What would you order?

If you go out to a general type of restaurant ( rather than Italian, Thai, Japanese etc.) what sort of food is your favourite to order? I tend to order stuff I wouldn’t make at home like duck, crème brûlée etc ( too hard for me to make !) If that is not available I go for something with nice vegetables or anything with eggplants.

Usually a fish dish. It depends what’s on offer really.

Same as you nanna8, something I do t make at home if poss.
To be honest I dont find the food out much to right home about these days, so I generally dont expect much.
Before covid we we taken to a very posh vegan restaurant in Cheshire. Frequented by the football wags.
Hugely expensive, 12 or more courses (??) Lots of explanations about the dish before it arrived, (why?).
Food was fine but really, what a palava!

Right = write

I agree with you Nanna8.. if I go to a British restaurant.. then I will usually always order something I find more difficult to cook at home.. or something I can't afford to buy ...

A pudding!

If I am stuck about which dish to order in the mains, I will be swayed by the addition of decent veg...not peas!

We don't go out very often and I'm a keen home cook, I would also usually tend to opt for something that I wouldn't normally cook at home.

Mussels in cream wine and garlic..plus crusty bread or chips. Unfortunately our local Loch Finn closed.

A starter and a pud!
I find main courses are too big for me so I tend to skip them out.
I try to find something new to try on the menu, usually veggie though I don't like aubergine much.

Whitebait is a favourite that I wouldn't cook at home.
Pud would be either coffee or chocolate-based - OH doesn't like either of those so again, wouldn't cook at home.

Yes same here, usually fish but something I wouldn't normally have at home, even Fish & Chips as I only have that done in the oven/airfryer at home and deep fried definitely taste different? .

Redhead56 Mon 10-Oct-22 13:04:40

Starter and dessert usually for me main courses are too much. I think in posh restaurants they talk a load of spiel to dress up very basic food to justify the prices. I avoid restaurants like that because I can cook and I am not impressed by image.

Fish and fish as MrJ doesn’t eat it, so rarely cooked at home, no pud as I don’t have a sweet tooth.
I love whitebait too lixy.

Farzanah Mon 10-Oct-22 13:22:22

Chips with anything! Don’t cook em at home.

Kim19 Mon 10-Oct-22 13:25:17

Anything that's imaginative containing ingredients that I've never heard of. However, never spicy.

Helenlouise3 Mon 10-Oct-22 13:25:43

A fish pie as I rarely make it at home. I rarely order fish on it's own as it's usually overcooked for me.

ShazzaKanazza Mon 10-Oct-22 13:43:40

I don’t get a lot of choice as I’m coeliac but if there is duck on the menu I would always choose that. I’m always just pleased if I can find something that isn’t just a salad.

nanna8 Mon 10-Oct-22 13:50:16

I really disliked the very tiny nouveau cuisine they used to serve up. Thankfully most others must have agreed because mostly we get pretty large servings at restaurants these days, too large sometimes .

Namsnanny Mon 10-Oct-22 14:04:20

That was one of the problems with the 12 or possibly more courses we had to sit through nanna8.
Tiny portions of nice food, but then a long wait for the next round!
They didnt call it nouveau cuisine, but that's what it amounted to.

If there's a carvery, then that's for me. If not I'll usually order steak or gammon.

Greyduster Mon 10-Oct-22 14:13:51

Lamb in any form available, but particularly a lamb Henry. I had it last in a lovely pub in Northumberland and it was beyond delicious. Trouble is GS wanted to try and bit (he was having duck) and then son in law decided he’d like to try a bit too, (but I got to try his tournedos Rossini)! I was rather glad DD didn’t eat meat or there might not have been much left for me!

YorkLady Mon 10-Oct-22 14:27:15

I love the tasting menu. Lots of little plates with a variety of dishes.
Going to a restaurant is a great social occasion for us, so I don’t mind the wait between the courses.

dustyangel Mon 10-Oct-22 14:33:22

Can you still get whitebait in England JaxJacky? They are banned in Portugal although you used to be able to get the frozen ones, not sure if you still can.

grannyrebel7 Mon 10-Oct-22 14:37:40

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a lamb Henry?

crazyH Mon 10-Oct-22 14:38:55

Rump steak with peppercorn sauce, chips and vegs

I am reading this while enjoying a delicious bowl of soup in our local community café.
It was called curried sweet potato but is just mildly spicy. Thick but whizzed and with the addition of cashew nuts and pimento.
Served with sourdough bread and butter.
I volunteer here this afternoon so I am fed for free.
Out at restaurants, I usually have little option as I am a vegetarian.
At last most places have something other than quiche.
