What would you order?

I think I had brains in Spain last time or possibly France. There used to be a terrific French restaurant in Soho that an old boss of mine used to take me to - can't remember its name - where they did tête de veau that included brains! Some people's idea of a nightmare, but I thought it was delicious. they do still have brains in menus in France, but don't often see them over here!

We went to Paris for a few days at the height of nouvelle cuisine. Stayed in a very smart hotel with the evening meal included. Our faces must have been a picture when the silver salver lid was removed and there was a tiny little one bite portion and the next courses were all the same size. We went out after and found a McDonald’s still open!
The portions are much bigger in the Midlands than the south east.

I always order something I know I'll like.

I don't want to waste money on something I might not enjoy.

missdeke I sometimes order a children's portion if the normal adult serving is too big, most restaurants are happy to do that.

We did find a lovely pub in Corfe that did us a child's portion of fish and chips, and at another pub we just had a starter and a dessert, so we did manage to work things out. Huge portions just seem so daunting on the plate.

As my family have grown up and I am now a widow on my one, I totally change what I eat when I go out. Not worth doing a roast for one and too much hassle at times so a very good roast dinner with a variety of vegetables and importantly good gravy is often my choice. I enjoy duck as a treat and used to love having scallops and good quality fish and chips if we were on the coast. If it is an unexpected trip out it will usually be something I haven t made recently, or something that is a great faff to make with lots of pots and pans and can sit enjoying it whilst knowing I dont have to wash up!

If Dover Sole is on the menu then that's my choice. Followed by a nice dessert, pavlova or creme brulee.

Like you Nanna8 when in a restaurant or pub I tend to order things which I enjoy but don't make at home, such as my favourite and chips and a lovely pudding - Eton Mess.

Mine would be lobster or crab,preferably in France,but here in England , good fish and chips, by the sea.In a restaurant,scampi ,few chips and salad,followed by Irish coffee.

I look for things I wouldn't normally (or have ever) cooked but that I am at least familiar with so I know what to expect. We went for a late lunch at a local pub recently and I had ox cheeks in a really beautiful gravy. Melt in the mouth gorgeous.

Try to order something I don't cook generally.im a very good cook so shoot myself in foot really! Extravagant puds are my secret pleasure!

Yes dustyangel in restaurants, not sure if you can buy to cook at home.

Whitebait is generally available frozen and ready to cook in all supermarkets.

Offal - don't cook it at home much apart from liver and kidneys, but brains and sweetbreads that I have never cooked myself. Used to enjoy heart as well - people don't seem to eat that much nowadays.

I like heart as well. Usually buy a complete one, quarter it and remove the hard bits. Then bag into 4 portions ready chopped and freeze. ideal for knocking together a casserole in the slow cooker.

Sliced (cooked) heart is good for a sandwich. I would defy anyone to not mistake it for high quality and tasty beef slices.

More often than not, I’d order fish because my husband isn’t too keen on it and I love it BUT I don’t fancy breaded or deep fried fish.

I very rarely eat out but when I do I only have a main course and a pudding, three courses is too much for me. We don't eat at 'posh' restaurants and I hate being presented with a decorative heap of ingredients in the centre of a plate. Give me a proper plate of food anytime.

I can't eat hot spicy foods or rich sauces, but I love a plate of freshly cooked Fish & Chips followed by any pudding, I love 'em all! I also like Pie 'n' Mash but have yet to find anywhere local that serves it.

If I'm being stupid I eat a trigger food, knowing I'll spend the next 3-4 hours in excruciating pain, but feeling lso fed up with having to avoid all my favourite foods. So I'd go for duck, lamb or mac and cheese. Otherwise it is chicken or fish...sighs.

A roast dinner with all the trimmings as I live alone and don't make them that often now.

Nearly always fish as my husband (sorry I don’t do the OH, DH, DP thing!) doesn’t like it so we never have it at home unless he’s out! ?

My sister and I went on holiday together for the first time in 60 years this year and decided to eat out every day for the week. We had some lovely meals but they were all so HUGE!! One day we both ordered a chicken and leek pie with seasonal veg, we both decided no spuds as there was pastry, thank goodness we did each pie was about one and a half inches deep and 7 inches diameter, lovely food but a ridiculous size.

Why are they banned? You can often get frozen whitebait in Aldi - coated and ready to oven cook. But, as per normal for that store, supplies are erratic. We can get them over at "The Nets" in Hastings. There is one fish shop (cannot remember the name) which now does mail order.

I always have a starter as we don’t often have those at home. I love sea food. My favourite meal would be scallops followed by lobster. I never eat puddings. I’m really disappointed if we go somewhere and the only fish choices are smothered in cream as I can’t eat cream or milk. I’d never choose pizza or burgers, I always think they are for children. If I have to have fish and chips I will and I’ll probably enjoy it but it never seems like a proper restaurant meal somehow.
