When I was young my Mum was always going into coffee shops and cafes for a coffee and I used to think she was wasting money when you could easily make one at home ( we didn’t have instant, it was ‘proper’coffee) . Guess what ? Now I have a coffee out at least 4 or 5 times a week and now I understand where she was coming from ! It has to be a good one, I am a coffee snob as are most Melburnians. It is getting very expensive, however and is now usually $5 for a small cup so I might have to cut back - still it’s better than cigs or booze I suppose.

I bloody wish I could still manage it.

JaneJudge Sun 16-Oct-22 20:41:25

My Mum never went to cafes and I don't really either, I do go to the pub though confused

Same Jane friends are met either in their house or ours, out for a meal occasionally or, in the local ?

Esmay Sun 16-Oct-22 20:49:40

I long for a decent cup of tea out -Costa's tea has to the worst that I've ever tasted .
If I can get to the larger shopping centre then I love tea at Patisserie Valerie .
I love coffee , but it doesn't love me .
I can get great coffee locally and I risk one when shopping .
And enjoy a cake .

meeting people in whichever suits you is healthy smile

Don’t forget the free hot drink and a cake for two for your birthday gift from Dobbie’s, V3ra! grin

Ooh yes! My friend and I had some nice cakes back in April and May, I had forgotten about that! ????

I’ll always remember when we suddenly realised that we could afford to have a coffee when we were out. A friend of ours who didn’t have children and was better off than us used to take us out for a pub meal once a year so the children would know what it was like to eat out. And then the pandemic hit and we stopped going out altogether.

MissAdventure Sun 16-Oct-22 21:08:36

I can remember me and my mum having to share a pot of tea for one, because we didn't have enough money for one each.

It was still nice to sit and rest, though. smile

I do not like tea and never drink it so it is coffee for me each time.

Thanks for letting me know that Waitrose is starting that again. At my local, the coffee machine etc was close to the entrance so people would drive in, park, grab a coffee and run. I think the security guard may be more on the ball this time.

Vice versa in my childhood. I don’t think I went into a pub until we attended a wedding when I was about 14. Mum and dad shared a bottle of cider at home a couple of times a year. grin

We occasionally went with mum for a treat to an Italian ice cream parlour. She’d have what I guess would be a cappuccino today and we’d have cones. The highlight was when she let us have some of the froth from her coffee on top of the ice cream. Heaven! ☕️ ?

One of the great pleasures in life.

I started at the age of 11 taking myself into Birmingham and going for an orange squash and a choc cake with a face on the top.

I graduated in my teens to going to a coffee bar with my friends for a frothy coffee in a glass cup and sauce.

I now at the age of 76 go to a lovely Italian cafe in my small town for a strong cappuccino and if DH is with me we share an almond croissant nicely warmed. I still go on my own and take my Kindle.

nanna8 Sun 16-Oct-22 23:41:56

Nooo- not that awful American Starbucks stuff- not many here like that.

kircubbin2000 Mon 17-Oct-22 09:03:30

Our local cafe has put the prices up .An Americano and a croissant was over£5.00.I think the cappuccino was £2.90.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 17-Oct-22 09:13:24

We only have independent coffee/tea shops on our High Road, I will not venture in to Costa or Starbucks I don’t mind Cafe Nero at a push.

Some Waterstones book stores have a coffee shop in them, they do scrummy cakes and a good coffee and tea.

Joseanne Mon 17-Oct-22 09:25:23

My local coffee shop is at a Mill by a river and they offer dog biscuits for the hounds. I go twice a week after a long walk. The only annoying thing is that they don’t open until 10 am which to me seems very late. Or maybe they think people will spend more on the cakes once they have worked up an appetite!

Redhead56 Mon 17-Oct-22 09:27:40

Sometimes as children we would be treated to cake and soft drink with our mum down town in a department store. I only like the occasional Gold coffee at home I never drink tea elsewhere I only like my tea.
I never go out for cake and coffee if I eat cake it’s only at the weekend and made by myself or my family as we have the same taste.
If I go out for a drink it’s a walk to the pub a train to the rugby club or a restaurant. That is pleasure to me just chilling with a drink no time table just relaxing.

MawtheMerrier Mon 17-Oct-22 09:33:47

I do like going out for a coffee (and a piece of cake) but wonder at all those people who think it is trendy to carry a disposable cuppa from Starbucks or Costa wherever they go. The influence of US sitcoms of the 80’s and 90’s perhaps?
I used to buy a coffee to have on the train when I visiting DH in hospital or indeed going anywhere and then I realised how it was mounting up so now I have an insulated drinks bottle and make myself a coffee in my Nespresso machine before I leave the house , it also comes in handy in traffic jams!

annodomini Mon 17-Oct-22 09:48:34

Sadly, I discovered, after years of drinking coffee, that I was having a miserable reaction to it. So, for the last 50+ years, it's been tea ( black, but not too black!) for me. I enjoy a hot chocolate, though the quality can, all too often, turn out to be disappointing. Nowadays, I usually meet friends by arrangement, rather than go by myself.

nanna8 Mon 17-Oct-22 10:03:18

I had to cut down on the number. When I was working I used to get heart palpitations caused by too much caffeine. Mind you, I’m talking 6 or 7 cups during a working day. Now I have a max of 2 .Funny because tea doesn’t affect me like that, I guess there is less caffeine in tea ?

Norah Mon 17-Oct-22 11:29:57

I have an insulated bottle, make my coffee at home, take it in the car if I must go out. I'm a happy hermit, content at home - with coffee.

I'm not content paying for something I can cook myself. cafe cupcake

MawtheMerrier Mon 17-Oct-22 11:36:28

My thinking entirely Norah ! brew

ParlorGames Mon 17-Oct-22 11:36:36

We don't deliberately go out just for a coffee/cake but if we are out and about and fancy a cuppa we do try to frequent the smaller, independent cafes over the likes of Costa(plenty) and Star(cost a lot of)Bucks.

MawtheMerrier Mon 17-Oct-22 11:38:30

Plenty early enough for Rosie and me!
Anything earlier constitutes breakfast! grin

Meet up once a week with brother for a coffee otherwise very rarely visit coffee shops. Prices have gone up considerably. Have always wondered how so many young folk can afford daily take-away coffees yet complain about not affording to save for a house.
