Not a pop at Norman Wisdom,
as I have enjoyed all his films including
"There was a crooked man",which is NOT in the box set.
I still have to visit the Isle of Mann and Deal in Kent.
I have come into contact with a few Albanians and none of them are aware of who Norman Wisdom was.
Why he WAS so famous, is that the King of Albania would only allow his comedy into his country, showing the little man getting the better of the bigger man.
Although there is a statue of him in Albania,
he has been on Albania postage stamps and also wore a football top at the Albania v England football match's back in 2001.
Times have moved on,like most of have.

Somehow this media fascination has passed me by confused

It wasn't the King of Albania thst showed his films, but the communist governmen. He was famous amongst the generation who grew up under communism, but not as Norman Wisdom, he was Mr Pitkin.

I suppose many people think ‘in history’ and if people want to refer to his popularity in Albania which I guess is quite rare what’s the harm ?
Very random
Why does it bother you so much ?

Can't remember the last time I ever saw his name in any media context. Not to mention the fact that I never found him funny in the slightest.

I haven't seen his name in the media for years, never found him funny and by all accounts he was an unpleasant man who was too handy with women.

Callistemon21 Sat 15-Oct-22 09:42:54

That was an unpleasant post, anyway, Grandmabatty.

Do the media keep saying this, infoman? I hadn't heard his name mentioned in the media for years. He used to visit friends near here, seen filling up his large Rolls Royce at a local garage quite often.

I have never heard any media even mention Norman Wisdom for many many years

I remember him on Desert Island Discs. Of his eight song choices, five were his own grin

Norman Wisdom was adored in Albania, how wonderful that a country took such pleasure in his comedy.
He was a lovely, warm and humble man who gave joy to millions.
Infoman I think there are bigger problems in the country now than the media view on Albania and Norman Wisdom.

During the nineties he often used to visit our pub/restaurant with his entourage. His large tour bus would be parked in the lay by opposite as it was too big for our car park entrance.

He was a huge show off and would annoy the staff by getting under their feet, pretending to play golf/snooker/table tennis - you name it!

The customers loved him though and he was always happy to sign autographs.

A strange post, but fascinating. I remember Norman Wisdom so well, and one of my sons in particular adored him. I wrote and told Norman and he sent us a lovely little thank you note and a signed photo. I found his films very funny. But I did notice when Norman grew older he became somewhat ...er, I'm trying to find the words without being unkind, ....a bit full of himself. I think he developed dementia, sadly.

In his time, he was, but I haven't heard any media references to this for - well too far to remember back. 10 years maybe, 15?
