When I was young my Mum was always going into coffee shops and cafes for a coffee and I used to think she was wasting money when you could easily make one at home ( we didn’t have instant, it was ‘proper’coffee) . Guess what ? Now I have a coffee out at least 4 or 5 times a week and now I understand where she was coming from ! It has to be a good one, I am a coffee snob as are most Melburnians. It is getting very expensive, however and is now usually $5 for a small cup so I might have to cut back - still it’s better than cigs or booze I suppose.

I think I'm worth £2.50. smile
I can make coffee at home, but I can't get a crowd milling around my flat, so I can watch them and ponder about their lives.

I meet different sets of friends for coffee about 3 times a month. I uses to have a coffee out sometimes if I was food shopping but I am trying to be more careful now and saving the pennies.

I have tea if the coffees too expensive.
No cake.

I enjoy a meet up with my friend in one of the local garden centres. We are not coffee drinkers, although I love the smell of fresh coffee , so it's usually tea and a nice scone, with butter and jam, delicious. Sometimes, when its colder, we have hot chocolate and cake!
Also a nice place to browse for plants, C*******s gifts etc.

We go out for coffee most days of the week. Our lovely Italian chap has just dropped his price to £1.90 for a cappuccino. If we are out for a cycle ride then coffee and cake stop is a must. I read today that Waitrose is bringing back it’s free coffee next month so that will be a bonus

A cat cafe has recently opened in Solihull near to where I live. Being a cat lover, although I haven't got one now, its sheer pleasure to visit and have a snack with a lovely drink. There are 10 cats of all sorts under a year old and its so good to watch their playful games or snoozing awayin their beds oblivious of everyone around them. I feel comfortable going on my own too as its such a friendly environment so I have found the perfect coffee stop.

Waitrose are reintroducing free drinks for myWaitrose customers from November 7th.
T&C apply!

I wonder if they'll get the roasting that Asda have had?

V3ra Sun 16-Oct-22 16:34:28

If you have a Dobbies garden centre nearby then their loyalty card is a good investment.
It's £12 a year and you get two free hot drinks a month.
You also get other benefits as well but it's the drinks that sold it for me ☕

SueDonim Sun 16-Oct-22 16:42:52

Don’t forget the free hot drink and a cake for two for your birthday gift from Dobbie’s, V3ra! grin

My daily coffee goes with my daily walk, can't have one without
the other. Coffee is about 1.60€ here but its not bucket size.

I know I am in a minority but I find the smell of coffee makes me nauseous. I can't stand the way coffee shops allow this awful stench to spread out into the street so have to rush past them.

In my opinion coffee drinking should only be done by consenting adults in private.

So much more to coffee out than just a drink. Sometimes, I’ll get one just to have time to work out if something’s a good buy (using the Martin Lewis rule) before I decide, or simply to extend time out of the house if I’m on my own. When DH was ill, I introduced him to coffee out - and told him ‘it’s the grey pound that keeps some of these places open’. He had to agree.

But then I am not a food snob or a coffee afficionado

In their intro OP refers to themself as a "coffee snob". No disrespect to coffee afficionados. People are entitled to spend their money and their time as they wish. I was simply making the point that I have no special interest in what I eat or drink. So I do not study the finer points of coffee or cakes. However I do consider that many of the popular chains serve drinks which are grossly overpriced.

I think my life is punctuated by times of having coffee breaks in various locations.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Sun 16-Oct-22 17:25:24

My life is coffee with occasional work breaks.

Sometimes I have coffee, sometimes I have tea.

It’s just so nice to be out amongst other folks and having had a base here for 50 years there is always someone I know or knew family members to chat with.

TerriBull Sun 16-Oct-22 18:19:20

I had a really bad coffee habit once, but no longer I'm glad to say. I put that down to having found just the right coffee pod to not want to buy a coffee when out, although it's always an independent but occasionally, just as well given the price!

HowVeryDareYou Sun 16-Oct-22 18:31:57

I go for coffee/cake only when I meet up with a friend (fortnightly, on average) but I eat out a lot (pubs), usually 3 or 4 times a week

MissAdventure Sun 16-Oct-22 19:21:30

I used to be able to spend four or five hours, here, "nipping" down town.

So many people I bumped into and had a coffee with.

I'd be awash with it, by the time I came home.

My local Wetherspoons which is a pleasant building does very good value coffee with a view of passers by. It doesn’t feel like a pub in the mornings.
My DH and I do go out for coffee and I also go with friends but it’s often as a cheaper alternative to a meal.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 16-Oct-22 20:36:53

It’s a social thing going out for coffee or tea, you could make it at home cheaper and for some better but by going out you are meeting people and surrounded by life going on
