“What are grandmothers supposed to wear?”

I sometimes read posts by the American blogger, ‘The Accidental Icon’, and I thought this latest one about what older women might wear, was interesting -

Our roles are fluid and change throughout our lives. Mothers, lovers, married or not, workers, professionals, caregivers, retired or unemployed sometimes it’s hard to remember that who we are inside is someone who transcends roles even though it may be hard to find her when the roles she plays become all-consuming. It seems in older life we get the gift of re-discovering the person we may have lost or found as our roles change, or we can become someone we never knew before

Whatever they flipping want to wear

fairfraise Tue 18-Oct-22 19:25:33

Whatever they like, surely.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Nice loose, comfy Crimplene frocks, obviously, with a pinny on top, and pink bedroom slippers with those fluffy bits. Harvest Festival knickers.

Clothes. Preferably clothes suitable for the prevailing weather, if outside.

She wears light grey designer loafer shoes in the "softest suede" to go to the pumpkin patch and chase after her granddaughter.

I wore black wellies by Dunlop.

Is this why I'm not an "influencer"? ?

This: Not all of us are grandparents, some by choice and others not, so I try to not talk about my grandchildren incessantly and to wear what people may not expect a grandparent to wear.

Everyone have reasons -- we don't have to "look a part".

How we appear is a choice. Everyone chooses differently.

I thought it was a good article.

I'm intending to drown myself in a sea of beige crimpoline.
Slax (the kind with an elastic waist and a sewn in knife edge crease down the front)
A Pac-a-mac; in short, the lot, and not even a gaily coloured scarf to brighten it up.

Forsythia Tue 18-Oct-22 19:47:24

They are selling those slax in M&S this year revamped for the younger market!

MissAdventure Tue 18-Oct-22 19:48:27

They’ve got full elastic waists and the stitching down the front. ? I confess I bought some and they are mega comfy!

MissAdventure Tue 18-Oct-22 19:54:43

I tried to post a photo but no good at it.

MissAdventure Tue 18-Oct-22 20:03:35

I should have a look, but I'm worn out.

M0nica Tue 18-Oct-22 20:04:36

Whatever I do, I am myself. I have never defined myself by any of the roles this Blogger mentions. Come to that I wear the clothes I like and feel comfortable in.

Looking round at older women in the street and elsewhere, our styles of dress are far more variable than any younger group.

Forsythia Tue 18-Oct-22 20:09:18

Me too. I found that when I retired I got rid of loads of clothes that I just would never wear again. Now, I dress for comfort but with a nod to looking fashionable if I can. Comfort is key though.

Interesting article, thank you.

I try to set an example for my Gchn in that my clothes are practical and made from natural fibres.
GS was looking at photos a while ago and I was wearing the same dress as was in one of them. He was astonished that the dress was older than him - and then more so when I said I'd bought it in a charity shop, He did defend himself by pointing out that he would look a bit silly in his baby clothes!

My grandmother wore a wrap around pinny ( though she lived with tow daughters who did all the work ) metal curlers in her hair and usually to cap it all a hairnet.

Redhead56 Tue 18-Oct-22 22:13:17

My grandma's wore those wrapped around pinafores like a uniform everyday. My mum and mum in law wore them only when they prepared food.

We are all unique individuals whether grans nans or not. I don't like stereotypes I wear what I want.

I am old enough by now to know what suits me. I like comfortable and casual coordinated clothes if we go out I wear something smarter.

Mogsmaw Tue 18-Oct-22 22:42:23

I’ve just made myself a shocking-pink corduroy pinafore. DH said it was “pinker than he expected”, not pinker than I did!
Being invisible is great! We can wear what we want.
