 pm.
Where are those kids going to go in the evenings when the parents are needing to work a second job in order to pay for increased cost of heating? Who is going to feed them and put them to bed? How much will it cost to pay for childcare after hours?
If only "get a second job" was a simple solution, especially for single parent families or families who did not have the luxury of family to help with childcare even if the parent could afford to pay for daycare.
Doodledog I have some of those in different colours
Also the leggings!
I was keeping quiet about them, but since you mentioned it... I haven't needed them so far.
He’s not on here though is he Jane? How many on here, having their say, were used to seeing 45% of their earnings, plus NI, disappearing and then have someone snigger about having been on the receiving end?
Low wage jobs make the world go around.
Most of us get up in the morning, we'll let's choose 1 of the things we may do.
Eat a piece of toast
OK relatively simple and easy right?
But thousands of people on low wages made that happen.
I mean TOAST
People on minimum wage working on farms to grow crops and breeding animals. People turning those crops and animal products into ingredients. People turning those ingredients into bread and margarine. People oackaging them. People delivering those products. People working in shops to stock then supply them to you.. minimum wage jobs.
Thats without getting into maintaining the roads or the vehicles. Maintaining the health of the workers. Cleaning up after then... it goes on and on because thousands of low wage workers enabled you to eat toast.
I appreciate my toast
I don’t thing Violet was sniggering GSM you chose your career and the level of your personal childcare. Not all of us wanted or want the lifestyle that working all hours in a demanding job supports.
Some of us have or are comfortable in our contribution to a career that succours others as well as ourselves whilst settling for time with our children, a smaller house and a less flash car.

I keep looking out for the leggings, but they only ever seem to have them in size 6 or size 26.
I bought a cheap set from eBay (top and leggings) and they were rubbish. I'm using them as pyjamas.

45% of their earnings over £150k, I think you'll find. Just as well you weren't actually working on the finance itself, isn't it. That would have gone terribly wrong.
GSM I may not pay a lot of tax but I do understand how it works.
No one pays 45% on all of their earnings
The tax bands are seperate
No one pays tax on the first £12,500 a year they earn.
Theý pay 20% on the earnings between £12,500 and just over £50,000
It's 40% between just over £50,000 and £150,000
Then 45% on eveeything after that
I'm worried I'll have to ask him to get involved. He is sitting opposite but he's watching newsnight
Indeed so, quite a lot of money - plus NI.
Mind you wrt newsnight, Boris Johnson's Dad is on now saying Jacob Rees Mogg needs to get involved so I don't think now is the right time for him to join or involve him in Gransnet
Don’t bother Jane, I’m off to bed.
I only laughed at you GSM
You know very little about my life really yet feel qualified to stand in judgement over me because my earning potential meant it was better for me to stay at home with my children
I've tried very hard to word that carefully because I do not judge working mothers and I think happy healthy children are achieved in many ways
I never hit the 45% band. Just 41% for me. Luckily, I managed to avoid my heart being turned to ice and any compassion I had being surgically removed. Guess that doesn't happen for everyone.
In the UK it's considered bad manners and rude to ask about other people's finances. Perhaps it's ok where you are GSM, but we find it strange when people demand to know our earnings bracket.
My business, is my business. Literally. If others want to volunteer information about themselves, they should not be attacked for it because everyone decides their own course.
What we need to understand is that while people earning enough to reach the 45% tax bands are comedabke and obviously fought hard to get there, not everyone can because someone has to do every job in every tax bracket
There is no choice
A society of very successful people would crumble. The same reason that of we ever needed to colonise another continent or planet apart from doctors and those able to lead... we would need the thousands able to get their hands dirty and build a society from the ground up
Oh amd educators
Important people lol
