“What are grandmothers supposed to wear?”

I sometimes read posts by the American blogger, ‘The Accidental Icon’, and I thought this latest one about what older women might wear, was interesting -

Our roles are fluid and change throughout our lives. Mothers, lovers, married or not, workers, professionals, caregivers, retired or unemployed sometimes it’s hard to remember that who we are inside is someone who transcends roles even though it may be hard to find her when the roles she plays become all-consuming. It seems in older life we get the gift of re-discovering the person we may have lost or found as our roles change, or we can become someone we never knew before

How about black dress and full wrap around floral pinafore with black matronly button strap flat shoes?

I don’t like crimplene, never have and I don’t think they even have it here anyway. I just wear the usual uniform of jeans and t shirt or sweater depending on the weather. If we go out at night I wear better jeans and better t shirts or even a skirt and top. Nothing different to what I wore before really though miniskirts and crop tops are not on ( eeeuugh, lovely on a 70 year old,not )

We were visiting my aunt years ago, 1983ish, and looking through photos.

Auntie Pam said to her grown up daughter "F* me, Sylv, you've still got the same hair style as you had in 1968!"

Callistemon21 Tue 18-Oct-22 22:53:08

Same style as when I was 18 (I found an old photo)
Just slightly larger sizes.

Soooooo boring

MissAdventure Tue 18-Oct-22 22:51:37

Good thinking.
I like your style!

Just wear it with beige Crimplene trousers

Callistemon21 Tue 18-Oct-22 22:50:16

No, you don't!

MissAdventure Tue 18-Oct-22 22:49:15

I need a more grown up t shirt collection.

I don't think I ever lost myself ?
They're all aspects of me.

or we can become someone we never knew before
? what drivel

Forsythia

They’ve got full elastic waists and the stitching down the front. ? I confess I bought some and they are mega comfy!

Every pair of trousers I've looked at from various places seems to have that stitched seam down the front!

Breton top and jeans?
Oh, wait a minute, that's what I wore at 18. I need to acquire a more grownup wardrobe.

I’ve just made myself a shocking-pink corduroy pinafore. DH said it was “pinker than he expected”, not pinker than I did!
Being invisible is great! We can wear what we want.

My grandma's wore those wrapped around pinafores like a uniform everyday. My mum and mum in law wore them only when they prepared food.

We are all unique individuals whether grans nans or not. I don't like stereotypes I wear what I want.

I am old enough by now to know what suits me. I like comfortable and casual coordinated clothes if we go out I wear something smarter.

My grandmother wore a wrap around pinny ( though she lived with tow daughters who did all the work ) metal curlers in her hair and usually to cap it all a hairnet.

Interesting article, thank you.

I try to set an example for my Gchn in that my clothes are practical and made from natural fibres.
GS was looking at photos a while ago and I was wearing the same dress as was in one of them. He was astonished that the dress was older than him - and then more so when I said I'd bought it in a charity shop, He did defend himself by pointing out that he would look a bit silly in his baby clothes!

Never Ever Beige

Forsythia Tue 18-Oct-22 20:09:18

Me too. I found that when I retired I got rid of loads of clothes that I just would never wear again. Now, I dress for comfort but with a nod to looking fashionable if I can. Comfort is key though.

M0nica Tue 18-Oct-22 20:04:36

Whatever I do, I am myself. I have never defined myself by any of the roles this Blogger mentions. Come to that I wear the clothes I like and feel comfortable in.

Looking round at older women in the street and elsewhere, our styles of dress are far more variable than any younger group.

MissAdventure Tue 18-Oct-22 20:03:35

I should have a look, but I'm worn out.

Forsythia Tue 18-Oct-22 19:58:08

I tried to post a photo but no good at it.
